New Kids on the Block

While every Rosarian is familiar with the more popular and recognizable sports like basketball,
volleyball and badminton that has produced a plethora of phenomenal student athletes who have
brought prestige, honor and have left a legacy to Holy Rosary College, there are still some sports which
are less popular and are underrated, who don’t generally get the appreciation that they truly deserve for
bringing pride and glory to this school. Sports like Gymnastics, Track and Field, Swimming, Wushu and
Wrestling are some of the less popular sports in HRC but has produced student athletes who has stood
tall among the giants and has conquered the athletic scene in Santa Rosa.

From the catalog of competitive sports in Holy Rosary College (HRC), swimming has amassed a
lot of competitive tournament wins and has fielded most of their players into the national competitions
due to their rigorous training and their pool of talented and passionate players. Pioneered by Lance and
Gab Macawili in 2013, swimming has evolved into a staple sport in HRC yet it is underappreciated by
most of the Rosarians due to their lack of knowledge on the sport, training facility and exposure to the
public.

According to Anne Michelle Daga, a Grade 7 swimmer, “Hindi masyadong kilala ang swimming
dahil walang coach at swimming pool ang HRC at hindi ito napagtutuunan ng pansin ng school.”

“Mas gusto kong malaman ng mga Rosarians ang kakayahan namin bilang isang swimmers at
mga student athlete ng HRC,” she added.

its way into the local and regional scene. Gymnastics, for one, has made its mark after it has procured a
blue-chip prospect in Xylene Sagayaga, who has bloomed into a “can’t miss athlete”. Track and Field has
also consistently managed to bag multiple tournament triumphs spearheaded by Jan Philip Dictado who
has also made his mark into the local and provincial scene.

This year, Wushu and Wrestling was founded by Emman Pedragosa and Nathaniel Gadbilao
when they were enrolled in HRC this school year. Their quest to raise awareness for the sport have
evolved these into two of the rising sports in HRC due to the increasing number of Rosarians who wants
to learn the sacred mat.

Despite of their growing popularity, these sports are still underappreciated due to its fresh
establishment and the lack of knowledge of the sport from the Rosarians.
According to Maria Isabel Intera, a Grade 11 Wrestler, “Ngayong taon lamang nagkaroon ng
ganitong klaseng laro at marahil hindi pa nila ito alam.”

Nathaniel Gadbilao, a Grade 11 Wushu athlete, had the same sentiment saying, “Hindi pa aware
ang mga Rosarians sa sport na ito at
