READ THE FOLLOWING DIRECTIONS CAREFULLY

1. Answer ANY three questions.

marks will be awarded for correct steps in calculations.

1. A. Distinguish between distance and displacement.
(2 marks)

B. i. Define the terms ‘speed’ and ‘acceleration’. If a car accelerates


uniformly at 2.5m/s 2 and starts from a velocity of 36 Km/hour,
find its velocity after 8 seconds.

ii. A runner in a race accelerates uniformly from rest, then travels


at a constant speed and only slows down near the end of the
race. Sketch the speed/time graph for this motion. What is
meant by the AVERAGE SPEED of the runner?

C. In 1991, Carl Lewis ran the 100m race in 9.87s.the time taken to cover
each 10m section is shown in the table below.

He accelerated for the first 40m and ran at an approximately constant


speed for the next 40m.

i. Find the value of his speed in the section 40-50, and use this
value to find the acceleration over the first 40m.

ii. If Lewis had a mass of 83Kg, find the average force that he
exerted while accelerating.
(3 marks)

iii. What was his average speed for the complete race?
(2 marks)

D. A boy is playing outside in the school yard with his friends ,he tosses a
ball in the sky vertically with a velocity of 25m/s. At what time would
the ball attain its maximum height?

2. A. State the principle of conservation of energy.

B. Distinguish between kinetic energy and gravitational potential energy.

C. At a football match between two college teams, the referee ordered a free
Kick. The ball of mass 1.5kg was placed at rest. The kick was about to be
taken by an eager footballer. What was the potential energy of the ball just
before the kick was taken?

D. The footballer kicked the ball and it was caught by the opposing
goalkeeper, 4 meters above the ground. The ball was traveling at 10m/s.

i. Calculate the potential energy of the ball just before it was


caught.
(2 marks)
ii. Calculate the kinetic energy of the ball just before it was
caught.
(2 marks)
iii. After the ball was caught what was the kinetic energy
converted into.
(2 marks)

E. Given a labeled diagram of a bicycle on a level ground, you are required to


write the two equations that satisfy the condition of equilibrium.
(4marks)

F. Kenny and Candy decided to sit on a see-saw while visiting a local play
park. Candy of mass 50kg, sat 250cm from the pivot of the seesaw.

i. Where should Kenny of 60kg mass sit so that a state of stable


equilibrium exist?

ii. What should Kenny do if he wants to elevate Candy?

3. A. Distinguish between each of the following pairs of terms.

i. Heat capacity and specific heat capacity.


State an equation relating the two quantities. State clearly any
parameters used in your equation.

ii. Evaporation and boiling

B. When a volatile liquid evaporates, the remaining liquid cools. Explain the
cooling in terms of the particulate theory of matter.
(4 marks)
C. Calculate the quantity of heat required to melt 10kg of Ice. And then raise the
temperature of the water formed to 300C.(Lice= 336 000 J/kg and
cwater= 4200 JKg-1K-1) (5 marks)

D. Describe and experiment to determine the specific heat capacity of substance


by electrical method.

development?

B. Tell the difference between nuclear fission and fusion.

C. Define mass deficit.

D. The sun produces energy as a result of the following fusion reaction:

411H →24 He +2 10 e
Calculate:
i. the mass deficit in Kg and u
ii. the energy released in J and MeV.

Mass of 24 He = 4.00387 u
Mass of 10 e = negligible

E. A radio isotope of Xe decays during a beta (β) decay according to the equation:

What is the value of M and N?
