clearer view of the current issues.

Activity 3 Language Connections

Read and understand the following sentences.

 A documentary provides objective knowledge that shows us the rapidly

changing climate.
 An successful news flash is written with very specific information of
some events that may affect us
 Learning weather reports are helpful in determining future events.
Process Questions:

1. What do you notice about the underlined words?

2. In you previous English lessons way back, can you remember what are the
underlined words called?

3. How about the words that are on bold and italic letters, what do you notice
about them?

4. Which of them are singular? And those who are plural?

5. What do you remember about the selected words as the subject and verbs in
the sentence?

The subject of a sentence is the person, place, thing, or idea that is doing or being
something. You can find the subject of a sentence if you can find the verb. Ask the question,
"Who or what 'verbs point to'?" and the answer to that question is the subject.

The underlined words above are the subject of their sentence. The words documentary,
news flash, and weather report are the subjects while the words with bold and italic letters are
the verbs.

Verbs are the action words in a sentence that describe what the subject is doing. Along
with nouns, verbs are the main part of a sentence or phrase, telling a story about what is taking
place. In fact, without a verb, full thoughts can’t be properly conveyed, and even the simplest
sentences, such as Maria sings, have one. Actually, a verb can be a sentence by itself, with the
subject, in most case you, implied, such as, Sing! and Drive!

Basic Rule on Subject – Verb Agreement

 Subject and verbs must match in number

-A singular subject must only have a singular verb and vice-versa.
