This Week’s Speaker
Speaker: Mark Allen His blood tests originally came but clean but said those
results shouldn’t solely be relied on.
Surviving Golf and Cancer
“Don’t rely on the blood test if you have a history of can-
cer,” he said.
“I was in disbelief because I was feeling so good. To this
day I don’t feel sick.
“When they told me it had migrated to my lungs, then it
was game on.
“We have got some good doctors and chemotherapy
drugs are really good these days.
“I was lucky I reacted really well to it.”
The clear lesson from Mark’s story is to never delay medi-
cal assessment if you have any inkling of a problem.

er. His career started out promisingly. However, a few
years after starting he started to tinker with his swing and
his early good form deserted him, never to return. He
struggled on for a total of about 14 years but by then was
in debt and could see little prospect of changing things.
Having decided to retire his last round was as at the Open
in the UK. Paradoxically, with all the pressure of he had
the best result in years.
Also, as luck would have it he was asked to provide com-
mentary on the tournament to a radio station in Mel-
bourne. This was the start of a new career which has
lasted for two decades.

Then Mark talked about his cancer fight his five month
battle with stage four bowel cancer.
Diagnosed in December2018 , the former golfer and radio
host urged others to get checked. He was scheduled for
a colonoscopy in late January 2019 but a lucky meeting
with a cancer specialist at the golf course resulted in a
checkup within days. If he had waited he may not have
survived as the cancers in his rectum and lungs were so
advanced.
“The warning sign unfortunately was way too late, they
suspect I’ve had a tumour in my rectum for three and half
years.
“You can’t just hide and hope.”
