APPL113 – Research in Daily Life II

ACTIVITY AND ASSIGNMENTS: The Characteristics, Strengths, Weaknesses, and Kinds of Quantitative
Research
Week 2 (August 17-18, 2020)
1st Semester, SY 2020-2021

Activity 3: Nature of Variables

Name: John Lesther Ellano Pabilonia Course Code: APPL 113

Section: SC2C Date Performed: August 23, 2020

“Alcoholic beverage is any fermented liquor, such as wine, beer, or distilled spirit that contains
ethyl alcohol or ethanol (CH3CH2OH) as an intoxicating agent (MarcoSampaolo, 2013). The
study is about the effect of alcohol on the heart rate of Daphnia. Samples of the organism were
directly exposed to an aqueous environment with varying concentration of alcohol. The
experiment used three different alcoholic beverages at three different concentrations in water.”

1. Which of the following is considered as the dependent variable in the study?

A. type of liquor C. concentration of alcohol
B. heart rate of Daphnia D. time of observation

2. The concentration of alcohol and the heart rate of Daphnia can be categorized in which types
of variables?
A. discrete and categorical C. dependent and discrete
B. continuous and independent D. confounding and irrelevant

3. Tony and Cecil conducted a study titled “Growth comparison of tomato plant cultivated with
liquid fish amino acid (FAA) and Plantmate organic fertilizer.” They performed the experiment in
an open field. Which of the following could be an extraneous variable in the study?
A. height of tomato C. amount of sunlight
B. amount of fertilizer D. variety of tomato

4. Why is it important to identify and distinguish the variable.s of a study before proceeding to
data collection?
A. Because variables show the relationship that exists in a study set-up.
B. Because variables set the objective of the study.
C. Because the types of variables enable the researcher to decide on the appropriate
research design to use.
D. Because the variables of a study can be expressed differently.

5. By considering the research variables, how does a researcher avoid bias in conducting an
experimental research?
A. The independent variables must be constant all throughout the experiment.
B. The intervening variables must be identified and let affect the dependent variable.
C. The dependent variables must be expressed in similar terms or units that of the
independent variable.
D. All of the above.

Differentiate Dependent and Independent Variable

Dependent Variable Independent Variable
Cause Effect
Manipulated Responding/Observed/Measured
Can be easily manipulate Difficult to manipulate
Example: Numbers of kernels popped Example: Brand of popcorn bag
