FOREST INFORMATION UPDATE VOL. 12 NO.

1
January 2011
Welcome to this edition of Forest Information Update. Floods in Brazil, Australia and
South Africa have captured attention at the start of the new year. A number of news
items and article links in this edition of FIU reflect the working being done on trying to
better understand such events. Among these is a link to a presentation by Julia Slingo,
Chief Scientist at the UK Met entitled Society's Growing Vulnerability to Natural Hazards
and Implications for Geophysics Research. See more in the Video section below.

Kind regards, Mike Smith, Editor and Director info@forestinformationupdate.com

INTRODUCTION
Forest Information Update (FIU) is a free monthly email newsletter sent to people
interested in the inventory and monitoring of natural resources and reaches about
22,000 natural resource specialists and other recipients worldwide. FIU is produced by

FEEDBACK

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE – “Pay it forward!” If you can help with any of the requests
below, please take the time to do so. Your kind assistance will be appreciated and
rewarded.

NEW FORESTRY GIS BOOK NEEDS YOUR INPUT

Peter Eredics, Forestry Manager, Esri writes: Based on the overwhelming success of
the 2010 publication ‘Mapping Forestry’, Esri is planning another exciting forestry GIS
book project.
We would like to have your input so that you, the user community, can drive the content
of this new book. We hope that you can take a few minutes of your time to quickly write
down a few ideas that will help us to meet your needs.

Some examples of feedback we would like to receive:

1) What kind of forestry GIS book will directly benefit you?
2) What forestry topics most interest you?
3) Is there a particular GIS technology that needs to be explored?
4) What do we need to do differently in this book?
5) ...and any other thoughts/suggestions you might have.

We value your opinion and look forward to hearing your ideas! Contact Peter Eredics at:

. HELP FSC DISCOVER SUSTAINABLE URBAN FOREST PRODUCTS - According

to the U.S. Forest Service, the wood "waste" generated annually in this country could
produce up to 3.8 billion board feet of lumber, satisfying a quarter of our nation's
hardwood lumber needs. Unfortunately, this type of innovative and sustainable use is
not yet recognized by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). FSC is currently inviting
comments on its policy regarding sourcing of reclaimed materials. For more info,
