Similarities and Differences

Description:
Student Information:
Previous Knowledge:
• Students have spent the last couple classes building an understanding of the story of the 3
Pigs, and then also looking at the story of the 3 wolves. Students worked on creating a
story map of The Three Little Wolves yesterday and are familiar with that story.
• Students have also seen Venn diagrams before and should be familiar with them;
however, I can’t assume they will remember, so we will discuss this during the lesson.
Summary Overview:
• During this lesson, we will review what we know about the traditional story of the 3 pigs.
Students will then move into a brief review of what a Venn diagram is, and how/why we
use them- this will be mostly student led as I am looking for them to tell me the answers.
Students will be prompted with questions to discover their own understanding.
• We will talk about what compare/contrast means, and then practice using a Venn diagram
as a group. We will compare/ contrast the Sun and the moon.
• Students will then work with a partner to create a Venn diagram to compare/contrast the
two stories we have been reading. Students will use prompting sentences and then
determine which are the same and which are different.
• We will finish class by asking students to consider the similarities and differences, while
thinking about which version is their favourite and why. This will set them up for our
next lesson.

Objectives:
Curriculum Objectives:
General Outcomes: Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to…
o GLO 1: Explore thoughts, ideas, feelings and experiences.
o GLO 3: Manage ideas and information.
o GLO 5: Respect, support and collaborate with others.

Specific Outcomes:
o 1.2.2- Combine ideas: record ideas and information in ways that makes sense.
o 3.1.1- Focus attention: relate personal knowledge to ideas and information in oral,
print and other media texts.
o 5.1.3- Relate texts to culture: discuss similarities and differences in settings,
character and events in oral, print and other media texts

Lesson Objectives: At the end of the lesson, a student will be able to…
1) Identify the purpose of a Venn diagram and show understanding of compare/contrast.
2) Use previous knowledge of 2 familiar texts to complete a Venn diagram, which will
highlight similarities and differences between the 2 texts.
Inclusion:
Whole Class LEARNING STYLES
Groups Visual
Pairs Auditory
Individuals Kinesthetic

Adaptations:
• No specific adaptations. If necessary, a group may require a bit of extra support to
complete the activity- I will give extra guidance where necessary.
• If a group is struggling to write, I will have slides with sentences for compare/contrast of
3 wolves and 3 pigs (eg. 3 good characters, 1 bad character, Big Bad Pig, Big Bad Wolf,
Straw house, Brick house, etc.) I will get them to just record the sentence # in the Venn
diagram, and the sentences could be transcribed for them later (this is only if a group is
struggling significantly).

Materials/Resources:
• Anchor chart pages with Venn diagram (half pages)
• The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig
• Three Little Pigs (by Disney- just to show cover)

Instructions/Procedures:

Introduction Time
• Have students sit in the open area.
• Begin the class by asking what students remember about the traditional
version of The Three Little Pigs that we read last week. Mark down key
words on the white board. Show the video to spark their memory.
8 min
• Remind students that we read this story last week, and today we are
going to work on doing what is called a compare and contrast between
this traditional version, and the version we read yesterday about the
Three wolves.
Body Time
What is compare • Ask students: Does anyone have an idea about what
and contrast? compare means?
• Does anyone have an idea about what contrast
means? 12 min

• Have students give some ideas and respond to their

answers in a way that will help them discover the
actual meanings. If a student knows the answer, ask
how they know?
• After a couple minutes of discussion, ensure that
students understand that:
o When we say compare, we identify what is
the same.
o When we say contrast, we identify what is
different.
• You could write these on the board for students to
reference.
• Show students an empty Venn diagram. Prompt
them to begin thinking. Ask:
o Does anyone know what this is? Have you
seen this before?
o What do we use it for?
o How do we use it?
• Tell students we will practice using this together,
before we use it for the stories… Ask students to
think about things that are similar and different
between: The Moon and the Sun
o Have students do a snowball discussion.
o 30 seconds with a partner, 30 seconds with 4
people, 30 seconds with 8 people, etc. Until
the whole class is talking. Each time groups
join together; they will share ideas.
• Come back together as a large class group and talk
about what is the same and what is different between
the moon and sun. Record students’ ideas in the
appropriate spaces- MODEL the use of the chart.
• Transition: Move students to their desks- walk like
you have marshmallows under your feet!
3 Pigs vs. • Students will work in partners for this activity.
3 Wolves Partners will be at their table groups.
• Each pair will get a half piece of chart paper, with a
Venn diagram drawn on each. The circles will be
20 min
labelled for each story.
• Give students plenty of time to brainstorm with a
partner, assist where necessary.

Conclusion Time
• Have students move from the desk area to the open area and sit together.
• Ask students: After looking at what was the same, and what was different
about the 2 stories, which one is your favourite? Why? 5 min
• This will prime students for the next lesson when we will talk about
preference.
Assessment:
• I can combine ideas: record ideas and information in ways that makes sense.
• I can focus attention: relate personal knowledge to ideas and information in oral, print
and other media texts.
• I can relate texts to culture: discuss similarities and differences in settings, character
and events in oral, print and other media texts from various communities.

• I will take in the Venn diagrams at the end of class, and review what students recorded
for their answers. I will use this to help me gauge student understanding of how the Venn
diagram works, as well as what a similarity and difference is.

Teacher Notes:

• While students are doing their own Venn diagram, be sure to wander around the room
while they are writing. Don’t stay glued to one spot- there is no reason for you to stay at
the front of the room. You can switch slides on your computer from the back or side of
the room. Ensure you can see all students while doing this.
• Have the Venn diagram papers premade and ready to go.

Reflection: How did the lesson go? Is there anything you would do differently next time? What
worked well/ not so well?
