Chapter 1
Lesson 1

Your First Basic Knowledge of English

Learn the alphabet and its pronunciation:

A = ei J = llei S = es
B = bi K = kei T = ti
C = si L = el U = iu
D = di M = emm V = vi
E=i N = enn W = dóbliu
F = ef O = ou X = ex
G = lli P = pi Y = uai
H = eich Q = kiu Z = zi
I = ay (ai) R = arr

To learn the alphabet is very important because it will help you spell your name when you are on the phone
giving personal information, asking for people’s names and directions.

Let’s practice with a classmate to exchange each other’s names and last names. When you need someone to
spell a name or a word, the question you should ask is: How do you spell _________? (in the space in blank
you may use “your name”, “pronounce the word”, “that word”, etc).

Let’s get to work! Now pair up with one of your classmates and practice the following conversation:

Student A: Hi! My name is ___________________. What is your name?

Student B: My name is_________________. Nice to meet you _________________!
Student A: Nice to meet you too.
Student B: Excuse me! How do you spell your name?
Student A: My name spells ______________________________________________.
What about your name?
Student B: My name spells ______________________________________________.

Here are some questions that you can use to interact while in the classroom:

1. Excuse me! Can you repeat it again please?

2. How do you say (a word in Spanish) in English?
3. What does (A word or phrase in English) mean?
4. What is the meaning of (a word or phrase in English)?
5. Can you spell (a word in English) for me please?
6. Can you speak louder please?
7. Excuse me! May I go to the bathroom?
8. Sorry! I did not understand. Can you speak slowly please?

For example:
