Purpose
Canberra Hospital provides car parking facilities for staff, patients, visitors and contractors.
These range from all day, untimed regulated parking to drop off set down areas at main
entrances.
This procedure outlines the process that all Canberra Hospital based staff should follow
to progress a parking exemption for a patient or consumer.
All requests for parking exemptions are processed on behalf of a patient or consumer by an
ACT Health staff member.
This Parking exemption procedure applies to all employees based at the Canberra
Hospital, who requests a parking exemption on behalf of a patient or consumer
The aim of this procedure is to advise employees based at the Canberra Hospital which
patients or consumers are eligible for a parking exemption and how to obtain the
exemption on behalf of a patient or consumer.
Procedure
1. Permitted Exemptions
The parking exemption scheme makes allowance for patients who have been delayed in
treatment or admitted to the Canberra Hospital and cannot move their vehicle.
Parking exemptions are provided for a single day only.
The parking exemption scheme can also be offered under the following circumstances.
A family member or parent/guardian called in unexpectedly to visit or care for an ill
or dying member of the family.
Contractors attending the hospital following a Code Yellow – as approved by Senior
Manager Facilities Management
Emergency Service arrangements, including ACT Government agencies undertaking
urgent critical tasks, e.g. Corrective services vehicles with a client.

Note:
Parking exemptions are provided for a vehicle for one day only, in the location described.
Should the vehicle be moved to an alternate location, a new exemption should be sought. If
the parking is in a high traffic area or parked illegally this exemption will only apply for a time
limited time.
Procedure
Parking exemptions are obtained by a phone call being made to ACT Health Parking on Ph:
620 79148, by an ACT Health staff member on behalf of the client or consumer where
possible.
Procedure
Issued parking infringements cannot be revoked by ACT Health Parking Operations.
Information and instructions on how to dispute a parking ticket are on the back of the
Parking Infringement notice.
Persons disputing a fine can be referred to ACT Review Office on 132281.

To support any parking dispute, ward areas and outpatient areas are encouraged to
provide a certificate of attendance that the client can use to support their dispute
application.
This procedure has undergone consultation with Sustainable Transport and Working Group,
CHHS Operations Managers and administration managers from Critical Care and Medical
Imaging.
This procedure will be incorporated into existing training and orientation plans. The
Canberra Hospital Parking Exemption Workflow (Attachment 1) will be placed at
administration desks as a quick reference guide for employees to follow when requesting an
exemption on behalf of a patient/client.
