This document discusses a single phase dual converter with an RLE load. It covers the four quadrant operation of dual converters used in DC drives. Key points include:
- Dual converters allow for bidirectional power flow and four quadrant operation by controlling the firing angles of the converters.
- There are two modes of a dual converter - non-circulating current mode where one converter operates at a time, and circulating current mode where both operate simultaneously.
- Applications include direction and speed control of DC motors and wherever reversible DC power is required such as industrial variable speed DC drives.
- The document includes simulations of the dual converter operating in each quadrant by varying the firing angles.

Why α1+ α2= 1800 ? The Output voltage is given by:
V0 = V01 = -V02
Vmax Cosα1 = -Vmax Cosα2
Cosα1 = Cos (180o - α2) OR Cosα1 = Cos (180o + α2)
α1 + α2 = 180o & α1 - α2 = 180o
Since, the firing angle can never be greater than 1800.
So, α1+ α2= 1800

Modes of Operation of Dual Converter There are two functional modes: 1. Non-circulating current mode 2. Circulating mode. Non-Circulating Current Mode One converter will perform at a time. There is no circulating current between the converters.
Circulating Current Mode
In this mode, both converters will be in the ON condition at the same time. So circulating current is present.
