In the summer of 2016, the Himalayan Club arranged an expedition to attempt the
rst ascent of Shahi Kangri (6934 m) into the eastern Karakoram mountain range. A
ve-member climbing squad, Rajesh Gadgil, Vineeta Muni, Ratnesh Zaveri, Dinesh
Korday, and Divyesh Muni, accompanied by a young town lad (Roshmin Mahendru)
eager for a new adventure, set out together for this unparalleled challenge.
Together they discover the path to Shahi Kangri, and when they found it would not
be feasible, they tried to climb the mighty Nya Kangri (6520 m). The lm “200
Meters” is a rare tale of adventure, love, sacri ce, perseverance, and con dence set
in the breathtaking scenery of the rugged and majestic eastern Karakoram
mountains.

This is the tale of the courage and resolve of the esteemed mountaineers of the Hima
layan Club against the backdrop of the rough East Karakorams.
The northwestern extension of the Himalayas, recognized as the Karakoram line, str
etches across boundaries between Pakistan, India, and China. They are the most pro
hibitive mountain chains in the country, with many peaks of more than
7000 meters.
The Karakorams have the biggest glaciers beyond the arctic ice, giving rise to some o
f the wildest rivers in the country. The topography is de ned by snowcapped peaks a
nd rugged terrain. Once a team of mountaineers from The Himalayan Club launched
their trek from the picturesque village of Rongdo in the southern end of the East
Karakoram Mountains, they did not realize where they would eventually land.
With a daring intention to traverse the mighty eastern Karakorams, the six-member
squad took o from Mumbai in July 2017. Seven
weeks later, the squad returned to Mumbai, having accomplished more than 100 km
of walking through virgin glaciers and mountains and reaching a height of 6165 m.
Three wide passes were crossed: Rongdo la (5800 m), Argan la (5950 m), and Zamor
iyon la (5860 m). It was the rst intersection of Argan La and the Zamoriyon La. The
mission had to face several obstacles, including disasters, erratic weather, and extre
me cold conditions.

Western Karakoram may not be on the list of the most popular winter destinations. I
n Western minds, this area always seems to have a derogatory face. Yet precisely this
appeal of the fresh and mysterious lets the hearts of the four Tyrolean alpinists pou
nd harder.
