What do you think are some problems that you and/or your classmates encounter
when you write academic papers?

*In 21st century where it revolves with a rapid growth of technology academic writing
may come in different forms of medium and media. It may be hard for others to write
academic papers because they do not have enough gadgets to do so. Some may not
know the basic way on how to academic papers. As for me and my partner, it is hard to
write academic papers because we sometimes lack ideas and have trouble in focusing
in our tasks.

2. What language do they use at home? Is it English or Filipino or any other language
(Chinese, Cebuano,Bikolano,etc.)?

* As for me and my partner, we use Filipino language at our house but sometimes use
English from time to time.

3. Do you think they find it difficult to express their ideas in English if they don't speak
the English language at home? How does this affect their language and style?

*Yes, they find it difficult. Why? Some of the foreigners may critsize our language and
style of speaking English. And many Filipinos won't have courage to speak English in
their own way. For me speaking English while not using it in your own home will be a
burdensome of your Ideas in English.

4. Can you identify some words that are direct translation from Filipino which may affect
the meaning of sentences? For example, saying "result to" instead of "result in" or
saying "open the lights" instead of "turn on the lights".

* As for me and my partner we can sometimes identify that a sentence is not well
structured or using the more common form of English. A word can be overloaded with a
number of synonyms. A translator’s choice of words can sometimes be picked out.

-Placing 'yet' in the middle of the sentence when the meaning is 'until now' or 'so far'.

-Placing 'already' at the end of the sentence when the meaning is 'before now' or 'so
early'.

-Placing 'only' at the end of the sentence when the meaning is 'alone' or 'existing with no
others of the same kind'.

-Interchanging 'Whom' and 'Who'.

-Following through with the previous explanation, a related grammar mistake is

answering questions like 'May I speak with (any person's name)' with 'This is him/her'.

-Answering questions which start with 'Do' or 'Does' with '(noun/pronoun) has/have'.
-Misusing 'between' and 'among'.

-Misuse and/or confusion among 'agree with', 'agree on', and 'agree to'.

-Giving a positive response when asked questions which start with 'Do you mind...?"
when the reply is actually negative.

-Making the word that follows the phrase 'One of the...' singular.
