Cultural mask project

ELC
Tutorial pictures and descriptions

This are all the materials I

used for my cultural mask.

First, I cut all shapes out of

cardboard.

Then, I cut all shapes out of thick

white and black A4 paper.

After that, I cut the tusk out of

cardboard and thick, black A4 paper.
When I was done with that, I painted on the
thick white and black A4 shaped to show that it
is an elephant and to give it an emotion

Then, I pasted the thick white and

black A4 shapes which I painted on
the cardboard to make it firm.

After that, I pasted all the shapes on

each other to make it a real mask.

When I was done with that, I made a

white elastic with tape on the mask
so you are able to wear it.
Preparation cultural mask

1. What is the purpose of your mask?

I will make a cultural elephant mask and divide it in two parts.

The purpose of the first side of my mask (endangered species) is that it will give power to stop
poachers and to protect itself.

The purpose of the second side of my mask (Indian culture) is to be part of a religion, to let for
example poachers scare how powerful and important elephants are and to protect the elephant.

2. Explain your purpose

The purpose of the first side of my mask (endangered species) is that it will give power to stop
poachers and to protect itself because an elephant is on some places on earth an endangered
species and I want to scare the poachers to protect the elephant. That’s why this is the purpose
of the first side of my mask.

The purpose of the second side of my mask (Indian culture) is to be part of a religion, to let for
example poachers scare how powerful and important elephants are and to protect the elephant
because in India the elephant is a holy animal and it is a ritual to decorate them with a lot of
colours and figures. The elephant has in the Indian culture a connection with gods. That’s also
the reason why they are so important for the people and why they want to protect and not hurt
them. Like this I want to scare the poachers how powerful and important elephants are. So this is
the purpose of the second side of my mask.

3. Where did you get your inspiration from?

I got my inspiration from pictures from the internet and little

figurines in my room. The pictures that I saw on the internet
and the little figurines in my room showed a lot of colours and
figures on an elephant. This
was the reason why I wanted
to make an elephant. I later
thought, that there are also
endangered species. It was a
nice idea to divide the mask
in two sides and to make
also a part which shows the
endangered species because
elephants have also two
sides. Some are powerful
and others are less.
4. What features of the face will be exaggerated and why?

The features of the first side of my mask (endangered species) will be that the elephant has
no tusk and that there is blood. The elephant has also a grey colour (sometimes a little bit
brown) like the elephants from the endangered species.

The features of the second side of my mask (Indian culture) will be that there are a lot of
colours and figures. The colours are really intense and the figures are most of the time
flowers, stripes, dots and a lot of other shapes! It will powerfully emit like elephants in the
Indian culture.

5. What emotions will you try to convey? (=show)

The emotion that I will try to convey on the first side of my mask (endangered species) will
be sadness, because the elephant has no tusk and a lot of pain.

The emotions that I will try to convey on the second side of my mask (Indian culture) will be
joy, because the elephant is happy and powerful and gives you a happy and nice feeling. The
emotion is also a bit love, because people protect the elephants for the Indian culture and
give them love. Like this, the elephant gives also a lovely feeling back.

6. What materials will you be using?

The materials that I will be using are cardboard, thick white and black A4 paper, paint, glue, a
scissors, water, a paint palette, a pencil, an eraser, brushes, a ruler, tape and a white elastic.

7. What element should I add to symbolise and communicate the purpose and role
of your character? (Think about the meaning of colour, shapes, symbols that you
might use.)

The elements that I add to symbolise and communicate the purpose and role of my character
on the first side of my mask (endangered species) are grey colours and not much shapes. I
will add a tear as symbol to symbolise sadness. I hope that this will scare the poachers.

The elements that I add to symbolise and communicate the purpose and role of my character
on the second side of my mask (Indian culture) are intense (bright) colours and happy shapes
like flowers, etc. to symbolise the Indian culture. I will also make symbols like dots which
stand for the Indian culture. Like this I will communicate a happy and powerful feeling to
scare poachers and to protect the elephants.
