Online Faculty Development Programme in Pedagogy and Research Methods (2020)

A brief description of the content (document date: 22/May/2020)

The curriculum will be a careful blend of sessions that cover a range of topics including Case Method of
Teaching, Classroom Effectiveness, Quantitative and Qualitative Research Methods, Essentials of Crafting &
Publishing Research, Statistical Methods and Modelling Techniques. These topics will be organized under a
few courses and here we provide a description for each of them.

1. Communication for Management Teachers and Case Method in Management Education

(16 sessions)

Communication for Management Teachers will introduce you to the personal academic foundations
that contribute to your credibility as a communicator, and examine a few instructional strategies used
in participant-centred learning approaches, including the Case Method of learning.

2. Crafting and Publication of Research

(8 sessions)

Scholarly writing is a highly essential skill to thrive in academia. It is a powerful mode of communicating
ideas to a wide audience. Despite its importance, many do not have access to structured training in
order to strengthen one’s writing skills. The ability to communicate research clearly is fundamental to
academic success. The purpose of this course is to support participants to write for an academic
audience (grant proposals, manuscripts, conference papers, etc.). Participants will learn to write
within an academic genre, synthesize diverse literature within their chosen discipline, use constructive
feedback to improve their writing, and present scholarship to their peers. The course will combine
lectures, class discussions, and participant-driven writing projects.

3. Principles of Psychometrics and Scale Construction

(10 sessions)

The purpose of this course is to introduce to the participants the central concepts of psychological
measurement. The course takes a “nuts and bolts” approach, covering the critical aspects of
psychometric theory including test construction, item analysis, reliability, validity, and factor analysis.
The course will aim to provide a foundation for designing and using robust measurements to perform
empirical research in business areas. The course will be structured around a framework of
measurement principles and will be based on a combination of theoretical and practice-oriented
sessions that will provide working knowledge of concepts using statistical software like SPSS and
AMOS.

4. Qualitative Research Methods

(6 sessions)

This module will expose participants to select, widely adopted qualitative methods within the
discipline of organization studies. Beyond short lectures and discussions, the module will be centred
around a method related project that the participants will carry out in groups.

5. Statistical Data Analysis
(10 sessions)

We live in a data rich world where large amounts of information are being generated on a mass scale
in virtually every domain like Business, Economics, Medicine, Finance, Human Resources and the like.
With such large amount of readily available data, understanding and analyzing it becomes all the more
challenging and important. The tools of Statistical Modelling and Inference enables us to do just
that. This course will explore the principal concepts and techniques of statistical modeling with an
applied orientation. Topics those will be covered are Sampling techniques, Confidence Intervals,
Hypotheses Testing, ANOVA and Linear Regression Analysis. Learning of concepts will be given as much
importance as the applications of those in real life decision making. Data analysis and computation
will be implemented using the statistical software “R” and hence this course will also enable the
participants to gain some comfort in using this well-known software.

Each session will be for a duration of 1 hour and 15 minutes. There will be two sessions per day, at
6:00 pm to 7:15 pm and 7:30 pm to 8:45 pm. Sessions will be scheduled on any 5 days of the week,
excluding Sunday.

Kindly note that the descriptions are meant to provide an idea of the topics to be covered. Individual
faculty members may make some alterations to the content, as may be appropriate.
