COURSE OBJECTIVES
1 To impart knowledge on semiconductors and crystalline structures
2 To impart knowledge on Magnetic property and superconductivity
3 To impart knowledge on Charge carriers and charge transport
4 To impart knowledge on Working of PN junction diode
5 To impart knowledge on Optical fiber cables
COURSE OUTCOMES
Upon completion of the course, students shall have ability to

C0.1 Exemplify the types of bonding in solids and analyze the crystal structure
C0.2 Analyze the Magnetic properties of different magnets and learn the different theories of
superconductivity
C0.3 Illustrate the operation of semiconductors and analyze the charge transport mechanism
C0.4 Exemplify the working of PN junction diode and the various doping profiles
CO.5 Represent the working mechanism of Optical fibers
COURSE CONTENTS
UNIT –I SOLID STATE PHYSICS (9 Hrs)
Types of bonding in solids-Ionic Bonding, Covalent Bonding, Metallic Bonding, Hydrogen Bonding,
Molecular Bonding.
Simple crystal structures-Simple cubic structure, Body centered cubic structure, Face cantered cubic
structure, Hexagonal closed packed structure,
UNIT –II MAGNETIC PROPERTY AND SUPER CONDUCTIVITY ( 9Hrs)
Magnetic property: Permeability, Magnetization, origin of magnetic moment, classification of magnetic
materials, Dia, Para and Ferro magnetism, hysteresis curve, soft and hard magnetic materials.

Superconductivity: General properties, Messiner Effect, penetration depth, type I and type II super
conductors, flux quantization, DC and AC Josephs son effect, DCS theory, Applications of super
conductors.
UNIT -III SEMICONDUCTORSAND CHARGE TRANSPORT (9 Hrs)
Energy Bands in solids, splitting of energy levels into bands, metals semiconductors and insulators, direct
and indirect semiconductors, charge carriers, electrons and holes, intrinsic and extrinsic semiconductors.
Electron hole densities in equilibrium, excess carriers, non-equilibrium situation, Quasi Fermi levels,
concept of lifetime of carriers, Drift current, Hall effect, Diffusion current, current density equation,
continuity equation.
UNIT –IV P- N JUNCTION (9 Hrs)
P-N junction under thermal equilibrium built in potential, concept of space charge layer, distribution of
electric and potential within a space(abrupt and linearly graded junctions), P-N junction under applied bias,
Doping profiles.
UNIT -V APPLIED OPTICS (9 Hrs)
Optical fiber, Acceptance angle and numerical aperture, fabrication of fiber using double crucible method,
types of optical fibers, Losses in fiber, distortion and dispersion, Light sources for optics, detectors.

2 To apply the basic laws on D.C Circuits and calculate the voltages and current

5 To enable students to obtain knowledge in different type of wiring

UNIT -1 ELEMENTARY CONCEPTS (12
Hrs)
Concept of Potential difference. Current and resistance. Ohm’s law, effect of temperature on resistance,
resistance temperature coefficient, insulation resistance. SI units of work Power and Energy. Conversion of
energy from one form to another in electrical and thermal systems.
UNIT -I1 D. C. CIRCUITS (12
Hrs)
Ideal current source and Ideal Voltage generator. Internal resistance-Source Transformation, series and
parallel Connected sources - resistors in series and parallel - voltage and current division - Nodal analysis -
mesh analysis- super mesh and super node analysis, Star-Delta conversion
UNIT -1II A.C. FUNDAMENTALS (12
Hrs)
Sinusoidal voltage and currents, their mathematical and graphical representation, concept of cycle period,
frequency, instantaneous, peak, average, r.m.s. values, peak factor , form factor, phase difference, lagging,
leading and in phase quantities and phasor representation. Rectangular and polar representation of phasors.
Study of A.C circuits of pure resistance, inductance and capacitance and corresponding voltage- current
phasor diagrams, voltage – current and power waveforms.

Study of series and parallel R-L, R-C, R-L-C circuits, concept of impedance and admittance for different
combinations, series and parallel connected inductor , capacitor, Mesh and nodal analysis of A.C. Circuits

Safety measures in electrical system-types of wiring-wiring accessories-staircase, fluorescent lamps &
corridor wiring. Basic principles of earthing-types of earthing-simple layout of generation, transmission and
distribution of power

COURSE OBJECTIVES

1 To get an understanding of electronic component and electronic equipment


2 To apply basic laws for analyzing circuits
3 To practice soldering of electronic components
4 To practice basic electrical wiring
5 To understand simulation of electric circuits in Multisim
COURSE OUTCOMES
Upon completion of the course, students shall have ability to

CO 1 Identify electronic components and utilize electronic equipments


CO 2 Analyze electric circuits using basic laws
CO 3 Measure voltage, current and power in RL,RC and RLC circuits
CO 4 Perform basic electrical wiring
CO 5 Verify circuit characteristics using Multisim
COURSE CONTENTS

1. Study of passive and active components and equipments – Resistor, colour coding , capacitors,
function generator, D.C. power supply etc
2. Study of CRO and measurement of AC signal parameter (peak-peak, rms period, frequency) using
CRO
3. Construction of series and parallel circuit using resistors
4. Verification of current division and voltages division laws
5. Verification of mesh and nodal analysis
6. Measurement of electrical quantities such as voltage, current and power in RLC circuits
7. Preparation of PCB layout and simulation of PCB(Printed circuit Board)
8. Soldering practice – Components Devices and Circuits – Using general purpose PCB
9. Residential wiring(Using Energy meter, fuses, switches, indicator, lamps etc)
10. Different type of wiring like florescent lamp, stair case and godown wiring
11. Study of earthing and measurement of earth resistance
