Indian government launches National AI Portal

The Indian government has launched the National
Artificial Intelligence (AI) Portal, developed jointly by
the National e-Governance Division of the Ministry of
Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the
National Association of Software and Service Companies
(NASSCOM).
The portal, www.ai.gov.in, was launched by Ravi
Shankar Prasad, the Union Minister for Electronics and
IT, Law and Justice and Communications on the occasion
of the first anniversary of the second tenure of the Prime
Minister Narendra Modi-led government.
The government hopes the portal will work as a one-
stop digital platform for all AI-related advancements in
India, with sharing of useful resources like articles, as Representational image

well as investment/funding news for AI startups, AI companies and AI educational firms in India. Besides, the
portal will also carry documents, case studies, research reports, etc. It will provide opportunities for learning and
new jobs related to AI.
The portal brings together ideas and thought leadership from Indian government stakeholders including MeitY,
NITI Aayog, NASSCOM, as well as the state governments.

Will foreign electronics firms shift

their manufacturing plants to
India post COVID-19?
The microscopic coronavirus has upset businesses and lives across the globe. China, where the
virus is said to have originated, is today being looked down upon as a manufacturing hub and
its reliability is under a deep cloud. India must get its act together quickly, and project itself as
the best alternative to countries pulling manufacturing activities out of China. Complacency
could help other countries in the region, like Vietnam and Thailand, move ahead swiftly.

Lack of a strategy is hampering local

production of electronic components
The Indian electronics industry is highly dependent on China and other Asian countries
for the components it needs, the import of which accounts for approximately 80 per cent
of the finished product. The manufacture of these components in India is still at a nascent
stage, and that must change soon, say the experts. There are a number of schemes the
government has introduced in an effort to boost local manufacture, but these are taking
time to bear fruit as the industry faces quite a few challenges still.

Power grid collaboratives enable

new levels of power utilisation
The essence of collaborative networking is that smart homes communicate with each other to
create a community, as opposed to each smart home communicating independently with the
public utility. Solar aggregators and other suppliers of local power manage the community’s
energy resources. This scenario opens up a wide range of design opportunities in electronics.

The Indian electronics industry is facing unique challenges. Local manufacturing is limited

How the COVICIDE Cabinet

helps to prevent the spread of
coronavirus at home and at work
Genisup India Private limited, a Hosur based startup, has created a UV-C germicidal lamp-based
sterilisation cabinet that can safely disinfect personal items or belongings, addressing the need to
stay safe during the current COVID-19 crisis.

By Potshangbam July

T
he Covid-19 pandemic has
paralysed the daily lives of
people and the operations of
businesses in every nook and corner
of the world. As the virus continues
to spread unabated, there are huge
challenges in getting back to work.
Apart from direct human-to-human
transmission, an infected person can
contaminate the surfaces or everyday
objects like newspapers, packages,
groceries, etc, by sneezing, cough-
ing or touching them. And this virus
survives for a long time—from a few
hours to many days on surfaces like
doorknobs and countertops. Again,
how long the virus survives depends
on the material used on the surfaces.
According to a recent study pub-
lished in the New England Journal
of Medicine, SARS-CoV-2, the virus
that causes COVID-19, can live in the
air and on surfaces between several
hours and several days. The study
found that the virus remains potent
for up to 72 hours on plastics, 48
hours on stainless steel, 24 hours on
cardboard, and four hours on cop-

three hours.

A
pick-and-place machine is used for the second step in a paste, place and reflow assembly operation.
The ‘place’ function follows the ‘solder paste’ function (stencil printer). The ‘place’ operation selects

SMT Focus

Model: Suffix (SM series); Manufacturer: Hanwha

The basic common feature among products in the SM

series is that they provide convenient in-line operation
through the integration of the main modules with the
inline platforms. In this series, Hanwha’s own inbuilt
on-the-fly image technology is used, allowing component
recognition without stopping, and while moving
after component pickup. The placement speed is also
maximised by minimising the moving time between the
pickup position and reducing the component recognition
time to zero.

Key features:
• The SM 481 comes with options for stage vision;
so it can be used in chip shooter applications
(without stage vision) as well as for multi-mounter
applications (with stage vision). • It is preferred by most small-/mid-sized organisations
• The machine has factory options to support conveyor as a standalone machine and by larger organisations
sizes up to 1500mm. The SM 482+ also supports as part of a combination of two or three machines,

latest operating system software and user interface
to boost productivity. The flexible iineo+ is ideal
for contract manufacturers who need to work with
low- and medium-sized batches and hold a wide
stock of components for different customer jobs.
The iineo+ lets them keep up to 264 x 8mm reels
on the machine to reduce changeover times between
jobs. Enhancements new to the iineo+ include
integrated on-the-fly electrical component testing, a
new RC5.16 operating system that boosts on-machine
vision analysis and streamlines networked machine
communication, and an intuitive graphical touchscreen
operator interface.

Key features: • Integral calibrated electrical bridge component tester

• On-machine inventory capacity of 264 x 8mm • Europlacer intelligent feeder technology

The impact of the coronavirus

on the LED industry
The widespread shift to working from home has opened up vast
opportunities to tap the home market for ergonomic LED lighting.
Similarly, the current need to continuously disinfect surfaces offers LED
anti-bacterial bulb makers a bigger market. This sector is, therefore, well
placed to adapt and thrive even during a pandemic.

LED luminaires
Signify has launched NatureConnect, its new lighting range
that’s based on the concept of human-centric lighting.
NatureConnect is built on proven biophilic design principles.
The lighting is designed to benefit the body and mind, and
in turn, lead to increased productivity, engagement and
workplace satisfaction.
NatureConnect combines various LED luminaires, called
Daylight, Skylight and Lightscape, with intuitive controls to
create lighting scenes tailored to people’s needs, based on
proven and valued natural experiences. Daylight mimics the
cycle of the sun to make people more energetic during the
day and sleep well at night. Skylight creates the perception
of space beyond the walls to provide a view to the sky. Finally, Lightscape provides natural colours to
stimulate positive emotions as well as support people to actively work together.
