COURSE : AK103 ENGLISH FOR COMMUNICATION 1

INSTRUCTIONAL DURATION : 15 WEEKS

SYNOPSIS

ENGLISH FOR COMMUNICATION 1 recapitulates the basic skills needed in using a


dictionary. It also enables the students to gather information from various sources and
write short messages / notes.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:

1. utilize the English-and-Malay dictionary in determining correct defintions and


parts of speech for the selected or highlighted words or phrases based on the
context given or presented.

2. use the given words or phrases appropriately according to their parts of speech
or meanings in which the intended messages are conveyed clearly.

3. summarize a technical or non-technical text in the form of powerpoint slides,


text organizer or lecture note effectively.

4. prepare a short review of a movie or documentary clip with English subtitle


accurately.

5. deliver short messages / notes in written form appropriately and concisely.

6. interpret and respond to messages / short notes appropriately and effectively in


written form.

SUMMARY (15 LECTURE : 15 TUTORIAL)

RTA
1.0 DICTIONARY SKILLS ( 03 : 05 )
This topic aims to provide students with the skills of using a
bilingual dictionary in defining meanings of words and recognizing
their grammatical structures .

2.0 GIVING AND RESPONDING TO SHORT MESSAGES / NOTES ( 06 : 06 )


The topic enables students to gather information and respond to
short messages / notes received appropriately. The emphasis is
on the construction of comprehensible phrases and sentences.

3.0 INFORMATION PROCESSING SKILLS ( 06 : 04 )


This topic aims to develop students’ general reading skills such as
skimming, scanning and deducing meaning in technical and non-
technical texts as well as movies or documentaries with English
subtitles.

1.0 DICTIONARY SKILLS


1.1 Find meanings of words in the dictionary
1.1.1 Locate words using running heads.
1.1.2 Identify common registers in the dictionary.
1.1.3 Identify appropriate meaning of words as used in the context.
1.1.4 Translate the words or phrases into Bahasa Malaysia.

1.2 Distinguish word formation and parts of speech


1.2.1 Identify the part of speech that a word belongs to.
1.2.2 Use a word in its correct part of speech.

2.0 GIVING AND RESPONDING TO SHORT MESSAGES / NOTES


2.1 Understand short messages / notes
2.1.1 Identify the purpose of message.
2.1.2 Locate the main ideas of the message.

2.2 Write short messages / notes


2.2.1 Introduce oneself or a friend / guest.
2.2.2 Make social enquiries and suggestions.
2.2.3 Extend invitations for various occasions.

2.3.1 Respond to enquiries, suggestions and invitations
2.3.2 Determine the tones applied in the messages.
2.3.3 Write messages using the appropriate tone.

3.0 INFORMATION PROCESSING SKILLS

3.1 Gather information from technical and non-technical texts.


3.1.1 Deduce the meanings of difficult words using contextual clues.
3.1.2 Skim texts for overall meaning.
3.1.3 Scan texts to locate specific information.
3.1.4 Prepare notes containing only the important information in the
form of PowerPoint slides, text organizers or lecture notes.

3.2 Watch and understand movie or/and documentary clips with English
subtitles.
3.2.1 List down slangs, jargons and/or terminologies used.
3.2.2 Find the meanings of selected slangs, jargons and/or
terminologies as used in the movie or documentary clips.
3.2.3 Write a short review of a movie or documentary clip.

ASSESSMENT

TYPES OF ASSESSMENT

The course is assessed through 100% Continuous Assessment

CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT (CA):

Continuous assessment is carried out throughout the semester and


comprises of the following:

a. Quiz (minimum 2) 20%


b. Test (minimum 1) 20%

c. Essay Question (minimum 3) 60%
