"HARLEY-
DAVIDSON"
MOTORCYCLES
1905 and Now up to
2008
rcycles and particularly the Harley-Davidson have always interested me.
ough I have never owned one, it was something that was always on my mind.
e been collecting pictures of old cars, trucks and motorcycles for some time and my collection of Harley-Davidson
res became such that I thought I would share them. This collection has grown considerably since I started this web
in 2006. I even decided to include some of the newer bikes and now have Harley's up to 2008.
please forgive me but I have included some nice old English bikes.
of these images have come from news groups but like with my car pages, I invite any of my visitors to submit the
ite Harley-Davidson picture or a British bike. All I ask is that they give me their name and if possible where they l
t address are not required. If you like, a brief story on the bike would be nice.

manufacturing motorcycles.
They continued to build motorcycles and by 1908 they had built 154.
Around this time William Davidson joined the company and it wasn't long before they had 20
employees and a new factory.
In 1909 Bill Harley thought that they needed a new engine. he took on the project to built a V Twin
engine. It turned out to be a 1000 cubic centimeter, 45 degree V twin engine producing seven horse
power. This 45 degree V twin became one of the most recognizable symbols of the Harley-Davidson.
The bar and shield logo came in 1910 and is still with them today.
The F Head engine was introduced in 1911 and was the main power plant until 1929 when it was
replaced by the flat head engine.
By 1912 Harley-Davidson was ready to expand again into a new 6 story plant.
They also started exporting at this time.
From 1914 to the 1920's there was much advancement, such as the addition of a sidecar, the three-speed
sliding-gear transmission, and the change in styling, which looked more like the motorcycles of today.
In 1928 the first twin-cam engine and front wheel brakes were available. This enabled the motorcycle to
reach speeds of more then 85 mph.
The 1930's saw Harley-Davidson break more speed records.
In 1932 the three-wheel Servi-Car was introduced which would become a common police and
commercial vehicle.
In 1936 the Knucklehead was launched and the Panhead followed in 1947.
This machine made the Harley-Davidson American's motorcycle of choice.
During World War II the Harley took an active roll. Civilian production was just about suspended and
all efforts were concentrated on war production.
Once the war was over in 1945 civilian production commenced again.
In 1949 the Hydra-Glide was introduced using hydraulic front forks.
The 1950's were not a good time at Harley-Davidson.
The British with their Triumph and BSA motorcycles had 40% of the market.
These were smaller, lighter and in some cases faster bikes.
This problem was met head on and in 1957 with the introduction of the Sportster.
The English stayed on the scene until the Japanese bikes hit the market in the early 60's.
They were small, under powered but cute and did a lot to bring motorcycle to the attention
of the general public.
However they didn't stay small and cute very long.
Companies like Honda, Kawasaki and Suzuki learned real fast and made some real
fast motorcycles.
Harley was almost put under at this time but they fought back.
In 1969 Harley Davidson merged with American Machine and Foundry Company.
This merger gave them needed cash but produced some poorly built bikes and Harley&American
Machine and Foundry Company's reputation suffered greatly.
Harley-Davidson did survive and in 1971 the ldquo; Cruiser” was born. It was a sporty looking
bike with the frame and power train of the FL series.
This motorcycle was a great success and enabled Harley-Davidson to move to a 400,000 square foot
plant in York, Pennsylvania.
The 1970's saw Harley win a great many races including four consecutive years of winning the AMA
Grand National Championships in dirt track racing.
I will leave the history of the Harley-Davidson at this point with saying that from here on Harley-
Davidson never looked back.
There are many other good web sites that will take you beyond the 1970's

Post WW II Harley-Davidson's
A History of the Panhead by Greg Lew (Panhead Greg)
1948 was the first year for the " tin top" overhead valve version of the bike.
These were offered in both 61 CI and 74 CI models.
Flathead side valve motors were still very popular during the 40's,
The displacement of the flatties ranged from 45", 74" to 80" but heat and oiling issues favored the OHV design.
Typically, police departments would order the E type motors, or 61Ci
This was both utilitarian and less expensive, but the 61s had a smaller lift cam that allowed the bikes
easier starting in hotter conditions. Stop and Go stuff...
Now, 1948 was an unusual year, because it was also the last year for the Spring Fork front end, but first year
PANHEAD!!
Over zealous engineers at the factory were always a little ahead with design, This was evident in 1965, when a frame
change, electrical change, and design change pre-dated the
shovel head intro in '66.
And historically, you can see that the production guys were busy selling in stock, manufactured inventory. David
Monahan, Harley expert and noted restorer owns a 1949 Spring Fork Panhead.
Sometimes the right hand doesn't want to know what the left hand is doing...Especially when there are paychecks
involved.
In 49, the Hydra-Glide was introduced which, by definition, was the first hydraulic suspension bike produced by the
factory.
Similarly, the Duo-Glide trademark was introduced in 1958 and had BOTH front and rear suspension.
The Electra-Glide surfaced in 1965, 12 volt system and frame change were introduced.
Unfortunately, the Shovelhead design was only still on the drawing board.
Or, as I might guess, they simply wanted to use up the existing inventory of Panhead motors sitting around.

Scrambles
And who can remember these races?
Gets the blood flowing just looking at it.
DATE: August 1966
CLUB: Keystone M.C. of Emmaus, PA
TRACK: TT Scrambles
EVENT: 250cc Expert Class
A pair of Harley-Davidson 250cc Sprints sporting white plates with black numerals. That said, they must be expert
riders. I vaguely remember a couple guys with those green racing vests invading District Six from New York or points
north back in the mid-sixties. They got around the tracks pretty well when they showed up but were basically no
competition for the locals. Judging from the dust, they were back-markers at this stage of the race BUT at least they
managed to find each other and race for bragging rights in the Aermacchi Camp and in the end, that was what it was
all about anyway.
The rider pictured in our recent Dumbass Photo Caption Contest #2 was Randy Bynoe (#511) aboard his trusty 250cc
Harley-Davidson Sprint.
Randy Bynoe (#511) was in his mid-to-late-fifties when he competed in the District Six scrambles in the late 1960s and
early 1970s. His fellow competitors, promoting club members and District Six officials affectionately referred to him as
“Old Time Randy”. Randy was a regular fixture on his 250cc Harley-Davidson Sprint during the first
few years that I covered the scrambles scene. Surprisingly, “Old Time Randy” showed up with a new-
fangled Bultaco Pursang in the early-seventies and parked his old H-D Sprint. I guess he just got tired of chasing them
and went with the “If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.” philosophy.
Randy’s teammate was Cliff Hoke (#510) who competed in the Open Amateur Class aboard a Harley-Davidson
Sportster. He was usually the sole Harley rider in that class. Cliff was also up in years but I never heard anyone refer to
him as “Old Time Cliff”. He was simply “Old Time Randy’s” buddy. What was
even more amazing than these two old-timers still competing at their age was the distance that they traveled to the races
each weekend. Randy Bynoe hailed from Amityville, Long Island, New York and his buddy Cliff Hoke was from
Jamaica, Long Island, New York. I can only imagine what those long rides to and from the District Six tracks in that
old panel truck must have been like week in and week out.

This 1997 Harley-Davidson Road King belongs to Jim Steffee, Red Lion, Pa.
The bike is mainly stock, with the exception of an after market DFO, and a nicely done custom
paint. He wanted a retro paint scheme for my classic looking bike, he chose a scheme that was
used on the 1933 VL's.The painter had artist's license after the desired scheme was agreed upon,
meaning the bags and side covers, I think it's an awesome job.
