I. Comprehension Questions

1. How do you differentiate the types of communication in relation to communication mode?

Ans. The types of communication in relation is about connecting and using your verbal, written
and physical skills to fulfil your partner’s needs. It’s not about making small talk. It’s about
understanding your partner’s point of view. While the types of communication mode includes
natural speech, facial expression and proper gesture. It shows greetings with a welcoming smile
and answering queries by a friendly, happy and pleasant disposition.

2. How can visual communication enhance the message conveyed by a speaker? Cite a
particular situation when it is best to employ visual communication.

Ans. Visual communication is the most effective way of passing information because the human
mind processes things in images. The majority of people respond quickly to visual images
instead of texts. Examples of situations that uses visual communication are conferences, trade
shows, websites, social media posts, office presentation and meetings.

3. How can you listen to speakers‘ opinions through electronic media without being easily
swayed into accepting their opinions?

Ans. In listening to speaker’s opinion through electronic media, I should listen and understand
the thought of his opinion, know his background and experiences and listen to the comments of
others about him.

4. Would you know any strategy or method by which you can reduce the complexity of
understanding another culture? Do you think it will work with your current set of foreign
classmates/friends?

Ans. The methods to reduce the complexity of understanding another culture are: be open
minded, do research about cultural background, practice active listening, watch your non-
verbal communication and maintain a personal touch. I think it will work with my foreign
friends because I know already about their culture and I respect them.

5. How do you differentiate formal communication from informal communication in relation to

purpose and style? Provide situations to illustrate the differences.

Ans. In relation to purpose and style, formal communication employs formal language delivered
orally or in written form. Orders, reports, emails, letters, project proposals, public
talks/speeches, lectures and business letters are using formal communication, while informal
communication certainly does not employ formal language. It involves personal and ordinary
conversations with friends, family members. The mode may be oral as in face to face, ordinary
or everyday talks and phone calls, personal notes or text messages.
Task 1.2.1: Organizational Culture
I. Interview a certain head of an organization/company and ask him/her the following
questions:

1. What is the culture of your organization?

Ans. The culture of an organization I interviewed was like the downward and upward
communication. If there’s announcements, it came from their head down to the subordinates.
And if there’s feedbacks, it is from subordinates send to their heads.

2. Do you think cultures can be created? Modified? Changed?

Ans. Cultures can be created because individuals who work in that certain company knows
already about the rules and standards for communication protocol, and it is clearly stated so
that interaction patterns will be established. Cultures could also be modified or changed
depending on the comments and suggestions they received. If they will accept those
suggestions, they would modify or change their culture.

II. In the school where you are currently enrolled, what is the prevailing organizational culture?
What are some of the practices/rituals that you observe?

Ans. In the school I am currently enrolled. The organization culture that is prevailing is formal
communication; downward and upward communication. I observe that their practices about
announcements are coming from the campus dean down to the department deans, to the
teachers, then to the students. And during the enrolment processing, the feedbacks of the
students even though social -media, it was then bought to the head and were given solutions,
so they are using formal communication.

Task 1.2.2: Individual Activity

Make a conversation which shows the type of communication you are going to present. Explain
the situation and the type of communication illustrated. Use the space below for your output.

Student 1: Have you seen my book? I can’t remember where I put it.
Student 2: Which one?
Student 1: The murder mystery. The one you borrowed.
Student 2: Is this it?
Student 1: No, It’s the one you borrowed
Student 2: I did not!
Student 1: Maybe it’s under the chair. Can you look?
Student 2: Ok, just give me a minute.
Student 1: How long are you going to be?
Student 2: Geez, why so impatient? I hate when you get bossy.
Student 1: Forget it. I’ll find it myself.
