In a recent art i c l e , Kenneth L . Pike h as demonstrated the v a l ue o f

using mat ri x theory as " a t o o l for gai ning ins i gh t i n t o morphemic
p at t erns of great comp lexi t y " (19 6 3:1 ) . Morphemes , whi c h in the i n i t i al
analysis were simp ly l isted and memorised as c omplex uni t s , were l ater
shown to have s i gn i fi c an t i nternal pat terni n g . Th is p a t t erning was
graph i c a l ly disp layed in mat ri ces which i n d i c ated the format i ves , the
vec t ors and t he c ategories . The format i ves are ph o n o l o gi c al part i c les

c o l umns in the mat rix (e . g . , c o lumns i n di c at i n g s ingular , dual and
p lu r a l number ) . The c ategories are t he meani ngs of emi c vec t ors . The
formati ve is re levan t to phonology , the ve c t o r to grammar , and the
c ategory t o seman t i c s ; the t o t a l being a fo rm-mean i n g c omposi te .
