CHAPTER 1
The Problem and its Scope

Introduction
Drugs are exposed to many people, we
hear almost every day, over the television the
effects of using addictive drugs. Drug abuse is
one form of criminal act which destroy our
peace. It is sad to note, that most of the
victims shown by the police and court records
belongs to the teenage bracket. If such act
flourished among the youth, obviously our
country would become a dumpsite of sick and
have many useless young people.
Parents have dream for their children
that one day they send their children to school
to finish a course, to qualify them in a stable
job, but that ambition have disappeared with
the smoke of marijuana, that took them of
trying other dangerous drugs. They would not
be going straight as a student due to drug
abuse.
We focused on this study to discover a
solution, to minimize this kind of problem in
our society right now, because drug abuse is
totally eradicated.
The purpose of the study is to pity the
helpless victims of drug abuse. A drug abuser
cannot actively participate in any development
undertaking, he or she is sickly and carefree,
inutile to society. Be not indifferent against
drug abuse, ‘WE SAY NO TO DRUGS’.

Marijuana (Cannabis Sativa) is a
plant that grows in tropical regions. It’s
crushed Leaves, flowers, twigs and seeds are
mixed and wrapped into a cigarette reefer and
called” Marijuana cigarette”. It grows up to 15
to 20 feet in height. It is scientifically called
CANNABIS SATIVA L. It is an Indian hemp
plant and readily grows in temperature and
tropical climates in many parts of the world.
This includes the Philippines. It cultivated in
many countries for hemp Fiber. This hemp
fiber is used in making ropes and burlaps.
Although there are many varieties, it is now
generally agreed that they all belong to a
single species-CANNABIS SATIVA, which
exhibit variation because of genetic plasticity
and environmental conditions. Cannabis is
dioscious, i.e.,
It has separate male (staminate) and
female (pistillate) plants. The male plants are
taller and shortlived, dying after their polen is
shed. The female plants are bushier, pollinate
and survive until killed by frost or their seeds
are fully matured. Both types are
indistinguishable until the flower buds are well
developed. Male flower clusters usually have
little folliage and are borne in leaf axils as
loosely arranged clusters. The female clusters
are more densely packed. The flowering tops
of the female plant secrets a clear, varnish-like
resin “ hashish “ in the west and “ charas “ in
India. They contain the most concentrated
psychoactive material.
In the philippines “ Indian hemp “
otherwise known as “ Marijuana “, emrbraces
every kind and class of the plant cannabis
sativa from which the resin has not been
extracted, including cannabis americana,
hashish, bhang, ghaza, churus, and ganjah,
and embraces every kind, class and character
of Indian hemp, whether dried or fresh,
flowering of fruiting tops of the pistillate plant,
and all its geographic varities, whether as a
reefer, resin, extract, tincture, or in any form
or whatsoever.
In various localities of the world it is
known by various names-bombay tops, bhang,
ganjah, siddi, sabai (India); takrouri (Tunisis);
hashish (Turkey, Syria, Persia and Egypt);
charas (Central Asia, Chinese Turkestan);
Mexican name marijuana by which it is known
in Latin America and North America.
The leaves of the hemp plant are
usually finger-like broken into leaflets whose
edges are serrated in shape. Its leaflets are
usually odd in number. Young leaves number
from three leaflets. As the plant grows the
leaves’ leaflets also oddly multiply into 5, and
7, 9, 11, up to 13.
The most common leaflets numbers 5
and 7. Each of the larger leaves consist of 5 to
11 separate leaflets, all starting at the same
point from the stem. Each leaflet is serrated
(with notched) edges are veined. The upper
side of a fresh leaflet is deep green and the
lower side is lighter green. Leaves are smaller
at the top of the plant.
The stalk attains a height of 3 to 16
feet, but usually it grows from 4 to 6 feet when
harvested by the cultivator. The branches of
the hemp plant occur at opposite points on the
stalk, with alternate pairs at right angles at
intervals going up the stalk.
The male flowering tops of the hemp
plant appear conspicuously in sprays about 6
inches in length at the top; while the female
flowering tops at the end of each stalk and
branch of the female plant as it reaches
maturity; bears small leaves, twigs, flowers
and the fruits in abundance. The hulls or “
pods “ enclosing the fruit or seed are green
and sticky to the touch.
The female flowers are inconspicuous.
The top leaves, tops of the stalks including the
blossoms are rich in resinous glands that
produces the drug. The marijuana seed is small
and egg-shaped which have encircling ridges
with motley lacy marking on the surface.
Although the plant may vary according to local
soil and climate conditions and proximity of
other plants during growth, its seedlings
appear like tomato or amarillo seedlings from 1
to 2 weeks old.
Marijuana is usually taken by means of
ingesting or smoking the dried fragments
composing of leaves, stalks, seeds, and
sometimes including the roots by the drug
abusers. The dried pulverized fragments of the
leaves and flowering tops usually retain their
green color, but may also become brown or
brown-spotted, depending upon gathering time
and curing methods.
Cannabis Sativa, Cannabis Indica, and
Cannabis Americana or Cannabis Mexicana, are
the known generic names for the Indian hemp.
The dried plants are grinded and rolled into
cigarettes paper called papelitos. This is the
paper used in cigarette making. Once rolled ,
this is now called “ marijuana cigarette’’. It is
smoked as cigarette but some are using
improvised pipes for grinded parts. It is also in
the form of reefer , kilobricks, matchbox, and
many forms of containers.
Marijuana cigarette or any of its various
preparations when being smoked ,emits a very
pungent odor. It smell is like a burning grass of
rope or the scent emitted when a flat iron is
pressed against the fresh banana leaf.
Here are tips for identifying marijuana
cigarettes:
1.Flowers, leaves and fruiting tops of matured
plants are parts used in marijuana cigarettes.
Poison resin is more prevalent in these parts.
2.Tops of plants are gathered ,dried, pulverized
by hand , sifted to separate stems ,sects etc.
3.Cigarettes are usually hand rolled by using 2
or 3 cigarette papers, white or brown with the
ends crimped or tucked in to hold pulverized
marijuana.
4.Cigarettes are more slender than
tobacco cigarettes.
5.Sometimes called reefers, muggles,
weeds,hay butts,tea,sticks,mez,blaze,etc.
6.Early slang terms or street names given by
the users of various hipple families in the
country,brand names,such as:
Triple line – treated with barbs and
heroin
Eudorn-treated
Falling rain-treated
Century buds-treated
Willow Tree
Pahid uhog
Ordinary
Lagkitan-stronger line,consisting of flowering
tops and treated
Talbosan-consisting of flowering tops
and not treated.
Other slang terms used locally
are:damo,modems ,durog,bobo
bush,cannabis,hay,jive,grams,pot,lakbay
diwa,loco weed,love
weed,MJ,rope,pod,stick,tea,texas tea,etc.
Manicured marijuana is a finely ground
green substance that looks much like “
oregano’’.It is generally packaged in match
boxes, plastic bottles ,tins and other small
containers for retail sale. In brick form ,large
pieces of marijuana twigs ,stalks, leaves and
seeds have been compressed into blocks called
kilobricks measuring about 5 x 21/2 x 12
inches. Sometimes a finely processed veneer
covers the coarse brick core. Abusers usually
smoke marijuana in cigarettes ,hookahs or
pipes with small bowls . Some smokers make
removable tin foil bowls to hold the marijuana.
They also use wire “roach holder” or paper
clips to smoke the whole cigarette.

How do marijuana and other substances

affect health:
Definition of Marijuana;
According to Lualhati Fernando-Callo,
marijuana is a plant. Parts of the plant can be
made into cigarettes.Marijuana contains many
substances , including drugs, that affect people
in different ways.
Positive effects of Marijuana;
Marijuana makes the heartbeat faster
than it should. It makes some people dizzy or

harder . For example, a person who smokes
marijuana might have trouble remembering
facts or thinking clearly. Marijuana also affects
how a person sees. A person might not be able
to judge distances properly.
Scientist has found more than four
hundred different substances in marijuana. The
substances harm the lungs and the tubes that
lead to the lungs. Test have shown that
marijuana smoke can cause some of the
diseases that cigarette smoke causes,including
cancer.
According to Arlyn M. Dascil-Canete,
Marijuana is one example of Hallucinogens, are
drugs which affect sensation, thinking, self-
awareness and emotion. Changes in time and
space perception, delusions and hallucination
may be mild or overwhelming, depending on
the dose and quality of drugs.

considered to be the biggest producer of
Cannabis in the middle east Lebanon is also
became the transit country for cocaine from
south America to European illicit drugmarkets.
Spain – is known as the major transshipment
point for international drug traffickers in
Europe and became the paradise of drug users
in Europe.
South America – Columbia, Peru, Uruguay, and
Panama are the principal sources of all cocaine
supply in the world due to the robust
production of the coca plants. Source of the
cocaine drug.
Mexico – is known in the world to be the
number one producer of marijuana cannabis
sativa.
Philippines – is second to mexico as to the
production of marijuana. It is also became the
major transshipment point for the worldwide
distribution of illegal drugs particularly shabu
and cocaine from Taiwan and South America.
It is also noted that Philippines today is known
as the paradise of drug abusers in Asia
India – is the center of the world drug map,
leading to rapid addiction among its people.
Indonesia – Northern Sumatra has traditionally
been the main cannabis growing area in
Indonesia. Ball Indonesia is an important
transit point for drugs en route to Australia and
New Zealand.
Singapore, Malaysia, and Thailand – is the
most favorable sites of drug distribution from
the “Golden Triangle” and other parts of Asia.
According to Panganiban, Alma Jose,
Cordova and Moreno
Marijuana [ Cannabis Sativa] – General
history of Narcotics. The first written reference
to hemp as an exhilarant appeared in Northern
Iran. The Assyrians also are known to have
used the plant as intoxicant, perhaps two
centuries earlier. Although no one knows when
it was first discovered, the Chinese emperor
Shen Neng, in the 28th century B.C ,is said to
have recommended the medicinal properties of
hemp for the relief of female workers , gout,
rheumatism, malaria, beri-beri, constipation
and absent mindedness.
From Northern Iran, knowledge of marijuana
probably diffused to India, where according to
historical sources, its use became part of hindu
religion. Scriptures of the hindu religion refer
to hemp as source of happiness and laughter
provoker. The word Marijuana is a Mexican
Spanish word used to identify the Indian hemp
plant , Cannabis sativa. However, there is
disputed legend about the earliest preparations
from the plant. In the speech of Mr.Myles J.
Ambrose , U.S. Commissioner of Customs,
delivered at the 78th annual conference of the
IACP , he contented, Historical records Indicate
the narcotic was first used in the asia minor
area , the middle east and in Asiatic countries.
Geographically, the use of marijuana is more
widespread than any other narcotic. The resin
is called “ hashis” “hasheesh”, “charas”,”bhang
ganjah” or “gunjah” depending upon the locale
from which it came.
While records appearing in the “ tales of the
Arabian nights” as printed in the marijuana
pamphlet published in 1972. Justice
Department, mentioned among others, that
the words “hashish” and “assassin” are
believed to have been derived from the
leader’s name hasan or “hashashin”, a muslim
cult leader in the 11th century who fed his
disciples a preparation made from the resin of
the female hemp plant as a reward for their
successful assassinations.
As early as 7th century A.D, the muslims began
to move westward and introduced hemp and
its euphoric products to northern africa and
other bordering lands in the mediterranean.
From the mediterranean, hemp spread
northward into europe, but its use as an
intoxicant did not take hold. There, it was
known only for its textile properties, although
the seeds of the hemp plant were at times for
medicinal purposes.
Hemp was first brought to the Western
Hemisphere by the Spaniards who introduced it
to mexico. It was during these periods when
the name marijuana was given to the hemp
plant cannavis sativa. Somewhat later, the new
England settlers brought it with them from
europe to make rope for ships, as well as to
make clothings and hats.
By the 19th century, some prominent European
and American writers were making use of
cannavis for purposes of “self exploration”. In
1910, Mexican laborers brought it into wider
use in the united states. The use spread
gradually at first but rapidly spread in the
1960’s to its present extent.
Narcotic Drugs: Causes and Influences
Marijuana;
The most commonly abused narcotics is
marijuana. It was lured young and adults alike.
It is ranked number one (1) because of the
abundance of supply and easy availability. Its
cultivation can be anywhere in our tropical
country. Indulging in marijuana smoking tend
to develop moral and social values among our
youth and even to our adults. To many,
specially among the social class, it is simply
personal preference, no worse than having a
few hard drinks of alcohol. Women now are
drinking beer as a status symbol, accompanied
with a good feeling from a stick of marijuana.
Many college students try marijuana primarily
because they think they will have a dramatic
new experience, rather than for any specefic
benefit. This suggests that marijuana may
serve as an “in” thing among certain groups of
students. Some find smoking “pot” very
interesting and worthwhile. Others are just
curious to know its effect on them.
Marijuana use is linked to change values and
activities on school campuses among students
taking “pot”. Surveys showed that an apparent
low grade is observed among users than the
non-users. This is true in college and high
school students. It was also found that social
life is the key to its spread. Pot smoking is
mainly a group activity, especially among those
who use it only occasionally. Friends are the
usual link between existence of the drug and
his actual use. The habit goes down from
students who may have been looked up to as
sophisticated social leaders to those who aspire
for higher status. Whenever there is an
intersection of college and high school life, the
possibility of transmission of use to younger
student is great.
The collection of belief and activities related to
marijuana use have been called “hangloose”
ethic. Generally, the ethic is anti-
establishment, and it includes such elements
as participation in “happenings” and mass
protest, reading underground newspaper and
dissatisfaction with the education being
received.
Marijuana use by students was associated with
drinking, smoking, and early or steedy dating.
Obviously, there is a casual relationship.
It is really difficult to determine from the
present studies whether such personality
characteristics are direct results of marijuana
use or whether the drug merely magnifies or
brings to attention already existent problems.
Marijuana Abusers;
These individuals are difficult to
recognize unless they are under the influence
of the drug at the time they are being
observed.
In the early stages student may appear
animated and hysterical with rapid loud talking
and bursts of laughter.
In the latter stages the student is sleepy
or stuporous.
Depth perception is distorted, making
driving dangerous.

PRESENTATION OF DATA , FINDING ,
RECOMMENDATION ,and SUMMARY

FINDINGS

As we gather an information researchers found

out that the lack of parental guidance, family
problem, financial problem and love problem,
are most reasons of the respondents which
effects their
living and engage themselves into taking
prohibited drugs.

This study shows that the respondents are in

need of care and love from their family.

CONCLUSION
Based on the findings of the study, we
conclude that the respondents were engaged
into illegal
drug use, due to lack supervision of parent.

RECOMMENDATION
Based on the gathered information and
conclusion, we recommend having seminar for
the
respondents, teenagers and together with the
