BC Housing, the City and the Nico-
la Valley Shelter and Support Society
(NVSSS) have partnered to open a tem-
porary capacity expansion shelter on the
premises of the Merritt Desert Inn, 2350
Voght St. This site will replace the exist-
ing Shelter next to 7-11, and provide ap-
prox. 20 rooms with physical distancing
for those who are experiencing home-
lessness. There will also be a drop-in
hygiene centre on site, offering people a
space to shower during the day.
The shelter will be separate from the
attached businesses and have its own
entrance. It will be staffed 24/7. These
Health and are accessible by referral only.
Capacity expansion shelters are a tem-
porary reassignment of existing buildings
– much like extreme weather shelters – to
provide a safe, supportive space and ac-
cess to hygiene facilities. The current site
has been in operation since 2011 and de-
mand has been increasing. With the phys-
ical distancing required by COVID-19, its
capacity has been reduced.
The relocation of this shelter will add
more spaces for local people living on
the streets and in shelters to stay indoors,
practice physical distancing and help
slow the spread of COVID-19.
