GRADE 10 WORKSHEET ON SPECIFIC HEAT CAPACITY

1.Fig. 1.1 shows apparatus that a student uses to make an estimate of the specific heat capacity of
iron.
2.Fig. 2.1 shows apparatus which may be used to find the specific heat capacity of a liquid

The readings taken are:

power of the heater, 60 W
time heater is switched on, 500 s
initial temperature of the liquid, 30 °C
final temperature of the liquid, 85 °C
mass of the liquid heated, 300 g
3. (a) State what is meant by specific heat capacity.

(c) Fig. 3.1 illustrates an experiment to measure the specific heat capacity of some metal.

The piece of metal is heated in boiling water until it has reached the temperature of the
water. It is then transferred rapidly to some water in a well-insulated cup. A very sensitive
thermometer is used to measure the initial and final temperatures of the water in the cup.
specific heat capacity of water = 4200 J / (kg K)
The readings from the experiment are as follows.
mass of metal = 0.055 kg
mass of water in cup = 0.215 kg
initial temperature of water in cup = 20.1 °C final temperature of water in cup = 21.9 °C
