I hope you had an enjoyable half term. This term seems to be passing very quickly,
with lots of activities in school.
The Year 11 have returned from Half Term ready to take external examinations and
Mock Exams. 155 took GCSE English this month and 133 took GCSE Maths. We await
the results on January 11th 2011.
We have had much sporting success this term and are very appreciative of the new
football kit that Mr Ogden has sponsored – the boys look fantastic and are ably
managed by Mrs Metcalfe.
There will be a December newsletter, however, here is advance warning that the term
will end at 2.00pm on Friday 17th December and will begin again for pupils on
Thursday 6th January 2011. We also have a published Staff Training Day on
Monday 29th November.
In the last newsletter, I made reference to the ‘Behaviour Audit’ that had just been
carried out by Cheshire East, at our school. The report is now in and we were
officially graded as ‘Good’, against OFSTED criteria. Very well done to all pupils
and staff. k

RESULTS OF THE UNIFORM CONSULTATION
Would you like the same uniform for Key Stage 3 and 4?
571 said ‘YES’ and 174 said ‘NO’
The school therefore will adapt the uniform for all years, in a small way, to
avoid a costly replacement of uniform between years 9 and 10.
Of Year 6 parents, 84% were in favour of change of uniform, 10% were not
and 6% had no preference
that pupils, parents and staff can see what it may look like.

SURPRISE VISITOR FOR BETH CARR
Girls PE Results
Netball
The netball season has only really just begun. The girls have played two matches
this year firstly against Holmes Chapel and then against Congleton. The results don’t
show the level of play shown by the girls and the improvements that have been
made over the past few years. All the girls have performed well and there is potential for all 4 netball teams
to achieve success this year. Future matches are against Sandbach and Middlewich.
Cross Country
There have been some fantastic performances in the cross country competitions this year. The girls have
really enjoyed the challenge and have responded well to the competitions. There were some exceptional
performances by Sophie Preece in year 7 who consistently finished in the top 10, Amy Keithley in year 8
who came in the top 20 and this was running against pupils who were in year 9 and Lauren Whittaker in
year 10 who also competed against pupils older than her and she had a top finish of 5th which was
excellent.
All the girls should be very proud of their achievements and all of them improved their finishing positions
with each competition which shows the level of commitment being shown by our pupils at Shavington High
School.
'Lauren Platt and Mr Balabil welcoming Jayne Fox,
the professional photographer, at Shavington High School.'
We are delighted that the judging of the SSAT National Photography
Competition has now taken place and our student entry by Lauren Platt has
been judged the winner of the North West Region of the first stage of the
competition.
Lauren has won a regional prize valued at £800 which incorporates two
elements. First of all she will receive an Olympus MJU 1010 digital compact
camera, with memory card and camera case, for her personal use, and in
addition, our school will complete a Ward-Hendry "Story Board“ project
which incorporates a photography shoot in school, from which the imagery
captured will be used to design and produce two x (AO scale) Foamex "Story
Boards" for installation in our school premises following the end of the
competition.
Lauren then went on to storyboard a life of the school for the next stage of
the competition to then be entered into stage two of the competition. This
involves all nine regional "Story Board" projects being judged against each other in advance of the SSAT
National Conference, taking place on 25th/26th November 2010 at the ICC, Birmingham, where three of the
nine will be announced as National Winners. The winner will receive an additional prize package worth
£5,000 for the winning school incorporating £3,000 worth of photographic studio equipment and an
additional £2,000 of Ward-Hendry Visual Marketing project. Mrs White is attending this event.

As the festive period approaches Mr Clark would like to remind our parents and carers
that this years concert will be taking place on Tuesday 14th December from 7.30pm to

Mr Clark would like to give special thanks to Joanne Sharples, Manager of the Spar
Supermarket at Wells Green for kindly donating mince pies for our Christmas Concert.
I am sure our audience will appreciate these at the interval!
Remembrance Day
Mr Clark is requesting past Music pupils of Shavington High School to make contact
and let us know what are you doing now in terms of music/musical career. This could be, for
instance, studying at College/University/Music College/ Teaching or employed within the music industry.
Mr Clark is hoping to set up a ‘Where are they now’ display which we believe would be a fantastic
motivational tool for our young learners and also a good way of keeping track of our past talented
musicians.

Booked Up
All year 7 pupils have received a free book as part of the Booked Up programme
which is run by the Booktrust charity and supported by publishers and the
Department of Education. Pupils watched a DVD of authors and children talking
about the 13 books on offer before making their selection. The books are also now
available in the Library. We hope pupils will enjoy their chosen book and perhaps
swap their book with friends or borrow the Library copies of other titles.
The Librarian would be interested to know if any students or parents are using these
links. Please e-mail her at downardk@shavington.cheshire.sch.uk
Reading Club
We are taking part in the Cheshire Schools’ Book Award. Librarians in Cheshire
Schools have picked a shortlist of six recent books for teenagers. Reading groups in
schools will pick the winner. We have until 20th May 2011 to read the books and vote
for our favourite title. This is not only open to members of the Reading Club but to
all students, teachers and parents. Copies of the books are available in the Library.

such as information about gases such as helium, hydrogen and nitrogen. My highlight of the trip was the
part when Dr Rossington inhaled hydrogen and then a very heavy gas which made his voice go extremely
high then very low’ Joel McCallum 8JC

PUPILS AT LUNCHTIME
The vast majority of our pupils enjoy lunchtime at school and make use of Cafe Options, the Library, sports
facilities and social areas. We have a few pupils who choose to go home at lunchtime, and have had parental
permission to do so.
There are, however, a small number of pupils leaving the site and using the community at lunchtime, which is
leading to complaints!
Please support us in reminding our young people that they must either remain in school, or have permission
to go home, for the lunch time. Pupils causing a nuisance in the community will have to spend lunchtimes
with a senior member of staff in school. Thank you.
Donations Required!!!
In many of the African communities you will see children playing football in their
bare feet on rubble-strewn ground. Boots For Africa collect your old football
boots and deliver them to the children and adults of Africa.
The ‘Boots For Africa’ appeal aims to help develop the skills and fitness of
disadvantaged children, and provide more children with the opportunity to enjoy
the beautiful game. Recently, Umbro has also agreed to donate their second hand
boots. So far, over 30,000 pairs of boots have been sent, courtesy of Virgin
Airlines.
What YOU do
Drop your used boots in at your local Collection Point: Pupil Reception at School,
HSS Tool Hire (Mill Street, Crewe) or Crewe Alexandra Football Ground) and
‘Boots For Africa’ will collect and ship them to Africa.
What WE do
We have a distribution network throughout Africa and have already arranged to
send boots to communities in South Africa, Ethiopia, Ghana, Zambia, Tanzania,
Nigeria and Kenya.
Religious Education
The RE department is organising a Crime and Punishment study day for KS4 pupils as part of
their GCSE RS studies. It will take place in the Spring term.
The RE department is organising a Hindu experience Day in the summer term for feeder
primary pupils.
Year 11 Full Course GCSE RS pupils have been invited to attend a study day on Religion and
Controversial Issues at Chester cathedral in March 2011.
Now a regular date in the Congleton calendar, The BIG KISS
(Knowledge, Information Sharing and Support) returned to the
Congleton Town Hall once again this year.
The BIG KISS is a local Careers, Jobs and Training Open Day and
aims to connect employment skills and education at a local level.
The BIG KISS was held on Thursday 21st October at Congleton Town
Hall.
Visitors had access to over 30 stands providing the opportunity to talk one to one with local
employers such as Siemens, Britannia Building Society (representing the Co-op Group), TMC
Creative, Diamond Electronics and Howarth HR. Visitors also benefited from employment and
education advice from exhibitors such as Connexions, Total People, Congleton Learning Partnership,
The British Army, Cheshire Constabulary and various local schools, colleges and universities.
Mrs Serventi We went to Congleton Town Hall to a careers day. We went around various stands
offering training, further education, higher education and apprenticeships. This gave all
of us a bigger insight into what other opportunities are available for us. I found it really
interesting and we all came away with plenty of freebies!! Graham Witter

Well done to the U16s girls Badminton team in their victories over Eaton Bank
4-1 and Sandbach Girls 3-2 in the School Sport Partnership tournament.
The U16s boys Badminton team narrowly missed out on reaching the final of
the tournament with victory over Eaton Bank 3-2 and a loss to Middlewich 1-4.
After wins against Middlewich, our Year 10 team have been knocked out of the
tournament with a hard fought loss of 3-5 in difficult conditions at Tytherington.
Year 11 had a fantastic win against Brine Leas 1-0 and are now in the quarter
finals .
Well done to all who took part. You have done the school proud .
FILM CLUB
Film Club takes place on Tuesdays from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. It has been a great success and well
received across all year groups. Film Club is a great opportunity for pupils to relax and watch a
film and to then discuss and share their ideas in a review forum. Star pupils Damien Breathen
(9ES) and Olivia Pointon (7TA) are two committed members who have written a series of
reviews based on the films we have watched. Films so far have included „UP‟, „Meet the Parents‟
and „Marley and Me‟. Pupils‟ reviewed the latest film „Marley and Me‟ saying “it was hugely
entertaining but hard to fight back the tears due to its emotional ending”. Miss Taylor and Mr
Mackin are currently looking to appoint film club ambassadors who can become involved in the
running of Film Club.
LIVING THEATRE
The Living Theatre Group began on Thursday 9th November. This is a great opportunity for
pupils of all ages to experience bringing popular texts to life through performance. Pupils are
already getting excited at the prospect of creating a „Mad Hatter‟s Tea Party‟ adapted from the
all time classic „Alice and Wonderland‟.
Half-term Mathematics Revision Day for Year 11
Well done to all the Year 11 pupils who came in over half-term to spend a
morning revising for their Mathematics GCSE which they took in November.
The importance of getting at least a C in English and Maths has never been
greater. With many colleges only giving level 3 places to pupils with at least 5
GCSEs at C or above including English and Maths it is great to see so many
pupils taking responsibility for their own future. Although in January some
may not have achieved the goal, the fact that they are trying so hard now bodes
well for their results in the summer. Pupils who do achieve a C at this stage will
have a great opportunity to improve further and aim for a higher grade in the
summer with the knowledge that they have already ‘banked’ a C which cannot
be taken away. We look forward to sharing their success in January.

We have introduced ‘Performance of the Week’ and by the end of last half term a draw was
made from all the pupils that performed well in extra-curricular sport.
The first winner for the girls was Sophie Preece in Year 7, who week on week showed
fantastic performances in the Schools Cross Country Matches.
The winner for the boys was Elliott Brereton in Year 8, who consistently performed well in
football.
Well done to all pupils who gained a ‘Performance of the Week’ last Half Term. The next
draw will take place before we break for Christmas.
Cyber Bullying
Mobile, internet and wireless technologies have increased the pace of
communication and brought benefits to users worldwide, but their popularity
provides increasing opportunities for misuse, one of which is cyber bullying.
Unlike other forms of bullying, cyber bullying can follow children and young
people into their private spaces and outside school hours.
There are some simple actions that can help keep us safe from cyber bullying:
Use a free email address online like Hotmail or Googlemail that you can get rid
of should you need to
Treat others with respect and expect them to do the same
Keep passwords a secret
If you don‟t want the world to know, then don‟t post it!
Never post personal information online that can identify you in any way
A member of staff will talk to you the same day and will go through your
statement if one has been made at home, or will take a statement.
The incident will be logged and your Head of Year, if they are not already
dealing with the incident, will be informed.
An investigation will take place. This will usually take the form of your Head of
Year talking separately to the bully/bullies and to any witnesses.
Action will be taken.
If it seems appropriate, you and the bully may meet with your Tutor or Head of
Year to discuss what has been happening and to agree a way forward.
The school may organise a conference involving all parties. The Head of Year or
Education Welfare Officer could chair such a conference. Some incidents may
warrant the intervention of the school Police Liaison Officer, who might organise
a more formal „Restorative Justice‟ conference.
Amazingly all 32 entrants were successful and now all have their work
published in their first anthology! pictured are some of our budding
novelists and Mrs Bromley!
Through the School Sports Partnership, we have been funded to increase lunchtime provision for
our pupils in sport.
Every Tuesday and Wednesday lunchtime we have ‘Street Sports’ working in our school, providing
pupils with extra activities in which they can take part. ‘Street Sports’ are qualified coaches who
work for Cheshire East to promote physical activity and increase participation for young people.
These sessions will run from this half term through to February 2011.
We have allocated the coaches to work with our lower school pupils; they help to coach and
umpire various activities, ranging from handball to cricket. In the first two weeks of this program
starting, we have had between 51 and 65 pupils taking part.
We have been fortunate enough to be allocated a cricket coach to work with our Year 7 & 8 girls
on a Monday after-school for a one hour session. We are hoping not only to increase the number
of girls involved in extra-curricular activities, but also to enter a team in a competition in the
future.
We have 18 Year 7 pupils working in the ‘Interactive Suite’ in the Leisure Centre on a Wednesday
after-school; and the same opportunity is available to Year 8s on a Friday after-school. Many of
the pupils in Year 7 have not taken part in extra-curricular PE; through the Partnership funding
we have been able to increase participation throughout lower school.
During the half-term break in October, two of our Year 10 boys gained ‘Leadership’ awards in
Football and Basketball.
Gavin McKeith and Sam Klein took part in the ‘Junior Football Organisers Award’; Sam Klein also
took part in the ‘Basketball Young Leaders Award’. They are now all qualified to coach and
officiate in those sports, and they will be involved in working with pupils from our local Primaries.
