ELC3410
1 The binary data 001101001 is applied to the input of a duobinary system
(a) Construct the duobinary coder output and corresponding receiver output, without a precoder.
(b) Suppose that the level at the receiver input produced by the second digit is reduced to zero.
Construct the new receiver output.
(c) Repeat (a) and (b), assuming the use of a precoder in the transmitter.
2 The binary data 011100101 is applied to the input of a modified duobinary system.
(a) Construct the coder output and corresponding receiver output, without a precoder.
(b) Suppose that due to error during transmission, the third bit is received in error. Construct the
receiver output.
3 A precoder for a partial response signal fails to work if the desired partial response at n=0 is zero
modulo M. For example, consider the desired response for M=2:
 2 n0
 1 n 1

x(nT )  
 1 n  2
0 otherwise
Show why this response can not be precoded.
4 Binary PAM is used to transmit information over an unequalized linear filter channel. When 1 is
transmitted the noise-free output of the demodulator is
0.3 m  1
0.9 m  0

pc (mT )  
0.3 m  1
0 otherwise
1 m0
Design a three-tap zero-forcing equalizer so that the output is peq (mT )  
0 m  1
5 The transmission of a signal pulse with raised cosine spectrum through a channel results in the
following (noise-free) sampled output from the demodulator:
 0.5 k  2
 0.1 k  1

 1 k 0
pc (kT )  
 0.2 k 1
 0.05 k 2

0 otherwise
Determine the tap coefficients of a 3-tap linear equalizer based on the zero forcing criterion.
6 Determine the tap weight coefficients of a three tap zero forcing equalizer if the ISI spans theree symbo;s
and is characterized by the values pc(0)=1, pc(-T)=0.3 and pc(T)=0.2. Also determine the residual ISI at
the output of the equalizer.
7 In a binary PAM, the input to the detector is ym= am + nm + im, where, am=±1 is the desired signal, nm
is a zero mean Gaussian random variable with variance n2, and im represents the ISI due to channel
distortion. The ISI term is a random variable which takes the values -0.5, 0, 0.5 with probabilities
0.25, 0.5, 0.25 respectively. Determine the average probability of error as a function of n2.
8 Sketch the signal and construct the corresponding eye pattern (without channel distortion and noise)
for a binary PAM with the data sequence 1011100010 when the signal has a
(a) polar format and p(t )  (t / Tb )
(b) polar format and p (t )  cos 2 (t / 2Tb ) (t / 2Tb )
