1. Introduction
1.1 Preamble
This document is intended to act as a guide for use in the planning of subsea inspections of Origin’s
Kupe Wellhead Platform (WHP), so that all future inspections are carried out in a safe, efficient and
consistent manner.
These guidelines are not intended to over-ride or supersede approved project-specific or contractual
documents, but rather to act as a source of supplementary information on how the Kupe WHP jacket
and subsea appurtenances are to be inspected.
Guidelines regarding subsea inspection of Origin’s Kupe Subsea Raw Gas Pipeline and
Electrohydraulic Control Umbilical are contained in a separate document (NZL-K400-ENG-GDL-
00001).
1.2 Overview
This document has been prepared to provide guidance on inspection and data recording activities for the
Kupe WHP.
This includes:
The inspection of the WHP jacket structure
The inspection of risers, spools and J-tubes
The inspection of all other WHP appurtenances
Data acquisition during WHP inspection
Sufficient information should be collected to allow the WGIM Nexus IC Inspection software baseline
model to be reviewed and corrected as necessary.
Platform Coordinates:
NZ Geodetic Datum 2000 (V20160701): 39° 51' 03.31973" S 174° 97' 11.87056" E
NZ Transverse Mercator Projection: 5588188.680 S 1695808.470 E
1.3.2 Seabed
The near shore seabed from the shoreline to 4km off the coast is covered by boulders up to 1.5m
diameter with some isolated patches of sand.
Beyond this boulder section the seabed is defined as sand/silty sand, with isolated patches of iron sand
and peat.
1.3.3 Rock Berms
In the near-shore area, the pipeline and umbilical are laid on pre-constructed rock berms to elevate them
above the boulder field. A total of 86 rock berms were installed in two groups separated by a 250m sand
lens located between Berms 65 and 66.
1.3.4 Piggyback Clamps
The umbilical is secured to the pipeline with 358 “Trelleborg” Piggyback Clamps in the boulder zone,
where they are both exposed. The Piggyback Clamps were replaced with an improved version during
the 2013 Phase III Project.
1.3.5 Stabilising Mattresses
During installation the pipeline and umbilical were stabilised with concrete “Anchormat” mattresses in
areas where target trenching burial depth was not achieved, over the pipeline on the top of each rock
berm, and over the combined pipeline and umbilical in the “sand lens” area.
Further mattresses were placed over the pipe and umbilical during the 2013 Phase III Project.

ROV Surveys carried out in 2014 and 2015 showed that straps were loose or broken in some locations,
and that some of the 2013 mattresses had moved or become displaced.
1.3.6 Prevailing Weather
The Kupe Field is exposed to long period swells from the Southern Ocean, which occur most of the year,
as well as severe storms in the Tasman Sea.
The prevailing winds are South-easterly to Westerly.
The prevailing current direction is South-East/North-West.
1.3.7 Water Depth and Tidal Range
The water depth is 34.1m LAT at the WHP (KP0.000) and 14.0m LAT at the HDD subsea exit
(KP28.000). The tidal range level data is based on predicted tides relative to MSL. The tidal water level
data for the WHP location is applied to the pipeline route design.
Table 1 below shows tidal ranges for each of the end locations.
1.6 Communications
To ensure a consistent and coherent approach to inspection works throughout the project, all
communications regarding inspection and data collection should be directed through the Inspection
Coordinator.

2.1 Introduction
The Master remains in overall charge of the safety of the vessel and crew at all times.
Weather and operational constraints can have a major effect on access to various worksites.
The CSR and IC, in consultation with the Master, will determine the most effective way to utilise the
vessel to expedite the works. In the event the weather is unsuitable for shallow water Diving, or ROV
operations, the vessel may relocate to a site where operations can continue. Contingency plans should
be prepared and ready to execute if the inspection or remedial work scopes are moved to a different
site.
The project Organogram outlines the chain of command. Various departments are expected to
cooperate in achieving a safe, efficient and cost effective operation, while maintaining a high standard
for data collection.
The following outlines key roles along with a description of their areas of responsibility. Note that,
depending on the Scope of Work, some roles may not be filled.
The Inspection Coordinator has the pivotal role of leading the inspection and ensuring the following
departments form a cohesive team, working together to bring the contract to a successful conclusion.
This will include but not be limited to the following:-
Liaise with the CSR with regard to planning the most effective way of expediting the work scope.
To ensure that all personnel are fully briefed as to the client’s requirements.
To ensure that all online survey and events data is collected in accordance with the procedures.
To keep track of all completed and pending work and be able to advise the CSR of outstanding
tasks in case the vessel should be moved to a different location.
To ensure that all offline survey and events data processing tasks are being carried out in
accordance with the procedures.
To prepare the daily progress report and ensure it is appropriately distributed.
The IC will ensure that time is not lost through duplication, bad planning or poor quality work.
The IC will ensure findings are thoroughly reviewed, along with the associated video clips and grabs, so
that the data to be included in the final report is clear and easily available.
All data required for the final report should be in the possession of the report writer before the end of the
contract and the demobilisation of the vessel and inspection equipment.
2.10 CP Engineer
Origin may require that CP surveys are carried out by a specialist CP sub-contractor.
The CP engineers, who may also be certified CSWIP 3.4U Inspectors, must be familiar with the
requirements of the inspection.
All calibrations are to be done in accordance with the contractors approved procedures.
4.2 Anodes
There are 89 sacrificial anodes fitted to the structure. The location of the anodes (as designed) is shown
in the following drawings in Appendix A.
PR006008-300-DW-3621-0215 (41 face anodes)
PR006008-300-DW-3621-0216 (36 elevation anodes + 12(4 x3) pile sleeve VDM anodes)
Raise a Finding for any deviation for anodes as shown on the drawings.
Anode wastage should be grouped into 25% bands for reporting purposes.
Anode stub attachments are to be inspected for integrity and the anode body where splits and material
loss can occur.
If the wastage of an anode exceeds the anomaly limits, a report must be generated. The Finding
generated will include a video recording of the anode; a frame grab from one end of the anode showing
as much as possible of the anode body; details of the anode location including any metallic debris in
contact with the component; the condition of any visible coating. A contact CP measurement should only
be taken if further degradation or damage will not be caused on the component.
Remaining anode life can be assessed from the Field Gradient (current density CP) measurement, if it is
included with the CP system, and the results recorded in the CP report.
Additional contact readings taken on any anode or component are to be recorded in IC Inspection.
Below is a guide to assist with the anode wastage estimation and to keep the assessment consistent.
4.3 CP Survey
The most recent CP survey of the WHP was carried out by New Plymouth Underwater during the 2016
ROV inspection campaign. Refer to Kupe 2016 ROV Wellhead Platform Jacket Level II Inspection
Report NZ-K400-45-RP-0007. It is recognised that establishing a ground wire to the WHP if it is
unmanned for the purpose of taking proximity CPs might not be possible, therefore the focus is on
contact CP readings.
The two FBE coated DSS spools that connect the WHP riser to the pipeline should be inspected as part
of the WHP survey to Flange 2. Contact CP measurements should be taken on all exposed flanges and
at any damage that has resulted in exposed metal.
There are 79 contact CP locations on the WHP structure, and 1 each on the spool flanges, if accessible.
The CP location list is contained in Appendix B.
There were 79 members In the 2013 Inspection Campaign FMD scope, 68 of which were completed
representing 86% completion. Restricted access members made up the incomplete workscope. For the
detailed Tracerco FMD report from the Summer 2013 Campaign, refer to Appendix A – Tracerco FMD
Report of the Kupe Offshore Campaign As-Built Report NZ-K400-95-RP-0013 Part 2.
FMD was not scheduled in the 2016 ROV platform survey.
The drawings used for the FMD survey are the same as the general inspection. A listing of all the
components giving their diameters and wall thicknesses can be found in Appendix C.
4.5.5 Removal
There may be a requirement to remove marine growth to SA1, where all marine growth is removed
without causing any damage to the coatings. Likely is the removal of marine growth such as mussels to
reduce dynamic loading on the structure, or to allow an inspection to take place.

CDN/ID 3238021: NZL-K400-ENG-GDL-00002
No previous attempt to remove WHP Marine Growth has been made in the splash zone or subsea, thus
it is unknown what the most effective method of MG cleaning might be.
Diver and ROV options include scraping devices, hydraulic rotary wire brush, CaviBlaster, water blaster
The WHP has paint and anti-corrosion coatings to -3m LAT and the riser has a neoprene and HDPE
coating that extends -4.6m below LAT.
Damage to the coatings caused by an aggressive cleaning technique must be avoided. The most
suitable removal technique will be determined at the time.
EXTENT OF 5m DEBRIS
If a flange protector has been installed, a full DVI of the shroud should be carried out. Any leaks,
damage or deformation must be reported to the CSR, or IS immediately for further instructions.
Contact CP measurements will be taken on the riser flange and the riser spool flanges. Depending on
the CP Sub-contractor’s procedures, the contact CP measurement on the riser flange will be used as the
reference for the proximity readings on the riser sections.
Note: The CP values obtained will be on stainless steel.
4.11.3 Spools
Although considered part of the pipeline asset, the two offshore spools will be incorporated in the WHP
inspection, which will include Field Gradient CP (FG-CP) if specified in the SOW. Two passes, with a
single camera, may be used to obtain the maximum coverage of the spools.
There are three anodes on each of the WHP spools, situated either side of the intermediate spool
flange. Anode wastage and bonding cable assessment is required. At the last survey these anodes were
estimated less than 25% depleted.
The riser spool is connected to the riser inboard of the mudmat member and to the intermediate flange
of the pipeline closing spool, which is connected to the pipeline. A DVI is required at all flanges and any
leaks, damage or deformation must be reported to the CSR, or IS immediately for further instructions.
Check for signs of thermal expansion, recording their location and the amount of deflection.
There is a 45° vertical bend 3.5m from the riser flange where the lower side of the vertical bend has
been previously reported as unsupported. If the spool is in suspension, the survey must continue to the
touch down point and a fix taken, especially if it extends on to the pipeline closing spool. In this event the
Finding is to be raised as one Finding attached to the riser spool.
Fixes are to be taken at either end of mattresses as they are encountered. Confirm whether the spools
are supported, unsupported or covered by the mattress.
All unsupported sections greater than 2m need to be logged, raising multiple Findings if necessary. A
minimum of 1m must exist at the end of the span, or it will be referred to as a touchdown and the overall
span will be classed as intermittent.
Should the closing spool and pipeline tie-in flange be unsupported then inspect along the pipeline until
there is a touch down point. A fix should be taken at either end of the span and length and height
recorded.
Refer to Drawing PR006008 - 400 - DW - 3521- 0019 in Appendix A.
