What’s New

Multiplying decimals is the same as multiplying whole numbers except for the
placement of the decimal points.

Let’s take a look at this example:

63 63
x 31 x 31

What can you say about the numbers? Is the process of multiplying whole
numbers and decimal numbers the same?

Do you see any difference? What is it?

Yes, the only difference is the decimal point. The next example will discuss
further the steps in multiplying decimal numbers.

7

GRADE 6
___________________________________________________________________
Mod5Q1W5:Numbers and Number Sense

3.4 is 3 ones and 4 tenths.

3.4×10=10×3.4 is 10 groups of 3.4, which we can think of as 10 groups with 3

ones and 4 tenths in each group.

We can think of this, in turn, as 3 groups with 10 ones in each group and 4
groups with 10 tenths in each group.

Since 10 ones is 1 ten and 10 tenths is 1 one, we can think of this as 3 tens 4
ones.

So 3.4×10=34.

What’s New
George Polya, known as the father of modern problem solving. He did
extensive studies and wrote numerous mathematical papers and three books about
problem solving. I'm going to show you his method of problem solving to help you
step through these problems.
Polya created his famous four-step process for problem solving, which is
used all over to aid people in problem solving:
Step 1: Understand the problem.
Step 2: Devise a plan (translate).
Step 3: Carry out the plan (solve).
Step 4: Look back (check and interpret).
https://www.wtamu.edu/academic/anns/mps/math/mathlab/int_algebra/int_alg_tut8_probsol.htm

What Is It

Study the word problem below and solve using Polya’s Four-step
Process for Problem Solving.
Mrs. Nardo spends ₱135.50 for food each day. How much does she spend in
12 days?
Step 1: Understand the problem.
What is asked? The amount Mrs. Nardo spend in 12 days.
What are the given facts? ₱135.50 for food each day, 12 days
What operation to be used? multiplication
Step 2: Devise a plan (translate).
What is the mathematical sentence? 135.50 x 12 = N
Step 3: Carry out the plan (solve).
Show the Solution. 135.50

Step 4: Look back (check and interpret).
Give the complete answer. Mrs. Nardo spends ₱ 1 626.00 in 12 days.
Study the next non-routine problems.

Problem 1: Problem 2:

My mother gave me 50 centavos. My In the farm there are 12 hens and 1.75
father gave me 2.5 times as much. My times more roosters than hens. There
grandmother gave me 3.5 times as are also 2.5 times as much chicks than
much. How much money do I have hens. How many animals are in the
farm?
now?

mother – ₱ 0.50 hens – 12

father – 2.5 x ₱ 0.50 = ₱ 1.25 roosters – 1.75 x 12 = 21
grandmother – 3.5 x ₱ 0.50 = ₱ 1.75 chicks – 2.5 x 12 = 30

* The amount I have now is ₱ 3.50. * There are 63 animals in the farm.

What’s More

Solve.

1. Mother bought 15.75 kilos of flour for making trays of polvoron. If each kilo of flour
costs P45.50, how much did she pay for it?
2. Ms. Miralsa’s farm is 1.5 km long and 0.82 km wide. What is the area of the
farm?
3. It took Mrs. Santiago 2.3 hours to prepare her daily lessons. She consumed
0.45 of this time for preparing her lesson plan. How much time did she spend in
preparing lesson plans?
4. Grace wants to cook leche plan. She bought 100 eggs. What is the cost of
the eggs if each egg costs Php. 5.50?
5. Levi spends 6.25 hours in school everyday. How many hours does he
spend in school in 10 days?
What I Have Learned
In solving routine problems, we can use Polya’s 4-step
process for problem solving: Step 1-Understand the problem.
Step 2- Devise a plan (translate).
Step 3- Carry out the plan (solve).
Step 4- Look back (check and interpret).
In solving non-routine problems, we can use the following strategies:
* Look for a pattern * Work backwards.
* Guess and check * Act it out/make a model.
