Dynamics Tutorial #2 (for discussion in course web forum during week of April 6 -10.)
(Students are requested to try to work these problems. If there are any difficulties or if there
are some areas where further clarifications are needed they are invited to bring them to the
teacher’s attention by posting an entry in the discussion forum in the course web or by
sending an e-mail to nihal.s@sliit.lk)

(1) Tests reveal that a normal driver takes about 0.75 s before he or she can react to a
situation to avoid a collision. It takes about 3 s for a driver having 0.1% alcohol in his
system to do the same. If such drivers are travelling on a straight road at 50 km/h and
their cars can decelerate at 0.6 m/s2, determine the shortest stopping distance, d , for each
from the moment they see the pedestrians. (Moral: Don’t drink and drive!)
(Prob. 12-13 of Hibbeler, “Statics & Dynamics”, ed. 14; modified)

v = 50 km/h

(2) The position of a particle along a straight line path is defined by

𝑠 = 𝑡 3 − 6𝑡 2 − 15𝑡 + 7 ; where s is in m and t is in s.
(a) Determine the total distance travelled during the time interval from t= 0 s to t= 10 s.
(b) Over the above time interval what are the particle’s average velocity and the average
speed?
(c) What are the instantaneous velocity and instantaneous acceleration of the particle at
t=10 s?
(Prob. 12-14 of Hibbeler)

(3) The acceleration, a, of a rocket travelling upward is given by

𝑚
𝑎 = (6 + 0.02𝑠) where 𝑎 is in 𝑠𝑒𝑐 2 and the displacement 𝑠 is in 𝑚.

At t = 0, v = 0 and s = 0.
Determine the time needed for the rocket to reach an altitude of s = 100 m.
(Prob. 12-18 of Hibbeler)
(4)

A particle is travelling along the parabolic path 𝑦 = 0.25 𝑥 2 . At t = 2 s, the other

parameters are: x = 8 m, vx = 8 m/s, and ax = 4 m/s2. Determine the magnitude of the
particle’s velocity and acceleration at t = 2 s.
(Prob. F12-19 of Hibbeler)

(5) Determine the speed at

which the basketball at A must
be thrown at the angle of 30⁰ for
it to fall into the basket at B.
(Prob. F12-23 of Hibbeler).

(6) Water is sprayed at an angle of 90⁰

from the slope at 20 m/s. Determine the
range R.
(Prob. F12-24 of Hibbeler).

(7) The velocity of a particle is 𝒗 = 3 𝒊 + (6 − 2𝑡) 𝒋 𝑚/𝑠 where t is in s. If the position

vector r = 0 when t = 0, determine the displacement of the particle during the time interval
t = 1 s to t = 3 s.
(Prob. 12-70 of Hibbeler).
(8) Determine the minimum initial
velocity v0 and the corresponding
angle θ0 at which the ball must be
kicked in order for it to just cross over
the 3-m high fence.
(Prob. 12-86 of Hibbeler).

(9) A ball machine, positioned at the

base of a slope, shoots a ball with a
velocity of 10 m/s, inclined at 60⁰ to the
horizontal direction as shown in the
figure. The slope is represented by the 10 m/s
parabolic curve y = 0.05 x2, where x and
y are expressed in m. The dimensions of
the ball machine may be neglected.
Determine the point B (x,y) where the
ball will strike the slope.
(Prob. 12-73 of Hibbeler; modified)
