Footprint 25
Jap Sam 2020 ISBN 9789492852182 Acqn 30587
Pb 19x26cm 138pp ills £21.95

In Footprint 24 we want to discuss the implications of the neoliberal housing paradox for the
discipline of architecture. Re-theorising the architecture of dwelling is urgent to critically assess
past and current experiences and provide insights to engage with future challenges. Can this be
an opportunity to reiterate the social relevance of housing and thus attract the best planners,
urban designers and architects to contribute innovative solutions to accommodate the 'great
number'? Which possibilities are there to engage the architecture discipline in the housing
question once more? Which critical approaches to the housing issue after the neoliberal turn can
be used to re-conceptualise the architecture of dwelling in a post-neoliberal period? This issue of
Footprint aims at examining how the housing policies that unfolded since the 1980s have
contributed to re-theorise the architecture of dwelling as a social and spatial practice.

Erik Odijk - The Academy Of The Sublime

Jap Sam 2020 ISBN 9789492852212 Acqn 30749
Pb 27x36cm 104pp col ills £30

Erik Odijk's 'The Academy of the Sublime' presents drawings, works in public space, and
photographs and film stills by the Dutch artist. Odijk is best known for his awe-inspiring large
drawings made in his studio or on location, in which fragments from nature always form the most
important visual elements. With graphic design by Studio Joost Grootens and contributions by
various writers, the publication is an ode to attentive observation, something the artist sees as the
connection between language and image. It consists of three large-format "magazines" illustrating
the three distinct disciplines in the artist's oeuvre, and shows a selection of Odijk's highly
immersive work from 2005 to the present.

The World as Project - A Political Theory of Design

Jap Sam 2020 ISBN 9789492852236 Acqn 30750
Pb 21x30cm 48pp £13

Architect and educator Friedrich von Borries argues in this manifesto for a design (of survival,
society, the self) that evades the totalitarian logic of securitisation and imagines new forms of
living together. Humans have always been forced to design the conditions under which they live.
But if this occurs in such a way that our options for action are limited, it could be thought of as
subjugation. In the past, designers simply created objects. Today, practically everything is
designed, from processes to refugee camps. In such a world, it is paramount to stop judging
design solely on aesthetic criteria. 'The World as Project' advocates the need for a political theory
of design.
