1. 150 MMscf/d of natural gas leaves an off-shore platform at 120°F and 1000
psia.
• The gas comes onshore at 45°F and 700 psia.
• The hydrate temperature of the gas is 65°F.
• Associated condensate production is 20 Bbl/MMscf.

The condensate has an API gravity of 48 and a MW of 145. Calculate the amount of
methanol and 70 wt% EG inhibitors required to prevent hydrate formation in the pipeline.

Solution:

1) Calculate the amount of water condensed per day

𝑊𝑖𝑛 = 100 𝑙𝑏/𝑀𝑀𝑠𝑐𝑓

𝑊𝑜𝑢𝑡 = 14 𝑙𝑏/𝑀𝑀𝑠𝑐𝑓

∆𝑊 = 86 𝑙𝑏/𝑀𝑀𝑠𝑐𝑓

𝑊𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑛𝑠𝑒𝑑 = (150) (100 − 14) = 12900 𝑙𝑏/𝑑𝑎𝑦

2) Calculate required methanol inhibitor concentration The minimum inhibitor

concentration in the free water phase may be approximated by
Hammerschmidt’s equation (1934).
d ∗ MW
𝑋= ∗ 100
K + (d ∗ MW)
dT = 65 – 45 = 20°F
X = (20*32) / ((2335) + (20*32))

X = 0,21
Should not be used beyond 20-25 wt% for methanol and 60-70 wt% for the
glycols.

3) Calculate mass rate of inhibitor in water phase For methanol con-centrations up to

about 50%, the Nielsen-Bucklin provides better accuracy

X ∗ mH2O 0.23 ∗ 12900
𝑚1 = = = 3853.25 Lb/day
𝑋𝐿 − 𝑋 1 − 𝑂. 23

4) Estimate vaporization losses

1,2

Daily loses=

(1,2)*(150)*(23) = 4140 lb/day

Ratio of methanol vapor composition to methanol liquid composition.
5) Estimate losses to hidrocarbon liquid phase

0,22

45°F and 23 wt% MeOH, xMeOH ≈ 0.22 mol%

6) Estimate losses to hidrocarbon liquid phase Lb/Mols of condensate per day:

𝐿𝑏 𝑚𝑒𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑜𝑙 = (12.43) (32) = 397.76 𝑙𝑏/𝑑𝑎𝑦

X = 0,36
Methanol left in the gas phase can be recovered by condensation with the remaining
water in downstream chilling processes. Likewise, the methanol in the condensate
phase can be recovered by water by downstream water washing. 80 wt% EG
