Do Now/Hook:
● I will need three teachers dressed up in three different outfits for
this. One in just a generic gaudy popstar-like outfit and a wig to
represent the pop generic. The other in a cowboy hat and then the
other in an all-black outfit and guitar to represent rock and roll
● The lesson will start off as an award show. I will be the host. 15 min
● “Welcome to the 1st Annual SB award show. Today we’re going to
be presenting awards to the best musicians. Our first award goes to
*insert popstar name here*.
● The “popstar” (the first teacher) comes out and lipsyncs the chorus
of a pop song.
● The second singer/teacher, the country singer comes out and
lipsyncs to a country song.
● The third teacher does the same and sings a rock and roll song
● After all the singers/teachers are done, I will say “Wow, thank you
for coming.” The teachers will leave and then I will ask the kids
what they thought about the songs.
● What were the differences?

Direct Instruction/Modeling:
● The songs were different because they were from different genres.
● A genre is a style of music. There are so many genres and those
were just a few.
● I will then show a presentation of 5 popular genres. Rap, Country, 10 min
Pop, Rock, and Jazz.
● I will give examples of performers from each genre, the history of
the genre, the sounds and instruments that are typically associated
with that genre and where it comes from, etc

Student Practice/Application:
● We will play a game of Guess that Genre!
● I will play ten seconds of a song and students have to name its
genre
● I will play about ten songs.
● The plan is to arrange the songs so that each round gets harder and
the lines between genres get more blurred. For instance, Old town
road will be one of the songs. It blends elements of country rap.
● This will teach the students that modern music doesn’t always 15 min

neatly fit into a clear-cut genre and that sometimes songs are
mixtures of multiple genres.

● We have learned that songs can come in many genres.
● Sometimes they are combinations of genres
