What Will I Become in The Next Five Years?

I am Arifa Ainaya Azlyani, currently a freshman in English Literature Department at UIN

Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, now starting my explanation about what I will become in the next

five years. But first, I will describe what’s dream for me. As a human being, everybody have

their own dreams, goals, aims, or ambitions in life. Things like what kind of person will we grow

up to, job we want to achieve or both. Some of them are just a part of fascination, a fantasy we

created while we were day-dreaming in our childhoods and grew up with. However, our dreams

actually play an important role in our lives, because with dreams, we can encourage ourselves to

do better in order to achieve our goals. Dreams are made from things we see and hear, our habits,

and also our surroundings, and don’t have something that we want to achieve in 10 to 20 years,

even something that we want to achieve in 5 years is called a dream too.

One of my goals for the next five years is to be an english lecturer. The main reason why

I want it is pretty simple, my mother is an English teacher. Ever since I was a kid, I always saw

how my mom taught her students. To me, it was so dazzling. Even now, I always find it likewise.

A wise old man once said that an apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, and so I believe it’s true. I

have always been helping my mom teach mostly elementary and middle school students, and I

ended up liking it. Although I like teaching people, I don’t want to be an ordinary teacher. After

gave it some thoughts, I decided to be a lecturer, because a lecturer’s payment is higher than an

ordinary teacher in average.

Second, I dream to be a writer. I want to create a world that appears once in a blue moon,

a paradox between ordinary and unordinary things. To be able to create such a world that can

cradle people’s heart and even make people whose heart made of steel melts, I think it’ll be
wonderful. I want to write a story, no matter how realistic or unrealistic it is, I hope it can stay in

people’s heart, become even a small part of their live. A beautiful world written with

majestically shaped sentences just like in Shakespeare’s works, in a warm tale to pass on

generations, like Hamilton’s. In this rotting society, I really wish I am able to build a place like

that for people to go home and find themselves. To put it simply, I want to be a writer that can

create a wonderland inside a book. Right now, I only know how to write tragedy and thriller

stories with lots of plot twist here and there, but I will definitely learn the way.

Five years from now on, I’ll achieve my dreams, either it’s being a lecturer or a writer,

but I hope I can achieve both. To reach them, I will give them my all. I’m going to study really

hard and get my first degree, then apply to University of Indonesia to have it give me my second

degree. In the meanwhile, I’ll learn how to make an appropriate story, and publish my first story.

Therefore, the answer of this essay’s title is: I will become what I dream to be.
