To learn the alphabet is very important because it will help you spell your name when you are on the phone
giving personal information, asking for people’s names and directions.
Let’s practice with a classmate to exchange each other’s names and last names. When you need someone to

Spelling final –S vs. –ES
These rules apply when the sentence is in the third person of the singular. Vowels are a, e, i, o, u. consonants
are all the other letters in the alphabet.
a) Visit – visits answer - answers Final – s, not –es, is added to most verbs.
Speak – speaks happen – happens (INCORRECT: visites, speakes, answeres,
happenes.)
b) Hope – hopes write - writes Many verbs end in –e final –s is simply added.
c) Catch – catches fix - fixes Final –es is added if the verb ends in –ch, -sh, -s,
Wash – washes buzz – buzzes -x or –z.
Pass – passes
d) Do – does go - goes Final –es is added to do and go.
e) Study – studies try – tries If a verb ends in consonant + -y, change the –y to
–I and add –es (INCORRECT: paies or payes.)
f) Pay – pays buy - buys
The contraction of names and the verb to be occurs only when the subject of the sentence is the third person
of the singular. To contract them you must add an apostrophe and an –s to the name at the end.
For example:
