1 OUTLINE
1.1 Configure the System Hierarchy
System Hierarchy is the folder definition and arrangement of the Plant or Project. The Hierarchy is
used to group the objects according to discipline or area/unit during modeling on SP3D.
Moreover, when we want to refer to the other discipline's object, if it is hard to recognize where the
object is modeled in the hierarchy, it would impede the project execution, so the hierarchy should not
be deep to understand easily.
This training will help you set up the System Hierarchy.
The System Hierarchy appears on SP3D like Explorer of Windows, which is called Workspace
Explorer.
To organize the Objects on SP3D, you need to have a System Hierarchy set up in advance.
One of the administrators must set up the System Hierarchy, where all users can refer to the
Hierarchy.
There are two ways to create System Hierarchy.
One is to create manually on SP3D, and the other way is to import Excel sheet wherein a template is
used to define the Hierarchy setting.

2 CONFIGURE OF SYSTEM HIERARCHY

2.1 Configure the system hierarchy manually

(1) Start up SmartPlant 3D

(2) Set the Work Space using Define Work Space command.

(3) Click Task > Systems and Specifications.

(4) Select the Plant on the left side of the Explorer.

Click down-arrow button on the Tool bar and select New Generic System from the type list.

(5) New Generic System will be added on the list, and then double click on the name and change it to
‘JGC_Training’.

(6) After creating ‘JGC_Training’ hierarchy, create different types of hierarchies under this
hierarchy.

• Generic System

• Conduit System

• HVAC System

• Electrical System

• Equipment System

• Piping System

• Pipeline System

• Structure System

• Unit System

• Area System

2.2 Creating System Hierarchy by importing Excel data

2.2.1 Preparing the Excel file

When SP3D is installed in your PC, a sample data is included, located at the following folders. Copy
the sample file and rename.
C:¥Program Files¥SmartPlant¥3D¥SystemsAndSpecs¥Import¥ImportData_Sample.xls

Referring to the sample input the Hierarchy configuration on SYSTEM_HIERARCHY sheet.

2.2.2 Import the System Hierarchy

(1) Start up SmartPlant 3D

(2) Set the Work Space using Define Work Space command.

(3) Click Task > Systems and Specifications.

(4) Click Tools > Import Systems Hierarchy from Excel.

(5) Set the Excel file to import and select a destination for the log file. And then click ‘Import’ button.

(6) After importing, click the ‘Finish’ button.

(7) System hierarchy from Excel file is imported as in the following example.

2.3 Creating Pipeline System by importing Excel data

2.3.1 Preparing the Excel file

Creating Pipeline System Hierarchy is somewhat similar to 2.2.1 Preparing the Excel file.
In the case of JGC SP3D modeling environment, it is supposed to use SPPID (SmartPlant P&ID) and
SPI (SmarPlant Instrumentation) interface. The hierarchy must be defined as 【Plant System】>【Area
System】>【Unit System】 (P・A・U) by SPI constraints, and then set the Pipeline System under the
Unit System.
However, using the Import method, we can only import Pipeline System under a Piping System only.
As a workaround, we must create a Piping System and a dummy Unit System. For the Piping System,
name it same as the Unit name (e.g. 021, 031, 051). And for the Unit System, use the same name but
add a dummy character to distinguish it from the Piping System.
After Import is finished, just move the Pipeline Systems that were created under the Piping System to
the dummy Unit Systems.
Delete the empty Piping Systems and then rename the Unit Systems to the correct Unit Name.

(1) In SYSTEM_HIERARCHY sheet, input the Piping System and Unit System, with their
respective Unit names as shown below.

Piping System where the

Pipeline will be imported

Unit Name
+Dummy Unit System

Piping System where the

Pipeline will be imported

Unit Name
+Dummy Unit System

(2) Create a new sheet and rename it with the same Piping System name which you defined in the
SYSTEM_HIERARCHY sheet.

Parent System should

be same as sheet name.

Sheet name should be the same as

Piping System to be imported.

※Caution
Piping Spec can be defined at the same time as Pipeline System.
This means that only the specified Piping Spec may be used for that specific Pipeline System.
If you use several Piping Specs, leave this column blank.
