ABOUT ENID BLYTON

‘I want to know you from the very

beginning, and go with you all through
your childhood till you are old enough to
read adult books. I don’t want you to be
friends with me at one age only, I want to
keep in touch with you all through your
childhood days’

Enid Blyton was born in Dulwich, in South-East London, in 1897. When she left school, she
trained as and became a teacher. She continued to teach for five years until she married and had
children. Enid Blyton had two daughters, Gillian and Imogen, with her first husband, whose
name was Hugh Pollock.

From a very early age Enid Blyton enjoyed making up stories. She said that she liked making
up stories better than she liked doing anything else. She published her first book in 1922. It was
called Child Whispers and it was a collection of poetry. She went on to write more than 800
stories and poems.

A number of illustrators worked on Enid’s stories, perhaps most famously Eileen Soper, who
illustrated The Famous Five. But Enid always carefully checked and approved the pictures in her
books

Enid Blyton died in 1968 but remains a publishing phenomenon – the greatest children’s writer
of the 20th century. She has become one of the best-known and best-loved writers of children’s
stories and many of us fondly remember reading her books as children. She is consistently voted
a children’s favourite in author polls and even the RAF’s Red Arrows perform the Enid display
sequence as homage to her and The Famous Five!
ADVENTURE

THE FAMOUS FIVE

The Famous Five are among Enid Blyton’s best-loved creations and countless children have gone
adventuring with them since the publication of Five on a Treasure Island in 1942, the first of
twenty-one full-length adventures and numerous short stories.

Armed with maps, torches, packets of sandwiches and a plentiful supply of ginger-beer, Julian,
Dick, Anne, their tomboy cousin George (Georgina by rights) and Timmy the dog like nothing
better than to spend their holidays hiking and biking, camping and exploring by themselves,
invariably falling into adventure.

Both classic and revised (sensitively updated to bring them into the 21st century) texts available.

MYSTERY SERIES

The Five Find-Outers and Dog are Fatty, Larry, Daisy, Pip, Bets and Fatty’s Scottie dog, Buster.
Fatty’s real name is Frederick Algernon Trotteville and, unfortunately for him, his initials fit him
to a tee. The children investigate crimes in and around the riverside village of Peterswood, much
to the annoyance of the village policeman, blustering buffoon Mr. Goon.

The first title in the series, The Mystery of the Burnt Cottage, was published in 1943. There are
15 original books in the Five Find-Outers and Dog Mystery Series by Enid Blyton, written
between 1943 and 1961.

SECRET SERIES

The Secret Island, published in 1938, is not only the first book in the Secret series but has the
distinction of being Enid Blyton’s first full-length adventure novel.

The Secret Island is unusual in that the children do not come up against a gang of criminals.
Rather, the story is a surprisingly poignant tale of survival and community, with echoes of
Robinson Crusoe.

There are 5 original “Secret” books by Enid Blyton written between 1938 and 1953.

FAMILY ADVENTURES

In Enid Blyton’s own words “Are you a child? Or are you a grown-up? It doesn’t much matter,
with these books. They are written for the whole family, and for anyone who has to do with
children. They are written, as all stories are written, to entertain the reader — but they are written
too to explain some of the wrong things there are in the world, and to help to put them right.”

Each of the Family Adventures focuses on a different family, with different social circumstances
and issues.

The Family at Red-Roofs was first published in 1945 and the other stories were published
through the 1950s.

AMELIA JANE

Amelia Jane is a big, long-legged doll with a bright red frock, and long black curls. The fact that
she had been made at home rather than bought from a shop is her excuse for having no manners
at all. In these hilarious stories, the terror of the toy cupboard, the rag doll Amelia Jane, has all
sorts of exciting adventures. One thing’s for sure - not many of the other toys get the better of
Amelia Jane! These delightful stories have entertained generations of children, and are still just as
popular today.

The first Amelia Jane book was published in 1939 and the last in the 1960s.

MALORY TOWERS

Malory Towers is a girls’ boarding school located in picturesque surroundings by the sea in
Cornwall. Heroine Darrell Rivers (named after Kenneth Darrell Waters, Enid Blyton’s second
husband) arrives at Malory Towers at the age of twelve, excited and eager. However, things do not
go as smoothly as she had envisaged.

There are six original Malory Towers books the first published in 1946.

SCHOOL DAYS

ST CLARE’S

St. Clare’s, a girls’ boarding school which predates Malory Towers. Tricks and jokes, midnight
feasts, sports matches, thrilling rescues, fun and friendship are all a part of life at the school —
but so are hard work, exams, problems, hot tempers, malice and snobbery. Certainly there’s never
a dull moment at St. Clare’s!

The first St. Clare’s book was published in 1941 and the series of six books remains popular today.
The series is unusual in that the first three titles all revolve around life in the first form while the
other three focus on the second, fourth and fifth forms respectively. In 2000, Pamela Cox wrote
two more St. Clare’s books to “fill in” the gaps in the series. In 2008 she wrote another, Kitty at St.
Clare’s. A further 28 extensions published in Germany are available.
