There are twelve (12) months in a year. Learning to count from 1 to 12


helps you learn the months of the year in Japanese easily. To express months
in Japanese, simply add GATSU at the end of the number. Please study the
months of the year introduced both in English and Japanese below.

Days of a month ~nichi

Nannichi what day of the month?

Nanyoubi what day of a week?

Usually, there are thirty-one (31) days in a month. Learning to count from
1 to 31 helps you learn the days of the month in Japanese easily. To express
days of the month in Japanese, simply add NICHI at the end of the number.
But there are exceptions to this rule, 1st to 10th days, 14th, 20th, and 24th days
of the month has a special term. Remember also that in the 19th and 29th days
of the month, number 9 is not read as “kyuu” but “ku”. While in the 17th and
27th days, 7 is not read as “nana” but “shichi”. Please study the days of the
month on the next page.
