The Noun

A NOUN IS A NAMING WORD. IT CAN BE THE NAME OF A THING, PLACE, PERSON, ANIMAL OR
FEELING.

It could be a name of any person, for example: John, Fatima, Singh, Michael, Tom

It could be a name of any place, for example: America, China, Church, Taj Mahal, Paris

Naming things are like Car, Hat, Bottle, Table, Chair, Ball

Name of animals like Dog, Rabbit, Elephant, Chicken, Horse.

Naming Feeling/Qualities/Ideas

Joy, Fear, Beauty, Strength, Anger.

Kinds of Noun
1. Common Noun: A common noun is a noun referring to a person, place,

or thing in a general sense. Common here means ‘shared by all.’

a. The boys are studying grammar.

b. The nearest town is 60 miles away.

c. She is a good girl.

2. Proper Noun: A proper noun represents the name of a specific person,

place, or thing. Proper nouns are always written with a capital letter at the

beginning.

a.Jawaharlal Nehru was the first prime minister of India.

b. India is a democratic country.

c Hari is a good boy. .

3.Collective Noun

Collective nouns are used to name a group of persons, places, animals or things. A collective noun
represents a complete whole.

. a heap of rubbish, a hedge of bushes, a library of books, .an outfit of clothes, .an orchard of fruit
trees, a pack of cards. a packet of letters. a pair of shoes., a quiver of, ,a range of mountains

4. Abstract noun: An abstract noun is a noun which names quality, action,

virtue or state, which one cannot perceive through one’s five physical senses.

a. We all love honesty.

b. Cleanliness is next to godliness.


c. I love to remember the happy days of childhood.

5. Material noun

The material noun is a noun which can be measured or weighted but cannot be counted.

The material noun is a substance, an ingredient, or a material that we can touch and see and it is
used to make other things as well.

Material nouns are names of material out of which, things are made.

Examples: gold, water, iron, rice, etc. now these things cannot be counted but are measured. Also,
we make jewellery out of gold and pots from iron.

2. We do not use any articles (a, an, and the) with them
