Nursing Informatics

Thought Provoking Questions ;

 How can knowledge of computer hardware and software help nurses to participate in
information technology adoption decisions in the practice area?

Answer: Computers enable nurses to quickly access important information about your
health or illness and your treatment plan from your electronic health record. Nurses can
access information such as your laboratory test and x-ray results and health reports from
other health-care team members to give you the best care possible.

 How can new computer software help nurses engaged in professional development
collaboration, and knowledge dissemination activities at their own pace leisure?

Answer: Computer science is the one of the fasted growing disciplines with
multiple innorative inventions that are being made in computer hardware, software and
architecture. There has been development of speed, accuracy and efficiency of the computers
with a reduction in physical size and cost. The new computer software can help nurses in
engaging in professional development, collaboration and dissemination of knowledge.

 How do you acquire information? Choose two hours out of your busy day and try to
take note of all the information that you receive from your environment. Keep a diary
denoting where the information came from and how you knew it was information and
not data.

Answer: Acquiring information by talking and asking to people, the words that they share is part
of their information.

 Reflect on an information system that you are familiar with such as the automatic
banking machine. How does this IS function? What are the advantages in using this
system i.e., in the banking machine example, why not use a bank teller instead? What are
the disadvantages? Are there enhancements that would you add to this system?
Answer: The advantage of it is there will be no hassle. Biggest advantage to online banking are
the high interest rates and low fees. Online only banks don’t pay overhead for physical branches
or the employees to staff then. Instead, they pass those cost savings into customers in the form of
higher interest rates and lower fees. The disadvantage of online banking. Security that their
websites are secure, but no bank website is immune form cyber crime and hacking. Hackers
target bank websites to swipe account information.

 In healthcare, think about the typical day of practice and describe the setting, how many
times does not the nurses interact with Iss? What are the Is that we interact with and
how do we access them? Are they at the bedside handheld or station based? How does
their location and ease of access impact nursing care?

Answer: Typical day of nursing involves constant use of information system. The nurse
receives report from the night or day nurse then goes into the patients chart to see if
anything was missed, to get current lab reports, and to learn more about the patients
,especially if they learned not had this patient on a previous day. They are also looking up
information about certain diagnosis that may not be used often to get a refresher as to
wait that specific diagnosis.

 Since our society is dominated by the need for information and knowledge and
information science focuses on systems as well as individual users fostering user-
centered approaches that enhance society information capabilities by effectively and
efficiently linking people, information and technology. Briefly describe an organization
and discuss how this impacts the configuration and mix of organizations and influences
the nature of work or how knowledge workers interact with and produce information and
knowledge in this setting.

Answer : Knowledge is created through practice, collaboration, interaction and education,

as the different knowledge types are shared and converted. Beyond this, knowledge e
creation is also supported by relevant information and data which can approve decisions
in hospital or any organizations, serve as building blocks in the creation of new
knowledge
 Information systems supports and facilitate the functioning of people to enhance
andevolve nursing practice by generating knowledge. This knowledge represents the five
rights: theright information, accessible by the right people in the right settings, applied
the right way at the right time. It is also the struggle to integrate new knowledge and old
knowledge to enhance wisdom. (cont’d)

 If clinicals are inundated with data without the ability to process it, this yields too little
wisdom. That is why it is crucial that clinicals have viable information systems at their
fingertips to facilitate the acquisition, sharing wisdom; it is the process of empowerment.
If you could only meet 4 of the rights, which one would you omit and why? Also, provide
your rationale for each right
