Soft Skills in the Workplace

In any career, soft skills are daily attributes that help complete a task.
Soft skills can be skills like communication and work ethic, two broad skills that
will help you in the workplace. These skills are not tied to any specific jobs or
careers, instead, they can be applied to almost any workplace. Soft skills are the
essentials needed to be successful in a career. I personally need communication and
critical thinking, because of the constant interaction with customers as a computer
technician, also that the problems of a computer are never the same. Overall,
communication skills are one of the most important soft skills because it is an
essential skill to have to become better and to understand others.

Communication is a key role in a successful career. The more communication

you have with fellow employees and customers, the more you learn to develop as an
effective worker. Communication allows for an efficient work style by being able to
talk to customers and being able to make the best out of any conversation or
negotiation. Listed in my tree map, listening is a major skill in communication, by
being able to listen to someone, you can understand what their needs are. Listening
to fellow employees as well allows for the chance of knowing weaknesses and
strengths. I have used communication in my workplace in computer repairs by
understanding what the customer did to cause an issue. That allows me to work more
efficiently because I can know where the problem with the computer started.”A
computer hardware field technician must be able to communicate effectively with
clients and co-workers to share information and solve the problems that arise in
their everyday life” (careertechnical.edu).

Work Ethics are a fundamental part of maintaining an effective workplace.

These ethics allow someone to have standards when working. Being able to maintain
the ethics while working will increase productivity and self motivation. Work
ethics includes time management, which is a major responsibility within the
workplace. Making sure that all of the tasks required are finished on time and done
correctly. If you are working with a customer, being able to focus on finishing the
job required with efficiency and good time management can leave a lasting
impression. That impression can also be on a boss, which could lead to more
opportunities and potential more money. Businesses always look for mentions of a
good work ethic when reading recommendations and calling past places of employment.
If you are known for not having a good work ethic, they may not hire you. It is
fundamental that you maintain effective work ethics in normal jobs, rather than
just in a career because that can have an impact on your future employment. “If you
have a strong work ethic, you believe in the importance of your job and typically
feel that hard work is essential to maintaining a strong character” (indeed.com)

Leadership skills allow you to leave a lasting impression on employers and fellow
employees. These skills make working on tasks with others easier. Being able to
give clear feedback to others when they work on a common task is essential, so that
future assignments are easier to do with less mistakes. If there is something
wrong, such as another employee making mistakes, or a higher up mistake relating to
you, being able to bring up the problem and list possible solutions can show strong
leadership skills to others. For example, in computer repairs, if a customer is
having repeated problems, being able to show them how to prevent it in the future
can allow them to have more trust. Having leadership skills can help future
problems that involve needing a leader type figure in the workplace. “Whether
you're starting out in an entry-level position and looking to move up the career
ladder or you're seeking a promotion, your leadership skills will be among your
most valuable assets” (thebalancecareers.com)

Soft skills are essential for any career, but they are not the only skills that you
need. When working with machinery or equipment, you need to know how to operate
those items. That is where hard skills come into play. Hard skills are skills that
are required for certain careers, usually taught by going to college or getting
hands-on experience. These skills are fundamental for any career that requires a
certain education or time spent on the job. Soft skills are still just as or more
important when it comes to getting a career.

All of these soft skills have highlighted are only just some that you need to have
to be successful. The ones I have highlighted are ones that have helped me so far
in my education and will continue to help me going into my future career. Being
able to communicate effectively, have leadership traits and skills, and having an
effective work ethic will allow me to pursue my future career with confidence.
