What is (Academic) Research?

• Systematic investigation into a problem or a situation.


• Undertaken to identify facts and/or opinions, to solve those
“problems”.
• “A detailed study of a subject, especially in order to
discover (new) information or reach a (new)
understanding” (Cambridge English Dictionary).
Purpose of Academic Research

• To seek truth.
• To seek new knowledge.
• Making a rigorous and relevant contribution to the existing
body of knowledge.
• Academic and professional growth.
Language of Research

• Use “Academic Writing” style.


• “Research” has its own language, style, expression and
jargon.
• Do not use informal vocabulary or expressions.
• Create your own list of research specific phrases, terms,
and connectors.

What is a Research Proposal?

• “A concise and coherent summary of your proposed


research”.

• An outline of the general area of your research interest.


Purpose/ Significance of Research Proposal

• To present and justify the need to study a research problem.


• To present practical ways in which the proposed study
should be conducted.
• Refers to the current state of “knowledge” in your field.
• Explores the recent debates on the topic of research.
• Determines the originality of your proposed research.
• Provides you with an opportunity to demonstrate your
ability of undertaking a research project.
• A good research proposal ensures the acceptance of a
research grant/ postgraduate admission.

• Opportunity to demonstrate that you have the ability to


convey/ deliver complex ideas concisely and critically.

• To demonstrate that you have adequate expertise and


experience to undertake the project.

• Helps you match your area of interest with the appropriate


and relevant supervisor.
