Subject
Troubleshoot the engine not reach rated power when loaded.
Failure/Problem

When loaded over 300Amp, engine with exhaust black smoke and shutdown.

Symptom
Engine hard to start. Every time engine start, need to operate the plunger on the lift pump (hand pump).
When loaded up to 200Amp engine was stable but 300Amp over exhaust black smoke and engine
shutdown.

History

Before this problem, output overhead cable line wires are short circuit and gen-set circuit breaker not trip,
engine was black smoke and shutdown.

Cause & analysis

Radiator and charge air cooler were very dirty and clogged, engine was overheat, so injector seal and
injector sleeve seal damage then coolant and fuel leakage. Thus, fuel pressure from injector was dropped
and injector malfunction and engine hard to start, therefore not enough power.

Action

Remove valve cover and, rocker arm shaft and all injectors. No.3 and No.5 injector were corrosion. So,
change all injector seal, No.3& No.5 injector sleeve and No.5 injector. After assembling all parts, adjusting
valve lash and injector timing, engine was easy to start and loaded over 300Amp.
