Reading Comprehension

“Crucita”

Crucita Valdez lived in a small village called San Eliso. The village was near a river
name the Rio Grande. Crucita had two sisters. They were name Isabella and Rosita.
They were very beautiful.

Crucita, however, was not beautiful. She had large black eyes. But they were always
half-closed. She also walked in a very strange way.

One day Crucita was sitting on the steps of her house. She was five years old.
Crucita’s grandfather, Filiberto, looked at her. He said softly to himself, “ah, Crucita.
It is too bad you don’t look like your sisters.”

Crucita could her very well. She said, “What do I look lied, grandpa?” Filiberto was
surprised. He did not think Crucita could hear his words. He told Crucita, “You are
kind to me. You are kind to everyone. You help your parents. You always do good
things. You are a wonderful child, Crucita.”

There was a church in the middle of the village. The church was the biggest building
in the village. People prayed in the church. It was the meeting place for the villagers.
Every so often there were parties in the church. The church was very important to the
people of San Eliso.

The church was very old. When it rained, the roof leaked. Cold winds blew through
the walls. The people of San Eliso wanted a new church. But the villagers were poor.
They did not have much money. They could afford to build a new church.

One day Sister Mary Olivia was in the church. Crucita was with her. They were
looking at a book. Sister Mary Olivia was showing Crucita some words in the book.
Crucita said, “Sister Mary, I cannot see the words. The words are very small. They
are too small for me to see.”

Then Sister Mary realized that Crucita could hardly see. She was almost blind. That
is why her eyes were always half-closed. That is why she walks in a strange way.
