Batchelder Award
This award honors
Mildred L. Batchelder, a
former executive director
of the Association for
Library Service to
Children, a believer in the
importance of good books
for children in translation
from all parts of the First awarded 1968
world.
 This award is a citation awarded to a United
States publisher for a children’s book
considered to be the most outstanding of those
books originating in a country other than the
United States and in a language other than
English and subsequently translated into English
for publication in the United States during the
preceding year.
 The award is given to encourage US publishers
to seek out superior children's books abroad and
to promote communication among the peoples
of the world.
Pura Belpré Award
The Pura Belpré Award is a
recognition presented to a
Latino or Latina writer
and illustrator whose work
best portrays the Latino
cultural experience in a
work of literature for
children or youth.

Geisel Award
Annually recognizes the

"author(s) and illustrator(s)
of the most distinguished
book for beginning readers.
First awarded 2006
The Theodor Seuss Geisel Award is given annually
to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most
distinguished American book for beginning
readers published in English in the United States
during the preceding year. The winner(s), recognized
for their literary and artistic achievements that
demonstrate creativity and imagination to engage
children in reading, receives a bronze medal. Honor
Book authors and illustrators receive certificates,
which are presented at the ALA Annual
Conference. The award was established in 2004 and
first presented in 2006.
The award is named for the world-renowned
children’s author, Theodor Geisel. "A person’s a person
no matter how small," Theodor Geisel, a.k.a. Dr. Seuss,
would say. "Children want the same things we want: to
laugh, to be challenged, to be entertained and
delighted." Brilliant, playful, and always respectful of
children, Dr. Seuss charmed his way into the
consciousness of four generations of youngsters and
parents. In the process, he helped them to read.

Children recognizes books which
demonstrate excellence in the
"writing of nonfiction for
children."

Awarded to "the most

distinguished American picture
book for children“.

medal is named, as an English artist
and illustrator.
"Caldecott's work heralds the

beginning of the modern picture

Newberry Medal
Awarded for "The most

distinguished contribution to
American literature for children”.
First awarded 1922
John Newbery
 called "The Father of Children's Literature“
 an English publisher of books who first made
children's literature a sustainable and
profitable part of the literary market.
 In recognition of his achievements the Newbery
Medal was named after him in 1922.
 The Newbery and the Caldecott Medal are

considered the two most prestigious awards for
children's literature in the United States.
Silbert Medal
Awarded annually to the

author(s) and illustrator(s)
of the most distinguished
informational book
published in the United
States in English during the
preceding year.

Margaret A. Edwards Award
Awarded for "significant and

lasting contribution to
young adult literature”.

Alex Award
Awarded for Adults books

with "special appeal" for
adolescents.

Michael L. Printz Award
Awarded for the year's "best

book written for teens, based
entirely on its literary merit”.

Michael L. Printz
The award's namesake was a school
librarian in Topeka, Kansas, and a
marketing consultant for Econo-Clad,
as well an active member of YALSA.
He had a passion for books and
reading. He also appreciated the
authors who wrote books for young
adults and demonstrated this by
initiating an author-in-residence
program at his high school.
Coretta Scott King Award
Awarded for (Book Awards) the

most distinguished portrayal of
African American experience
in literature for children or
teens.
First awarded 1970
Stonewall Book Award
Awarded for "exceptional

merit relating to the
gay/lesbian/bisexual/transge
nder experience”.
First awarded 1971
Odyssey Award
Awarded for the year's best

English-language audiobook for
children or young adults.
First awarded 2008
