And thus, starts the hymn that praises the 108 names of Lord Shiva.
नारायण उवाच ।
nArAyaNa uvAca
अस्तस्त गुह्यतमं गौरर नाम्नामष्टोत्तरं ितम् ।
िम्भोरहं प्रवक्ष्याशम पठतां िीघ्रकामदम् ॥
asti guhyatamaM gauri nAmnAmashTottaraM shatam
shambhorahaM pravakshyAmi paThatAM shIghrakAmadam
Lord Vishnu Said:
O Devi Gauri, there exists a secret list of 108 Names of Lord Shiva.
I shall now tell you these names, which when chanted provide quick results.
ॐ अस्य श्रीशिवाष्टोत्तरितनामस्तोत्रमन्त्रस्य नारायणऋश िः ।
अनुष्टु प्छन्दिः । श्रीसदाशिवो दे वता । गौरी उमा िस्ततिः ।
श्रीसाम्बसदाशिवप्रीत्यथे जपे शवशनयोगिः ॥
AUM asya shrIshivAshTottarashatanAmastotramantrasya nArAyaNaRshiH
anushTupchandaH shrIsadAshivo devatA gaurI umA shaktiH
shrIsAmbasadAshivaprItyarthe jape viniyogaH
AUM
Of this Holy Chant, the Seer is Sage Narayana;
The poetic meter is Anushtup;
The presiding deity is Lord SadaShiva;
The associated energy is Devi Gauri Uma;
The utility is in chanting the praise of Lord Samba Sada Shiva.
अथ ध्यानम् -
atha dhyAnam
And now, we meditate:
िान्ताकारं शिखररियनं नीलकण्ठं सु रेिं
शवश्वधारं स्फशटकसदृिं िुभ्रवणं िुभाङ्गम् ।
गौरीकान्तं शत्रतयनयनं योशगशभध्याा नगम्यं
वन्दे िम्भुं भवभयहरं सवा लोकैकनाथम् ॥
shAntAkAraM shikharishayanaM nIlakaNThaM sureshaM
vishvadhAraM sphaTikasadRshaM shubhravarNaM shubhAngam
gaurIkAntaM tritayanayanaM yogibhirdhyAnagamyaM
vande shambhuM bhavabhayaharaM sarvalokaikanAtham
I bow down to Lord Shambhu, who is the ruler of All Worlds and who destroys all fear.
He is the consort of Gauri, Has three eyes and is praised by all Yogis.
He supports the entire creation, is as clear as crystal with a pure and auspicious form.
He is the very embodiment of peace, resides on the peaks of mountain, has a blue neck
and is the Lord of Gods.
शिवो महे श्वरश्शम्भु िः शपनाकी िशििेखरिः ।
वामदे वो शवरूपाक्षिः कपदी नीललोशहतिः ॥ १॥

And now, we hear the benefits of this chant.
एतदष्टोत्तरं नाम्नां ितमाम्नायसं शमतं ।
िङ्करस्य शप्रया गौरी जप्वा िम्भु प्रसाददम् ॥ १॥
etadashTottaraM nAmnAM shatamAmnAyasaMmitaM
shankarasya priyA gaurI japtvA shambhuprasAdadam 1
Lord Narayana said:
By chanting this 108 Names, which are dear of Lord Shiva, O Devi Gauri:
त्रैकाल्यमन्वहं दे वी व ामेकं प्रयत्नतिः ।
अवाप सा िरीराधं प्रसादाच्छूलपाशणनिः ॥ २॥
traikAlyamanvahaM devI varshamekaM prayatnataH
avApa sA sharIrArdhaM prasAdAcchUlapANinaH 2
One attains all the three worlds by chanting it for an year;
Devi Gauri attained the left half of Lord Shiva, by his grace.
यस्तिसन्ध्यं पठे शित्यं नाम्नामष्टोत्तरं ितम् ।
ितरद्रशत्ररावृ त्या यत्फलं लभते नरिः ॥ ३॥
yastrisandhyaM paThennityaM nAmnAmashTottaraM shatam
shatarudratrirAvRtyA yatphalaM labhate naraH 3

One who regularly chants it three times a day, begets the result of chanting the Shata
Rudram thrice.
तत्फलं प्राप्नु याशित्यमे कावृ त्त्या नसं ियिः ।
सकृद्वा नामशभिः पू ज्य कुलकोशटं समु द्धरे त् ॥ ४॥
tatphalaM prApnuyAnnityamekAvRttyA nasaMshayaH
sakRdvA nAmabhiH pUjya kulakoTiM samuddharet 4
Without a doubt, one shall uplify one's entire family by chanting this stotram.
शिल्वपत्रै िः प्रिस्तै श्च पु ष्पैश्च तुलसीदलैिः ।
शतलाक्षतैयाजेद्यस्तु जीवन्मु तो न सं ियिः ॥ ५॥
bilvapatraiH prashastaishca pushpaishca tulasIdalaiH
tilAkshatairyajedyastu jIvanmukto na saMshayaH 5
One who chants this hymn, through offerings of Bilva and Tulasi Leaves, Flowers that
are dear to Shiva, and with unbroken sesame seeds, shall be free from the very
bondages of life and death.
इशत श्रीशिवाष्टोत्तरितनामिोत्रं समाप्तम् ॥
iti shrIshivAshTottarashatanAmastrotraM samAptam
And thus, the hymn that praises the 108 names of Lord Shiva, is Complete.
