2.1 General Information and Components

This function possible only if the vehicle has a rain/light recogni‐
tion sensor and the headlamp switch is set to AUTO.
The following components are included in this function:
♦ Vehicle Electrical System Control Module -J519-
♦ Rain/Light Recognition Sensor -G397-
♦ Headlamp Switch -E1-
♦ Comfort System Central Control Module -J393-

♦ Tail Lamps
♦ Headlamps

2.2 Function Description

Function Requirement
1 - Switching on based on the ambient light
The rain/light recognition sensor -G397- sends the ambient light
information to the vehicle electrical system control module -J519-
via the LIN data bus.
The follow criteria must be met in order for the rain/light recogni‐
tion sensor to work correctly:
♦ The glass near the sensor must be clean.
♦ The coding in the rain/light recognition sensor must be adap‐
ted to the glass.
The lamps could switch on too early or too late if the working range
for the rain/light recognition sensor is set incorrectly.
If the brightness limit is not met, then the data bus tells the vehicle
electrical system control module to switch on the headlamps.

The comfort system central control module -J393- switches on the

tail lamps and the vehicle electrical system control module
switches on the headlamps. The illumination for the instrument
cluster and the switches will also be switched on.
2 - Switching on via the rain recognition sensor
The low beams will switch on after a predetermined number of
wipe cycles (rain/light recognition sensor). The number of wipe
cycles depends on the ambient light.
The comfort system central control module switches on the tail
lamps and the vehicle electrical system control module switches
on the headlamps.
The rain/light recognition sensor switches off automatically if the
wipers do not move for a specific amount of time. On this case
the illumination for the instrument cluster and the switches will not
switch on.
3 - Switching on via the fog lamps
Whenever the fog lamp button is pressed, the low beam head‐
lamps turn on if the switch is set to AUTO. This will happen
regardless of the amount of darkness

2.3 Service Information

It is very important to make sure the rain/light recognition sensor
-G397- is installed correctly if a windshield is being replaced. The
coding in the rain/light recognition sensor must be changed if a
different type of windshield is being installed. Refer to Guided
Fault Finding, 09 - electronic central electric, rain/light recognition
sensor functions.
The low beams will switch on for reasons of safety even if the rain/
light recognition sensor is faulty and the headlamp switch -E1- is
set to AUTO.
The driver can set the sensitivity of the rain/light recognition sen‐
sor via the CAR menu in the MMI. It is possible to set the switch-
on point in the exterior lamps menu. There are three possible
settings: early, central and late.

3.1 General Information and Components

The high beam assistant makes it possible for the high beams to
switch on and off based on the traffic and the ambient conditions.
This prevents glare for the other motorists as well as unnecessary
use of the high beams.
This function is possible only if the vehicle has a rain/light recog‐
nition sensor and an automatic high beam control module.
The automatic high beam switch-on includes the following com‐
ponents:
♦ Headlamp Switch -E1-
♦ Turn Signal Switch -E2-

♦ Rain/Light Recognition Sensor -G397-
♦ Instrument Cluster Control Module -J285-
♦ Vehicle Electrical System Control Module -J519-

To activate the high beam assistant, set the headlamp switch -

E1- to AUTO and then push the turn signal switch -E2- one time
to the front. The steering column electronic systems control mod‐
ule -J527- recognizes the position of the turn signal switch and
sends the message to the vehicle electrical system control mod‐
ule -J519- via the CAN Bus Comfort.
The headlamp symbol in the instrument cluster will illuminate with
an “A” to let the driver know the high beam assistant is on. When
the high beams are on, the blue high beam symbol also comes
on.

Functionality
The base of the interior rearview mirror has a camera with CMOS
images sensors, which also switch on and off the low beam (see
chapter 2) and the high beam. The electronics, automatic high
beam control module, are integrated in the automatic dimming
interior rearview mirror.
The CMOS camera takes a white and red picture of the actual
traffic and ambient conditions. The automatic high beam control
module evaluates the information and switches the high beams
on or off.
If passing or approaching vehicles are recognized, the CAN Bus
sends the request to the vehicle electrical system control module

to switch off the high beam. A request to switch off will also be
sent if a specific minimum vehicle speed is not reach or if the
ambient brightness exceeds a set limit because of the daylight or
bright street illumination. If there are no switch off conditions
present, then a switch off request will be sent.
The vehicle electrical system control module controls the bulbs
for the left and right high beam headlamps as well as the left and
right low beam reflector motors based on the high beam recom‐
mendation sent from the automatic high beam control module
when the automatic high beam switch-on is activated and the ve‐
hicle road speed exceeds a defined value and the vehicle elec‐
trical system control module simultaneously gives the command
to the rain/light recognition sensor to switch on.
If the rain/light recognition sensor does not send the switch-off
command, then the high beams are not controlled. If the high
beams were switched off by the high beam assistant, and if the
rain/light recognition sensor sends the command to switch off the
low beams then the high beam is no longer controlled.
The driver can then manually switch the high beams on or off.
If the automatic high beam control module sends a switch-off
command, the driver can switch the high beams back on by push‐

cardiagn.com
ing the turn signal switch forward one time. The high beam
assistant is now temporarily deactivated. Pushing the turn signal
switch forward one more time will activate the high beam assistant
again. If the driver pulls the turn signal switch after the temporary
deactivation, the high beams will be switched off and the high
beam assistant remains deactivated.
If the high beam assistant switches on the high beams, the driver
can switch them off by pulling the turn signal switch one time. The
high beam assistant will remain deactivated. If the driver pushes
the turn signal switch forward one time when the high beams are
on, then the high beam assistant will be deactivated temporarily
and the high beams remain on. When the turn signal switch is
pushed again, the automatic high beam is activated. If the turn
signal switch is pulled once again after it was temporarily deacti‐
vated, then the high beam assistant is deactivated permanently.

The brake lamp switch is now switched by the pedal bracket. The
connected control modules read the switch condition. The engine
control module is the master of this function and sends the brake
lamp on command to the CAN data bus.
Braking also takes place via brake pressure sensor 1 -G201- .
When the brake pedal is pressed, brake pressure sensor 1 will
transmit the brake pressure to the ABS control module -J104- .
The engine control module imports the information via the data
bus and then transmits this brake lamp on command to all the
other control modules via the data bus.
The control modules switch on the brake lamps as soon as the
wire or the CAN data bus transmits the brake lamp on command.
This assures that the brake lamps will function even if there is an
interruption in the wires.

The headlamp range control must be adapted to the different
loads because of the different angles of the vehicle. This is es‐
pecially important to prevent glare by oncoming traffic.

12.2 Manual Headlamp Range Control De‐

scription
Halogen headlamps have manual headlamp range control. The
headlamps can be adjusted to adapt to the vehicle load using the
headlamp adjuster -E102- . The headlamp adjuster is connected
to the motors. The driver can adjust the headlamp range control
using the adjustment wheel so that oncoming traffic is not blinded.

System Description - Exterior Lamps - Edition 09.2008

12.3 Automatic Dynamic Range Control De‐

scription
The automatic/dynamic range control adapts not only to the static
vehicle load, but also to the dynamic chassis angles, such as
when braking and accelerating.
The load is monitored by level sensors. The vehicle speed signal,
the acceleration signal and the braking signal are processed by
the automatic/dynamic range control. These parameters are eval‐
uated by the headlamp range control module -J431- as the vehi‐
cle is moving. Motors then adjust the position of the headlamps.
The adjustment of the headlamps must take place very quickly.
The motors are actually stepper motors and the headlamp range
control module communicates with the other control modules via
the 500k baud drive CAN.

12.4 Automatic/Dynamic Range Control with

AFS Description
The automatic/dynamic range control with AFS has the same
functionality as the automatic/dynamic range control. The auto‐
matic/dynamic range control with AFS includes the dynamic cor‐

cardiagn.com
nering lamp. The dynamic cornering lamp is also called the
Adaptive Light.
The headlamp range control module -J431- the different driving
parameters while the vehicle is moving, such as, the vehicle
speed, the steering angle, the yaw rate, etc. The headlamps move
when driving around curves based on the evaluation of the pa‐
rameters. This provides optimal illumination of the street. Safety
and comfort are increased because the range of view has been
enlarged.
Integrated motors move the headlamps horizontally in a dynamic
cornering lamp. The headlamp lenses and mounts do not move.
The projection module does not move when the vehicle is sta‐
tionary or being driven at less than 6 km/h.
The headlamp range control module communicates with the other
control modules in the vehicle via the 500k baud drive data bus.
The control module communicates with the power output stages
in the headlamp via a 500k baud sub data bus. The advantage to
this is that if there is a malfunction between the control module
and the power output stage, only the function of the range control
will stop, but not the entire drive data bus.

12.5 Show Room

“Show Room” makes it possible to see the effects of the dynamic
cornering lamp. This way the headlamps can move horizontally
depending on the position of the steering wheel when the vehicle
is standing still. Show Room can be activated or deactivated using
the diagnosis tester in the headlamp range control module -
J431- . If the vehicle is moving at a very low speed, Show Room
is automatically deactivated. The diagnosis tester must activated
it again.

12.6 Trip Mode

with respect to the correctness of information in this document. Copyright by AUDI AG.
If the vehicle is driven in countries where the traffic drives on the
other side of the road than where it is normally driven, both head‐
lamps must be adjusted in such a way that the asymmetrical low
beam does not blind the oncoming traffic. “Trip Mode” can be ac‐
tivated using the diagnosis tester in the headlamp range control
module -J431- . After this feature is activated, the yellow range
control warning lamp in the instrument cluster will come on for a
short time after turning on the ignition.

Cautions & Warnings

Please read these WARNINGS and CAUTIONS before proceeding with maintenance
and repair work. You must answer that you have read and you understand these
WARNINGS and CAUTIONS before you will be allowed to view this information.

•= If you lack the skills, tools and equipment, or a suitable workshop for any procedure described in
this manual, we suggest you leave such repairs to an authorized Audi retailer or other qualified
shop. We especially urge you to consult an authorized Audi retailer before beginning repairs on
any vehicle that may still be covered wholly or in part by any of the extensive warranties issued by
Audi.

•= Disconnect the battery negative terminal (ground strap)whenever you work on the fuel system or
the electrical system. Do not smoke or work near heaters or other fire hazards. Keep an approved

Cautions & Warnings
•= Do not re-use any fasteners that are worn or deformed in normal use. Some fasteners are
designed to be used only once and are unreliable and may fail if used a second time. This
includes, but is not limited to, nuts, bolts, washers, circlips and cotter pins. Always follow the
recommendations in this manual - replace these fasteners with new parts where indicated, and
any other time it is deemed necessary by inspection.

•= Illuminate the work area adequately but safely. Use a portable safety light for working inside or
under the vehicle. Make sure the bulb is enclosed by a wire cage. The hot filament of an
accidentally broken bulb can ignite spilled fuel or oil.

•= Friction materials such as brake pads and clutch discs may contain asbestos fibers. Do not create
dust by grinding, sanding, or by cleaning with compressed air. Avoid breathing asbestos fibers and
asbestos dust. Breathing asbestos can cause serious diseases such as asbestosis or cancer, and
may result in death.

•= Finger rings should be removed so that they cannot cause electrical shorts, get caught in running
machinery, or be crushed by heavy parts.

•= Before starting a job, make certain that you have all the necessary tools and parts on hand. Read

cardiagn.com
all the instructions thoroughly, do not attempt shortcuts. Use tools that are appropriate to the work
and use only replacement parts meeting Audi specifications. Makeshift tools, parts and
procedures will not make good repairs.

•= Catch draining fuel, oil or brake fluid in suitable containers. Do not use empty food or beverage
containers that might mislead someone into drinking from them. Store flammable fluids away from
fire hazards. Wipe up spills at once, but do not store the oily rags, which can ignite and burn
spontaneously.

tools to tighten fasteners, especially on light alloy parts. Always use a torque wrench to tighten
fasteners to the tightening torque listed.

•= Keep sparks, lighted matches, and open flame away from the top of the battery. If escaping
hydrogen gas is ignited, it will ignite gas trapped in the cells and cause the battery to explode.

•= Be mindful of the environment and ecology. Before you drain the crankcase, find out the proper
way to dispose of the oil. Do not pour oil onto the ground, down a drain, or into a stream, pond, or
lake. Consult local ordinances that govern the disposal of wastes.

•= The air-conditioning (A/C) system is filled with a chemical refrigerant that is hazardous. The A/C
system should be serviced only by trained automotive service technicians using approved
refrigerant recovery/recycling equipment, trained in related safety precautions, and familiar with
regulations governing the discharging and disposal of automotive chemical refrigerants.

•= Before doing any electrical welding on vehicles equipped with anti-lock brakes (ABS), disconnect
the battery negative terminal (ground strap) and the ABS control module connector.

•= Do not expose any part of the A/C system to high temperatures such as open flame. Excessive
heat will increase system pressure and may cause the system to burst.
