Similarities and Differences- Continued

Description:
Student Information:
Previous Knowledge:
• Students have spent the last couple classes building an understanding of the story of the 3
Pigs, and then also looking at the story of the 3 wolves. Students created a story map of
The Three Little Wolves and have done the same for the traditional story.
• Yesterday, students completed a Venn diagram that compared the story of the Three
Little Pigs and the Three Little Wolves.
Summary Overview:
• During this lesson, we will revisit the Venn diagrams we created yesterday with partners.
This will be very brief, so students can refresh their memory of what we wrote yesterday
and have a few more minutes to add last minute ideas. Students can share ideas with the
class.
• We will then read a new version of the 3 pigs: Three Ninja Pigs. This will introduce
students to a new story and allow them to have a brief discussion about the similarities
and differences between this novel book, and the ones we are familiar with.

Objectives:
Curriculum Objectives:
General Outcomes: Students will listen, speak, read, write, view and represent to…
o GLO 1: Explore thoughts, ideas, feelings and experiences.
o GLO 3: Manage ideas and information.

Specific Outcomes:
o 1.2.2- Combine ideas: record ideas and information in ways that makes sense.
o 3.1.1- Focus attention: relate personal knowledge to ideas and information in oral,
print and other media texts.

Lesson Objectives: At the end of the lesson, a student will be able to…
1) Share ideas with the class from a completed Venn diagram, comparing Three Little Pigs
and Three Little Wolves.
2) Generate ideas in a class discussion to compare the new story, Ninja Pigs, to familiar
versions that we have looked at previously.
Inclusion:
Whole Class LEARNING STYLES
Groups Visual
Pairs Auditory
Individuals Kinesthetic

Adaptations:
• No specific adaptations. This class is to revisit the work we did yesterday, and then read a
new story. I will be sure to check in with the groups while they are finishing their Venn
diagram.

Materials/Resources:
• Anchor chart pages with Venn diagram (half pages)
• The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig
• Three Little Pigs (by Disney- just to show cover)
• Three Ninja Pigs by Corey Rosen Schwartz

Instructions/Procedures:

Introduction Time
• Have students sit in their desks- we will begin the class by reminding
students of what we did yesterday.
• Let students know that we will spend a couple minutes finishing the
work from yesterday, because a few were still writing when we had to
3 min
leave! Have students sit with their partners and hand back the Venn
diagrams.
• Let students know you have the books if they want to look at them.

Body Time
Venn Diagram • After handing back the Venn diagrams, spend some
time having a mini conference with each grouping
of students. 10 min
• Spend a couple minutes talking with any students Or less
who were not there the day before, to catch them up depending
and assess their understanding through conversation. on
Have students join into a group to get more ideas. students’
engagement
• If time permits give groups, the opportunity to share
something interesting they found!
THREE NINJA • Have students gather in the open area, they can
15 min
PIGS! leave the papers at their desk (gather them after)
• Let them know, that we are going to read a brand-
new story today. Don’t tell them about it, just show
the cover and begin reading. Let them be surprised!
• Tell students to watch for things that are similar or
different to the 3 wolves or the traditional 3 pigs!

• After reading, ask students what they notice about

this book… is there anything similar or different?

• Create a 3-circle Venn diagram together as a class.

Conclusion Time
• Thank students for their hard work, let them know you will look over
their Venn diagrams this weekend!
• Next week we will start a challenge to build a strong house for a pig- tell 2 min
students they can begin thinking about the best materials to build a
house!

Assessment:
• I can combine ideas: record ideas and information in ways that makes sense.
• I can focus attention: relate personal knowledge to ideas and information in oral, print
and other media texts.

• I will take in the Venn diagrams at the end of class, and review what students recorded
for their answers. I will use this to help me gauge student understanding of how the Venn
diagram works, as well as what a similarity and difference is. I will also gauge student
understanding of comparison through class discussion of the new story.

Teacher Notes:

• While students are doing their own Venn diagram, be sure to wander around the room
while they are writing.
• Have the Venn diagram papers premade and ready to go.
• Bring 3 wolves and 3 pigs so students can look at the books and refresh their memory

Reflection: How did the lesson go? Is there anything you would do differently next time? What
worked well/ not so well?
