ABSTRACT

If you love the smell of coffee, then you might like coffee-scented candles. While you

can always buy a coffee-scented candle from a store, you will get a much nicer (and more

realistic!) scent if you make it your own. Candle-making can look intimidating, but it is

actually quite easy and fun to do. Once you know the basics, you can create all sorts of

variations! using the principles of aromatherapy, scented candles can create the ideal mood and

ambience for your home – or wherever you are! Remember that when thinking of buying a

scented candle, it’s best to make our own flavor of the fragrance that captivates our mood!

Perhaps something to relax you? Or a scent to destress? So we sought this study specially to

those coffee lover. This study scented candles are made of coffee with canela or cinamon stick

—the one that would trade anything for an extra nine minutes of sleep. If waking up to the

sweet scent of espresso sounds like your idea of heaven, consider waking up to a coffee-

scented candle.

Based from the result of the study, we have found out that coffee granules can be used as scent

for candles.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

This chapter presents; (a) Background (b)Statement of the Problem (c) objective of the study

(d)Significance of the study (e) Hyphotheses of the Study (f) scope and delimitation

(g) Definition of terms

Back ground of the Study

Candles were once used merely as a source of light and were simple and plain, without

color or fragrance. They came in standard sizes and shapes. Now candlemaking is an art form

and candles have become decorative works of art that come in an infinite variety of shapes,

sizes, colors & fragrances. They are generally used to create a peaceful, romantic ambiance and

are treasured for their relaxing effect. Candles have recently become a big part of home decor

and this has encouraged the development of new techniques and materials.

Forget about the natural beauty of a candle for a while and let’s talk about how certain

fragrances from candles can affect your well-being. As it turns out, certain scents have the

power to positively impact your mood and do amazing things to both your mind and body! The

Danes have known it for centuries, and they call it Hygge.

Our sense of smell is incredibly powerful and shouldn’t be underestimated. From boosting

energy through to relieving stress or even enhancing mental clarity.

There’s nothing quite like the smell of fresh coffee in the morning. While the idea of waking

up to the aromas of your favorite brew is enchanting, for most people this is more of a dream

logical effects. Our sense of smell is incredibly powerful and shouldn’t be underestimated.

From boosting energy through to relieving stress or even enhancing mental clarity, the

aromatherapy properties coming from a lighted scented candle can deliver psychological

effects.

For example, did you know that rosemary scents produce aromas that can invigorate

and energize? So if you’re stuck with a morning fog, this scent may be your perfect coffee

alternative! On the other hand, research suggests that lemongrass or spearmint scents help

clear sinuses when you’re feeling a bit under the weather – handy, isn’t it? And on days when

you’re feeling blue, light up a candle with jasmine or grapefruit scent and you’ll feel a waft of

joy and positivity.

By understanding the different effects of various scents, you can take control of your

mood and light the candle you need to affect your mood.

This study scented candles are made of coffee with canela or cinamon stick—the one that

would trade anything for an extra nine minutes of sleep. If waking up to the sweet scent of

espresso sounds like your idea of heaven, consider waking up to a coffee-scented candle.

Simply light it up at the first sound of your alarm, hit snooze, and let the rich delicious

fragrance do the rest. We guarantee you'll feel reinvigorated as soon as the second snooze

hits.

Statement of the Problem

a. Can coffee be an alternative scent for candles?

b. Would it be better to use coffee scent instead of other commercially available products?

c. Can coffee be mixed with other aroma like cinnamon, pandan, vanilla and lemon.

Objectives of the Study

a. To know if coffee can be an alternative scent for candles.

b. To know if there will be other uses of coffee aside from drinking it.

Significance of the Study

This study can educate students ,community and coffee lover that they can make their

very own scented candle out of coffee, benefits to people save money for their other needs. It

will also be beneficial especially to people who experienced a hard time waking up in the

morning. With the scent of coffee, they will surely want to get up from bed.. This research will

also serve as reference for the future researchers.

a) Coffee can't be an alternative scent in making scented candles.

b) Coffee can be an alternative scent in making scented candles.

Scope and Delimitation

This study is limited only on the investigation of coffee as an alternative scent for

candles. Coffee granules will be the main ingredient in making these scented candles.

Definition of Terms

Coffee - the shrub of the bedstraw family that yields the coffee seeds, two of which are

contained in each red berry.

Coffe granules – main ingredient of coffee-scented candles.

Wooden spoon skewer – used to stir the wax.

Cinnamon powder - the aromatic, dried bark of any of several tropical trees (genus

Cinnamomum) yielding a culinary spice, oil, and flavoring especially : a small roll or

CHAPTER II

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

Candles used to be largely made up of solid combustible waxes of fatty substance

formed around a wick. It is a source of light. Beeswax candles were used in Egypt and Crete as

early as 3000 B.C. Much later, candles were made by pouring molten wax or tallow into

molds, containing wicks. Next came the paraffin wax, which is crystallized from petroleum.

Today, commercially available candles are approximately made up of 65 percent paraffin wax

and 35 percent stearic acid.

Waxes compromises a broad group of opaque, water repellent, essentially solid

materials having varied chemical composition and many diverse applications. Its name applied

originally to naturally occurring esters of fatty acids and monohydric alcohols but not refers to

both natural and manufactured products resembling these esters. They soften gradually on

heating, going through a soft, malleable state before ultimately forming a liquid.

Oils are greasy, generally combustible liquid of vegetables, animals or mineral origin

which is insoluble in alcohol and always in Ether. Oils are used as food, for lubricating,

illuminating and as fuel. It is also used in the manufacture of soap, candles, cosmetics,

perfumery, etc.

Wick were made up of cotton or linen woven and braided in such a way that it will burn in one

direction, curling so as to texture its end into oxidizing zone of the candles flame for complete

combustion.

CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY AND PROCEDURE

1. Melting the Wax

a.Choose a holder for your candle, clean it, then set it aside. A metal or tin coffee mug will be a nice
touch, but you can use other items too, such as tin cans, mason jars, or glass candle votives. Once you
have chosen your candle holder, wash it with soap and water, then dry it off with a towel.Don't add
the wick just yet. You will need to use your candle holder to measure out the wax.

b. Set up a double-boiler for candle-making. Set a metal can or a heat-safe, glass measuring cup into a
pot. Fill the pot with a few inches/centimeters of water. The exact amount does not matter, as long as
the water reaches part-way up the side of the can and does not touch the rim.[2]

Do not use your candle holder for this step, even if it is a tin can.

You can also use a metal beaker made specifically for melting candle wax; you can find it in the candle-
making section of a craft store.

C.Clip a candy-making thermometer to the side of the can. Candy-making thermometers have a metal
band with a clip attached to it. Slide the clip over the rim of the can so that the thermometer is on the
inside. Move the thermometer up or down through the metal band so that the tip is not touching the
bottom of the can.

Some craft stores sell similar thermometers for candle-making. You can use these thermometers
instead.

d.Pour soy wax flakes into the can. Use your candle holder to measure out the wax . You will need
enough wax flakes to fill your candle holder 1.5 times. Don't worry if this seems like too much; the wax
flakes will condense when they melt and take up less space.[3]

You can use other types of wax, if you prefer, but soy wax is the easiest to work with.

e.Melt the wax over medium-high heat. Bring the water to a boil over medium-high heat and wait for
the wax to melt. In most cases, it will turn clear or translucent.[4] Depending on the type of wax you
are using, this can take 10 to 15 minutes. Do not let the wax get hotter than 200 °F (93 °C), or it may
catch on fire.[5] Also, do not leave the wax unattended during this step.

If you are using a different type of wax, check the label on the packaging for the flash point. If you
can't find it, research it online.

2. Adding Fragrance and Color

A .Add 1 tbsp (5 g) of ground coffee per 12 oz (340.2 g) of wax flakes. You can use any type of
coffee, but freshly-ground coffee may give you the best fragrance.[6] If you don't want to use
real coffee, stir in some coffee-scented, candle-making fragrance oil instead. You will need 1.5
ounces (44.4 mL) of oil for every 1 pound (453.6 g) of candle wax.[7]

If you decide to use the fragrance oil, read the label to check the flash point. Let the coffee
cool to the right temperature, if needed.

b. Stir and cook the wax for 2 to 3 more minutes. This will give the coffee time to infuse the

wax with its fragrance and color. Watch the temperature on the thermometer during this time.

Do not let it get higher than 200 °F (93 °C), or whatever the flash point for your wax is.[8]

Use a wooden spoon skewer, or craft stick to stir the wax.

College of Business Education Science and Technology, Inc.
Burgos St. District 2, Cauayan City, Isabela

Skip this step if you are using a coffee-scented fragrance oil instead. The oil does not need to

infuse the wax.

c. Deepen the color with brown candle-making dye, if desired. Get a block of brown candle-

making dye. Use a knife to shave off a thin sliver from the edge of the block, then add it into

the wax. Stir the wax with a wooden spoon, skewer, or craft stick until the color is consistent.

Add more slivers of dye as needed until you get the color you want.

Don't use clothing dye, paint, or soap-making dye.

Don't use the entire block. A tiny amount of candle-making dye goes a long way.

3.Pouring and Cooling the Wax

Wait for the wax to cool to 100 °F (38 °C). Keep your thermometer clipped to the side of the

can, and watch the temperature as it falls. You will need to move quickly once the wax cools to

100 °F (38 °C). It would be a good idea to prepare the candle holder while you wait for the

wax to cool.[9]

a. Insert a tabbed wick into your candle holder. Choose a wick that is taller than your candle

holder. Place a piece of double-sided tape or a drop of super glue on the bottom of the tab.

Tuck the wick into your candle holder and press the tab against the bottom.

A tabbed wick is a pre-cut candle wick with a metal disk attached to the bottom. You can find

it in the candle-making section of a craft store.

For a rustic touch, super-glue a natural/wooden wick into the candle holder instead.[10]

b. Wrap the wick around a pencil placed across the candle holder. Wrap the end of your wick

around a pencil. Keep wrapping the wick until the pencil touches the rim of your candle holder.

[11] If your wick is too short for this, you can prop it up between 2 pencils instead. Use tape to

hold the pencils together.

If you don't have a pencil, use a pen, stick, or marker.

c. Pour three-quarters of the wax into the candle holder. Save the remaining quarter for later.

This way, you can use the leftover wax to fill in any wells or craters that may form in your

candle.[12]

If you don't want the coffee grounds in the finished candle, pour the wax through a mesh

strainer, then clean the strainer immediately.

College of Business Education Science and Technology, Inc.
Burgos St. District 2, Cauayan City, Isabela

You can pour all of the wax if you are in a hurry or if you don't care about wells forming in the

center.

d. Let the wax cool completely at room-temperature. This can take anywhere from a couple of

hours to a full day. It all depends on the type of wax you used to make your candle, how big

your candle is, and how warm or cool it is in your kitchen.

The remaining quarter of wax will also cool, which is fine. You will re-melt later.

4. Finishing the Candle

Allow the wax to harden again. This should not take as long as the first time because you are

using a smaller amount of wax. Use your fingernail to scrape off any wax that got on the

outside of your candle holder at this time.[15]

a. rim the wick to 1⁄8 inch (0.32 cm). This will prevent the flame from climbing too high. It

will also reduce the amount of smoke. Once you trim the candle, you can light it.[16] Keep the

candle on a heat-safe surface while it burns, and never leave it unattended. Trim the wick to 1⁄8

inch (0.32 cm) each time that you use the candle.

CHAPTER IV

Results and Discussion

In this chapter, it tries to discuss the observation noted on the experiment and the

characteristics of the scented candles made from coffee.

With the mixture of other aroma, the scent of coffee overpowered the other scents. The

addition of other aroma just added a sweet flavor of the coffee candle and it ca refresh and

activate your mind especially if you are a coffee lover.

Summary, Conclusions and Recommendations

The techniques used in candle making are relatively simple however the art of

candle making cannot be mastered simply by reading about the techniques. Only a

process of trial and error and good note taking can make you an expert on the subject of

candles. The materials you use will determine the quality of your candles but each candle

will require a different combination of materials and techniques. Good note taking will

allow you to determine what works and what doesn't and when you perfect your candle,

you will be able to reproduce it. Whatever doesn't work, can be melted down again and

re-used. Candle scraps and pieces of shaved wax can all be kept and recycled so nothing

goes to waste. Candles were meant to be burned so no matter how beautiful your candle

comes out, remember it isn't done until it burns well so keep working at it until you get a

good smokeless, even burning candle.

Based from the result of the study, we have found out that coffee powder can be

used as scent for candles with the mixture of cinnamon, vanilla, lemon, and pandan. We

therefore recommend it for household use and also for hotels and accommodations

especially for those students while studying. For the future researchers, we recommend

them to experiment and use other natural scents.
