Opening Prayer

Dear God, into your loving hands we


commit this day ourselves, our desires,
our goals. Be with us in our daily
routine and make us realize how
science is part of our daily activity. This
is our prayer, in Jesus name Amen.

Introduction:

In this lesson you will learn and discover more about science and its
relationship to technology, the effects of Science and technology to
society, the comforts brought about by modern appliances as well as the
disadvantages they create.

Pre-Assessment:
a. How is science related to technology?

Objectives:
 Relate Science to daily activities
 Enumerate applications of science in the form of technology.

Lecture Notes/ Lesson:


Let’s start our lesson with a recall of the concepts learned about the nature
of science.

Today we will relate science to our daily activities.

By the way, what did you do from the time you woke up to the time
you entered your classroom?

a. For example your alarm clock – wakes you up early so you won’t get
late.
b. Upon taking a bath – you used soap and water as chemical
compounds.
c. On your breakfast – you ate food like rice, sufficient in
carbohydrates, eggs as source of proteins, fruits that give you
vitamins and minerals.
d. Upon getting to school, various means of transportation use energy
to make them more or put them in motion.

Let’s have a short activity


Activity 1:
On your activity sheet give your own version of science in your daily
routine or activities.
Now, I would like you to look at the illustration of advances in
technology that make life more convenient to you.
Today you are surrounded by modern appliances such as: television, cell
phones, iPods, computers, refrigerators, electric light, internet, airplanes,
cameras, etc.
The internet connects you to the world as never before by making
communication faster and easier.
Science enables you not only to know how to use technological advances but
also to understand how and why they work.
Besides the comforts and advantages brought about by science and
technology, we will consider also the disadvantages or bad consequences it
gives us.
A. The Internet
Advantages – instant communication; help in doing research
work by giving instant information through websites and
search engines such as Google.
Disadvantages –easy access to pornographic materials, visual
violence and other harmful materials; danger of contact with
strangers through unsupervised e-mail and other websites.
B. A Cell phone
Advantages –Instant communication from anywhere; instant
communication through text messaging.
Disadvantages – Danger of contact with pranksters and
strangers through unsupervised text messages, lack of privacy.
C. Television
Advantages –entertainment and information from
educational channel; instant information on breaking news
and current events.
Disadvantages – distraction from school studies, homework
and assignments; distortion of values through commercialism
in advertisements; bad influence of violence and immorality.
D. Airplanes
Advantages – fast and easy travel to any point on earth; fast
transport of goods.
Disadvantages – noise and pollution; weapons for war and
destruction.
E. Cameras
Advantages – instant editing, instant pictures and
communication; more choices of pictures.
Disadvantages – can be used for production of pornographic
and violent picture; used in spying and scamming and
inversion of identity.

DISCUSSION AND PROCESSING

1. Why do you think you are given the lesson on both advantages and
disadvantages of the inventions in science and technology? Give your
opinion.
2. How will you use your time wisely on:
a. Selection of TV programs? Give your idea.
b. Selection of DVD movies?
c. Use of internet and mobile phones?

Summary/Generalization:

 Technology is the application of science to everyday life. It refers to


methods, systems, and devices which are result of scientific knowledge.

Closing Prayer

Loving God, we are grateful for the study of science and the advances in
technology that gives comforts and convenience in our everyday activities
and in many aspects of our life. We turn to you for wisdom and guidance sa
that we make use of these inventions in the right way. All these we pray, in
Jesus name amen.
