A review about a research article entitled:

What motivates the masses: Understanding why people contribute to conservation citizen
science projects

“We all have different inspirations, but one goal: A better world” – Ernesto Arguello
The moment I read the title of the research article, I remember this quotation from
Mr. Arguello. As this research sought to find the motivation behind why people contribute to
conservation citizen science projects, I realized that even they have different driving forces that
motivates and inspires them to act, at least I can conclude that these people have the same
common goal, and it is to have a better world.

According to the facts of the article, in order for them to come up with the result, a total
of 723 GWH data contributors were invited to complete the questionnaire and the overall
response rate was 54.6%. This equated to 69.7% and 46.5% for the Systematic and
Opportunistic cohorts respectively. For both Systematic and Opportunistic contributors Values
was identified as the most important motivation and followed closely by the desire to develop
their Understanding while Career was the least important motivation. Unfortunately, Social and
Protective were not seen as important motivators to contributors. Having these results, I might
say that I admire most of the respondents for being motivated by the values they possessed in
their selves. Nowadays it is very hard to live in a world where in good values are being forgotten
by every human being. As time goes by, I observed that we are getting worse than ever that is
why this results really made me glad. Also, I am astounded for seeing Understanding as the
second motivator on why people contribute to conservation citizen science projects. According
to the result, wanting to ‘learn why the disease had occurred’ mapped onto Understanding.
With this, I can say that wanting to understand why the disease had occurred proves that the
respondents who are motivated by this really cared with their own health or even with their
love one’s health. It is good to know that there are people who are driven by understanding
because of personal reasons. Likewise, having a motivation of career is still good. At least there
are people who are assuring the world that they are there to continuously work with the
conservation citizen science projects. I guess these Top 3 motivators are perfect to be lead in
one common goal.

If the same study will be conducted in the Philippines, I think Career will get the highest
percentage as a motivation of the Filipinos because we all know that one of the biggest
problem here in the Philippines is the increasing number of unemployment rate. So I guess
Filipinos will take this as an opportunity. Followed by Protective because we also know that it is
our culture to be protective to ourselves and to our love ones, it is natural to the Filipinos.
Lastly, I observed that Filipinos are socially inclined and that leads me to the third motivation,
the Social. I just came up with these results base on how I observe Filipinos nowadays but of

course I would like to still know the true result if the same study will be conducted in our
country.
