2.2.3. Graphic design using Adobe Photoshop CS3

Mr. Oboi Samson introduced Adobe Photoshop CS3 to me and my colleagues, he started by
definition and the uses of this software, he also continue with the installation of Adobe
Photoshop collection our laptop computers where we look in to different items in the menu bar
like file, edit, image, select, filter and their respective tool bar. The resources used are handout
and laptop computers and finally the challenge I had was software required 2 GB available space
of local Disk C which my is small capacity.
2.2.4. Operating Camera (Nikon D3000)

Here we started knowing the parts of the camera like turning on/off, cover of the lens, how to
preview the photo, and handling the camera than we continue with three aspect Zooming,
Focusing, Exposure in Nikon camera

Zoom: Adjusting the image size within the camera body.

Focus; depends on light passing through the camera lens at the proper angle to produce a clear
image.

Exposure; is the amount of light per unit area reaching a photographic film or electronic image
sensor, as determined by shutter speed, lens aperture and scene luminance.

10
Figure 2 Nikon D3000

2.2.5. Web Application programming (PHP).

Mr. Oboi Samson introduced to me PHP by defining, why do you need PHP, MySQL and
installation, PHP syntax i.e. hello world I and my colleagues continue with function, variables
like string, int among other, operator, switch, do and do while loop, if Elsa statement and Arrays
in PHP

11

2.2.6. Database programming MySQL.

I and my colleagues started by installing warm server to our laptop computers and we started
with introduction to MySQL some key terms used in DB programing DB, DBMS, entity,
Relationship and advantages of MySQL.

I and my colleague handle how to Create Database, Tables, and Insert data into a table,
UPDATING and SELECTING a specific data in the table in MySQL

Create database student;

Show databases;

Use student;

Create table ‘studentdetail’(reg varchar(25) fname varchar(15), lname varchar(15), course

12
2.2.7. Computer Networking
Networking being define as a group of interconnected computers that share resources and
information the information shared includes files, printers fax modem and Hard Disk.
Following are the area we did at ECL:

2.2.7.1. Identifying the IP address of computer at ECL.

Here I and my colleagues started by identifying the IP addresses of the computers at ECL as
illustrated in the table below

2.2.7.2. The architecture of the network at ECL
ECL is using Local Area Network (LAN) and architecture of the network means the physical
arrangement of the network structure i.e. star topology and it consist of the following three
printers, six computers, a router and dish.

13
Figure 4. The Architecture of the ECL network

2.2.7.3. Joining the home group of ECL

Follow the steps below to change the workgroup in Windows 10

1. With the right mouse button click the Start icon and choose System. If you have a touch
enabled device, click and hold the start button, then tap the System button.

2. Under “Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings” click on Change Settings

3. Under the tab “Computer Name” find the Change button and click it.

4. Under “Member Of” change the Workgroup name

5. Then click on OK, then when prompted reboot your device.

2.2.7.4. Sharing of the resources on the network

After joining workgroup open this PC in window 10, type the name of any computer in
workgroup you able to see the resource avalible in the network but for you to share the resources
just double click on the printer icon and give it time to install and you can print and sharing files

14
2.2.7.5 Termination of cables.
Crossover cable connect two different devices like router and computers and straight through
cable two same devices.
Mr. Joseph also when head and explain to me other devices used in networking like
1. Repeaters are simple devices that work at the physical layer of the OSI. They regenerate
signals (active hubs does that too).

2. Hubs are used to build a LAN by connecting different computers in a star/hierarchal

network topology, the most common type on LANs now a day. A hub is a very simple (or
dumb) device, once it gets bits of data sent from computer A to B, it does not check the
destination, instead, it forwards that signal to all other computers (B, C, D…) within the
network. B will then pick it up while other nodes discard it. This amplify that the traffic is
shared.

3. Switches on the other hand are more advanced. Instead of broadcasting the frames
everywhere, a switch actually checks for the destination MAC address and forwards it to the
relevant port to reach that computer only. This way, switches reduce traffic and divide the
collision domain into segments, this is very sufficient for busy LANs and it also protects
frames from being sniffed by other computers sharing the same segment.

4. Routers are used to connect different LANs or a LAN with a WAN (e.g. the internet).
Routers control both collision domains and broadcast domains. If the packet’s destination is
on a different network, a router is used to pass it the right way, so without routers, the
internet could not functions. Routers use NAT (Network Address Translation) in
conjunction with IP Masquerading to provide the internet to multiple nodes in the LAN
under a single IP address. Routers work on the network layer so they can filter data based on
IP addresses. They have routing tables to store network addresses and forward packets to the
right port.

15
Figure 5 Router
5. Gateways are very intelligent devices or else can be a computer running the appropriate
software to connect and translate data between networks with different protocols or
architecture, so their work is much more complex than a normal router. For instance,
allowing communication between TCP/IP clients and IPX/SPX or AppleTalk. Gateways
operate at the network layer and above, but most of them at the application layer.

2.2.8. Stationary

The following are the areas I learned:

1. Sealing of document like certificate, birth certificate, transcript among other for customer of
ECL
2. Type setting of CV, application form among other for client of ECL
3. Spiral banding of the book of report book for client
4. Receipt numbering
5. Duplication of movies
6. Photocopying of document A4, A3 and other sizes
7. Printing of document, photos of different sizes like 4*6, 1.4*1.8, 8*12, movies covers
among other.

16
Figure 6 Epson printer

2.2.8. Video editing

I and my colleagues started with the installation of power Director 16:9 for video editing and
here are the following feature in the menu bar

Figure 7 installation of power director 16

2.2.9. Website Development and design.

Mr. Elungat Joseph introduced to me Website Development using WordPress we Began form
installation of WordPress in to xampp directory i.e. inside folder called htdocs and we created a
user in PHP my admin and the database before running the installation

Figure 8 WordPress

2.2.10. Computer maintenance and repair.

The following are area we handle in computer maintenance:

1. Blowing the System Unit

Here have learned tip of blowing System Unit like turn off the system Unit, know how to open
the case, unplug the System Unit, and never apply liquid directly to the component

2. Dissembling and assembling of both System Unit and a Laptop computer

3. Testing the following components
A. Power supply

18
Read Important PC Repair Safety Tips because of the dangers involved with the process. Manually
testing a power supply involves working closely with high voltage electricity

Open your computer's case. In short, this involves turning off the computer, removing the power cable,
and unplugging anything else connected to the outside of your computer.

To make testing your power supply easier, you should also move your disconnected and open
case somewhere easy to work like on a table or other flat, non-static surface.

Unplug the power connectors from each and every internal device.

Group all of the power cables and connectors together for easy testing.

As you're organizing the power cables, we highly recommend rerouting them and pulling them
as far away from the computer case as possible. This will make it as easy as possible to test the
power supply connections.

Short out pins 15 and 16 on the 24-pin motherboard power connector with a small piece of wire.

You'll probably need to take a look at the ATX 24-pin 12V Power Supply Pinout table to
determine the locations of these two pins.

Confirm that the power supply voltage switch located on the power supply is properly set for
your country.

After connecting power supply failed to run it mean spoiled.

2.2.11. Microsoft Office suite.

At ECL I was given opportunity to teach students with some of the office packages like
Microsoft word I lecture two girl called Ajambo Christine and Imede Scovia other packages I
discussed with my colleagues

1. MS Word: I began by lunching (opening MS word) word to my students and continued that
allows you create, edit, view, and share your files with others quickly and easily. Edit
documents attached to emails, collaborate with your team and bring the Microsoft Office
features with you wherever you go. Your office moves with you when you use Microsoft
Word.

2. MS power Point: here I just discussed with my colleagues on the application which was
developed with the aim of facilitating its users with developing eye catching slide show
presentations.

3. MS Access: I used for creating databases, a blank web database, or pick from a variety of
templates. A blank database is a standard Access database, and is good for local use. Creating
a blank database will create one table as well. Web databases are designed to be compatible.

4. MS Excel: I explain Excel to my students that you create, view, edit, and share your files
with others quickly and easily. Manage charts, data analyses and more while you view and
edit workbooks attached to email messages. Work in data analysis, accounting, auditing,
finance, or any other fields with confidence.

In conclusion before Microsoft office I always start by introducing computer to my students

That introduction to computer has three main components: hardware, software, and people.
The equipment associated with a computer system is called hardware. Software is a set of

20
instructions that tells the hardware what to do. People, however, are the most important
component of a computer system

2.3. Limitation of the field work attachment.

The field attachment period was too short. The intern could at times work overtime extensions
in order to accomplish particular tasks, but still time was not enough to accomplish the E-
learning system development as earlier planned.

Technically, there were challenges of incompatibility of software for running the new web
development technologies like the Adobe Photoshop CS3 with windows 8 operating system.

On Thursday 2nd July, 2019, the intern reinstalled windows 8 and installed windows 7 and
then used the procedures compiled in to install successfully.

Client come with faulty computers and expect instant action to be taken without time
consideration

Most people do not know the internet instead misused it for fraud and phonographic purpose.

Apart from the above and other minor challenges such as limited finances to cater for lunch for
the internee, the field attachment went on smoothly.

Language problem because some clients knowns only Ateso

2.5. Lesson learned from field work.

The intern accumulated a lot of knowledge and skills during the field attachment. Each of the
duties and responsibilities as listed in empowered and greatly impacted on his career.

Presented below is a summary of the key new skills and knowledge gained.

2.5.1. Website Development and Publishing.

At the beginning of the field attachment, the intern only knew some basic WordPress, HTML,
CSS and PHP. New skills and knowledge acquired included: wat

2.5.2. System Analysis and Design. At the beginning of the field attachment, the student only
had theoretical knowledge about the system analysis and design process. The student:
• Learnt how to generate requirements of a real system and how to write a requirements
specification document (RSD) for a system to be developed.
• Got fact-finding skills through on-site observation, interview and focused group discussion
methods.
• Got practical skills on the SDLC, how to design ERDs and how to map the ERDs to actual
Database tables with attributes, primary keys and foreign keys. This was mainly during the
design of the system.

2.5.3. Software installations and configurations.

At the beginning of the field attachment, the student generally had software installation skills in
a GUI-based windows environment. The student:
• Learnt how to install windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10 alongside drivers on PCs with the restricted
UEFI secure boot as shown in figure 3.2.
• Acquired skills of how to install and configure software applications via CLI-based
terminals in Windows User
2.5.4. Computer Hardware Troubleshooting.
During the internship period, the intern worked on various computer hardware tasks. News
skills and knowledge acquired include:

22
• Learnt how to solve the problem of blue screen of death resulting from NMI Errors caused
by malfunctioning adapter cards.
• Also discovered how to refill toner LaserJet HP and refilling ink in Epson printers as shown
in

Figure 3.4 .

Figure 9 Dissembling Laptop Computer and Refilling Toner

The student dismantled a laptop that had hardware NMI errors and fixed it. Right: On 24th July
he did a toner refill of the office printer cartridge.

2.5.5. Marketing Web and ICT Services to prospective clients.

The intern learnt how to do social media marketing by embedding social media plugins into
websites. He learnt how to plan, organize and design marketing materials such as fliers before
going to the field to meet potential customers. Microsoft Office Publisher program and Adobe
Creative Suite CS6 programs such as Adobe Fireworks and Adobe Illustrator were used to
design the graphics on the fliers.

23
And other include:

• Networking computers to share file and resources like printers and files.
• New knowledge about the Camera operating and skills on how to manipulate it.
• Video editing using power director 16. Has held the title of world's fastest video editing
software for several versions. Powered by the 64-bit True Velocity engine and with the
support of Open CL, multi-GPGPU acceleration and latest hardware acceleration
technology, making Power Director video editing software among the best for HD and 4K
video rendering.
• Graphic using Adobe Photoshop CS3.
• Stationary work like type setting, Laminating, printing movies covers, spiral banding and
scanning of document
• Operation of camera
• Designing logo

2.5.5. Most interesting experiences.

During this Field Attachment period, the intern really enjoyed the experience of working at
ELEDAN Consult Limited including the comfortable working atmosphere, the technical
guidance on the latest web technologies and the friendly relationship among the staff
exhibited. Out of all these interesting moments, four extremely interesting experiences on the
following areas.

1. Fault find and fault solving

2. Interpersonal skills
3. Discipline and being self-motivated
4. Being keen and observant while interacting with clients.
5. Time management being the key every aspect of life.
6. Being patient and tolerant to both staff and clients.
7. Team work and unity
8. Documentation of whatever you do to enable easy work in case the same problem occur
again.

24
9. Being creative to address the tasks and unexpected challenges.

CHAPTER THREE

CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

3.1. Make conclusion about the fieldwork exercise.

Kumi University sends us for field attachment with the main objective of enabling me to get
hands-on real life experiences in environments they are expected to work in when they
graduate. ELEDAN Consult Limited, Soroti was well prepared to take on the students for field
attachment in the position of a web systems developer.

I was exposed to new technologies in web development, including WordPress, CSS, bootstrap,
He used these technologies to work on projects such as the E-learning website system. Other
activities that I engaged in included hardware and software configurations.

Summarized below were the general strengths and weaknesses noted during the field attachment.

Strengths: I had a wide range of computer skills, and possessed knowledge about most
computer related tasks. The field attachment helped me to apply the knowledge taught at
university to the field of work by working on real life projects ELearning. The field
supervisors were very helpful and offered great guidance. This helped the interns to learn a lot
of new knowledge and skills as indicated throughout this report.

Weaknesses: The student had little awareness about office etiquette, especially times when he
could get over excited after solving a challenge of accomplishing a particular task. By shouting
in excitement, he could disrupt other staff in the office, but he was cautioned about the habit
and he stopped it. On the side of the university. The internship period was quite small, cutting
short the great experiences at their climax. Because of this, some project work was not
completed during the field attachment period.

25
3.2. Recommendation
As internee, a good relationship with supervisor is pivotal to successful completion of my
internship. The support of a good supervisor after internship can also provide me with good
connections and references to outside world on my career.

Also get into the habit of documenting whatever task me do on a daily basis. The records made
are not only important and useful when writing your final report, but also very important as a
reference in future when faced with similar tasks.

3.3. Make recommendation to the organization

The recommendation for ECL is that in future, the organization should not dwell a lot on the
basic technologies like PHP, MYSQL in the first and other programming languages like java
and C programming, since the interns are expected to have knowledge about these basics.
Instead, a simple review of those technologies is enough and then deadline based tasks
focusing more on delivering outputs showcasing competences in advanced technologies,
would be a better time saving strategy.

3.4. Make recommendation to the University

The university should not wait until the end of the semester before allocating interns to their
supervisors. All planning should be done early enough so that the internees can get the
contacts of their supervisors even before going to the field. If this is done.

This course unit Field Attachment, should be shifted to the third year of study, such that it is
given more time, at least six months. Many studies have concluded that two months internships
are too small Shifting the field attachment to the final year will further increase the chances for
interns to be retained by the employers, and just continue with their jobs officially upon
graduation. Many of the interns were offered places at their internship companies, but since they
were still in second year and they had to go back to the University for Third Year to complete the
degree program, their opportunities of being retained were forfeited.
