Description 2 Overview

2 Overview

The 14.4kbit/s Circuit Switched Data feature enables the Huawei GSM base station subsystem
(GBSS) to transmit circuit switched (CS) services only on full-rate traffic channels (TCHFs).
This feature supports the following transmission rates over the Um interface:
l 14.4 kbit/s for transparent services
l 14.5 kbit/s for non-transparent services
To support single-timeslot transparent and non-transparent data services,
set DATATRAFFSETto T14_4K and NT14_5K on the local maintenance terminal (LMT),
respectively.
14.4 kbit/s transparent and 14.5 kbit/s non-transparent data services are more reliable than
general packet radio service (GPRS) and Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution (EDGE)
services, and provide higher data transmission rates than basic circuit switched data (CSD)
services. This helps operators enrich their services and increase their revenues.

NOTE

Basic CSD services refer to single-timeslot CSD services at a rate less than or equal to 9.6 kbit/
s over the Um interface. For details about basic CSD services, see the Radio Bearer Services
Feature Parameter Description.
For 14.4 kbit/s transparent and 14.5 kbit/s non-transparent data services, the call setup, channel
allocation, handover, and channel preemption are performed in the same way as those for CS
services. However, the base station controller (BSC) does not actively decrease the TCHF coding
rate during a handover.
During 14.4 kbit/s transparent and 14.5 kbit/s non-transparent data services, the BSC allocates
TCHFs at specific rates to mobile stations (MSs) as instructed by the mobile switching center
(MSC).

Description 3 Transmission Redundancy

3 Transmission Redundancy

Data packets may be lost in A over IP mode. If the packet loss rate is high, the performance of
CSD services deteriorates.

To improve CSD service reliability in A over IP mode, Huawei GBSS provides transmission
redundancy for CSD services.

With transmission redundancy, each data block is transmitted multiple times, and each Real-
Time Transport Protocol (RTP) packet contains several data blocks.

The redundancy levels are determined by the setting of AIPCSDSRVRDNDLEV:

l NO(Not Supported): Transmission redundancy is not supported.

l R2(Only R2 Supported): Level-2 transmission redundancy is enabled, as shown in Figure
3-1.
l R3(Only R3 Supported): Level-3 transmission redundancy is enabled, as shown in Figure
3-2.

Description 3 Transmission Redundancy

Figure 3-2 Level-3 transmission redundancy

If a data block in an RTP packet is discarded during transmission, a data block with the same
payload will be transmitted in the next RTP packet. This ensures that the CSD payload remains
intact after transmission. CSD services are affected only when the current redundancy level is
inadequate for processing the consecutive packet loss.
Transmission redundancy has the following restrictions:
l Transmission redundancy takes effect on the uplink and downlink simultaneously at the
same redundancy level.
l Ongoing CSD calls no longer use the User Datagram Protocol (UDP) multiplexing function
after transmission redundancy takes effect.
l Transmission redundancy is not supported in Abis over IP mode.

Description 4 Engineering Guidelines

4 Engineering Guidelines

4.1 Impact
l A over TDM mode
14.4 kbit/s transparent and 14.5 kbit/s non-transparent data services have the same
requirements for channel preemption and transmission bandwidth as CS services.
Therefore, deploying the 14.4kbit/s Circuit Switched Data feature has no impact on the
network.
l A over IP mode
As defined in the A-interface RTP protocol in the 3GPP specifications, CS calls use the
compressed coding scheme and occupy low bandwidth. However, 14.4 kbit/s transparent
and 14.5 kbit/s non-transparent data services use the non-compressed coding scheme. In
this situation, the payload rate of a single call is 64 kbit/s, and the payload rate reaches a
maximum of 192 kbit/s (64 kbit/s x 3 if transmission redundancy is used for CSD services.
This requires large bandwidth. Therefore, you must increase the transmission bandwidth
over the A interface.
